Has it ever been an issue? My partner would like to use a family name from his side if our DC1 is a boy however there is a family member with a similar version of the name.
five year age gap between the children, different surnames, different schools and differently circles
what would you do?

My cousins have the same name never been an issue we use to call them big Gemma and little Gemma not actual names there was about a 10 year gap between them but a girlfriend has also joined the family with the same name and still not a problem and then 2 of my other cousins called there babies the same name and was both born same year but have only met once or twice so again not an issue. I also have 2 aunties with the same name (not sisters)

My cousin was named the male version of my name. I don't think there was ever a conversation about it. They are extremely similar like Olivia and Oliver.

ARichtGoodDram · 05/04/2025 20:43

Using a family name isn't an issue.

DH and 4 of his cousins are all named after their grandfather.

My DD1 and my brothers DD are both named for my Nana but with different diminutives - along the lines of both being Elizabeth but one known as Eliza and the other as Libby.

Tbh I know an Olivia (she goes by Lil) but her partner is Oliver (Ollie) and they’ve named their daughter Olive… so confusing but not

Sayshesheshe · 05/04/2025 20:57

My cousin and I are the equivalent of Molly and Polly and it’s never mattered to us!

bettydavieseyes · 05/04/2025 21:01

2 of my kids have different versions of my name and the youngest has a version of my sisters.my neice has my name as a middle. My cousins have the same boys name. My dad has my grandads name as middle and me, my mum and grandma have the same middle name. My eldest daughter wants to use my late sisters name as a first. Tbh it's a normal thing in my family!

I have the same name as a cousin who is I think about 8 years older than me. By the time I was born she was on the other side of the world so it didn't affect us much! I don't think it ever bothered me - it was a popular name. In fact my very first friend had the same name, and the same colour hair...

I had two uncles called David, and two cousins called David Grin I also had an uncle-by-marriage and a family-friend-uncle who had the same name.

I might be able to win this one. One name - DHs side, his father,( and every generation way back) and brother. His mother's brother and her son ( DHs cousin) too. Now the exact same name as all those - on my side - my Dad, my mum's Dad, my uncle, uncle in law, 2 cousins and my son has it as his second name. And my sister married a man with the name as his second name. And they've given it to their son as his second name. Beat that 🤣

Use it.

EmotionallyWeird · 18/04/2025 18:35

Not in my immediate family, no, but I don't think it would be a problem.

ScentOfAMoomin · 18/04/2025 18:36

Not a problem unless they are siblings

ShanghaiDiva · 18/04/2025 18:38

Quite common in my family - they are differentiated by their location- eg Donald Troon, Donald Australia etc. One generation is all Donalds, another is all Charlies.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/04/2025 18:46

I have a very similar name to my first cousin. She used it first, lol. I think both sets of parents just liked the name. Never been an issue.

LilyJosephine · 18/04/2025 21:14

Several members of my extended family have the exact same name (a few of the dads have named their sons after themselves) and it’s never caused an issue afaik. So I don’t see how a variation on a name plus different surnames, different circles etc in a family could cause a problem.

Tbh if it’s already a “family name” then it sounds like even using the exact same name (rather than a variation) shouldn’t cause any upset.

HugelyExpensiveCrystalDuck · 18/04/2025 21:16

Yes, I’ve got the same name as my cousin, we are the same age. Our mother’s birth chose the same name and both used it. It’s never ever been a problem.

PiggieWig · 18/04/2025 21:58

My SIL has the same name as me, so when she married my brother she became my name. I later married and changed mine but now I’m divorced I kind of want it back!

Its never caused any issues though.
