Can Fran as a nickname work for a boy?

I really love it but keep getting told it’s too feminine

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
TheCurious0range · 07/04/2025 13:14

Tell Fran Healy that

CuriousGeorge80 · 07/04/2025 13:15

Yes for sure. Lead singer of a band - was it Travis? Scottish I think…

jackstini · 07/04/2025 13:18

It’s a common nickname for Francis

It’s a male name in its own right in Italy, Spain, Croatia and others

Lots of men called Fran throughout history - I don’t find it too feminine

Snorlaxo · 07/04/2025 13:19

Sorry but I would assume Fran is a nickname for Francesca

Lovetocook49 · 07/04/2025 13:19

My daughter is Francesca and everyone automatically in her 24 years shorten it to Fran 🤷‍♀️ much to my annoyance.

I know you’re asking for a boy , just letting you know my experience of Fran

AnnaBalfour · 07/04/2025 13:21

It could but there’s many better options

BloodyHellBob · 07/04/2025 13:21

In Ireland Francis is sometimes shortened to Fra which I really like.

saveforthat · 07/04/2025 13:21

No I don't think it works for a boy, having said that anything goes nowadays and it's not that outrageous name suggestion I have come across.

Needspaceforlego · 07/04/2025 13:22

I knew a Francis that became Franny.
But id assume Fran was female.

IHateWasps · 07/04/2025 13:48

It’s very feminine to me and also a dreadful name.

CurlewKate · 07/04/2025 14:11

People call girls James, Michael, Rory…. Why wouldn’t you call a boy Fran? Or Sophie for that matter.

TheJollyMoose · 07/04/2025 14:12

Not if you love your child 😆

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Needmorelego · 07/04/2025 14:13

It's more popular than Frank as a shortening of Francis these days and Fran/Franny has always been fine for boys in Ireland.
It's fine.
I like it.

Because male is a promotion and female is a demotion. Sadly.

OP are you thinking just ‘Fran’ or a short for something?

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 07/04/2025 15:40

Yes, I know one, I love it.

Gretnaglebe · 07/04/2025 15:42

I know a 60 year old Fran (man)

Livelaughlurgy · 07/04/2025 15:46

Would be common in Ireland.

Happyinarcon · 07/04/2025 15:49

I’m another who thinks it’s a girls name

MyKingdomForACat · 07/04/2025 15:55

Can you not just stick a K on the end?

Norastroud · 07/04/2025 16:07

I know a male Fran, short for Francis and a female Fran short for Francesca. I think it’s unisex as both really suit their names.

Norastroud · 07/04/2025 16:07

I love Frankie for both sexes too!

toastofthetown · 07/04/2025 16:28

I think it’s fine, and as a nickname if he doesn’t like it, he can very easily switch to his full name or another nickname he prefers.

TherealmrsT · 07/04/2025 16:40

Worked with a male Fran (Irish if it matters) and had a female Fran friend. Both were fine, same as Chris would be for Christopher/ Christine.

TruthOrNo · 07/04/2025 16:40

Absolutely. I know a male Fran, short for Francis.
