I'm thinking about naming my daughter Noora (pronounced noo-rah) and I'm trying to find the most unproblematic spelling.

Which of these spellings would cause the least issues with pronunciation so she doesn't get confused with nor-rah?

  1. Noura
  2. Noora
  3. Nura

Many thanks for your help!

No, but like the name and its meaning :)

I think if you are neither Muslim nor of Arabic heritage, if you choose a name from another culture that does not have an established history of being used by other cultures, some people will feel it is cultural appropriation and many others will feel it is somewhat insensitive, inappropriate or ignorant.

If you like the meaning, you have the option of Norah.

I think this is super narrow-minded.

At what point does embracing become appropriation? How would you define the tipping point?

Most of the names most commonly used in the UK originated elsewhere - a lot from the Bible (of Hebrew origin) like Mary, Daniel, Elizabeth, (obviously these are the anglicised versions), or of Greek origin like Catherine, Helen, Thomas etc. Very few names in common use actually originated in the UK. Names, like other ideas, music, food, etc, spread across the world and mix.

I'd say that's a good thing, how on earth is it 'ignorant'?

Where do you draw the line, @Pemba and @Calliopespa ?

For me, long used names that have origins in another culture or language are fine but taking a name from another culture that is not commonly used by people outside that culture is crossing the line, especially if it has religious or spiritual associations. For me, Norah is okay, Noura, Aaliyah, Mohamed, no.

ٱلْنُورُ (the light) is one of the 99 names of Allah. Calling a child Noor or Noura if you aren’t Muslim just because you think it sounds prettier than Norah is 🙄 to me.

Do you feel the same about people using the name Layla/Laila/Leila for example, which is also of arabic origin meaning night or dark beauty.

This name is used amongst people not affiliated to one specific religion.

I know a Noula pronounced Noola, so I instinctively think the name you want should be spelt Noura. But I think however you spell it some people are going to get it wrong.

KnickerFolder · 05/04/2025 22:22

Leila is a secular name that has long been used by people of different cultures/religions so it’s fine IMO.

Thanks for all the votes on spelling! I have lots to think about.
