Which spelling works best for this name?

I'm thinking about naming my daughter Noora (pronounced noo-rah) and I'm trying to find the most unproblematic spelling.

Which of these spellings would cause the least issues with pronunciation so she doesn't get confused with nor-rah?

1. Noura
2. Noora
3. Nura

Why would anyone laugh at all? It's well known, there are several variants of an Arabic/ Urdu name. I don't know all the increments of pronunciation but it's certainly very traditional and nothing that will be laughed at.

Technically, Norah, Nura, Noora, Noura are all the same name. Norah is just the anglicised form.

I’m very surprised that so few PPs have heard of such a common (in the UK) Arabic name 🤷‍♀️

I think however you spell it, it will get often get pronounced the same way Norah in the UK by non Arabic speakers even if people know it should be pronounced differently because the beautiful soft long vowel sound doesn’t come naturally to English speakers or it will get mangled into something half way between.

I am really struggling with all of these negative comments in here, frankly I think it’s disgusting. It’s a beautiful name and it was a simple question. I think Noura looks lovely and I really hope none of these comments put this wonderful mummy off her little one’s name.

I don't think Norah is related to Noora. Nora(h) is Irish, from Honora (Latin) - no link to Arabic.

Yeah, I'm surprised at the negativity on this thread. I actually hadn't heard of Noora, only Noor, but I encounter new names all the time at my kids' school. Kids just accept other kids' names as completely normal. It's not even as if there's anything especially tease-worthy about Noora, it doesn't rhyme with a rude word or anything like that.

I often comment (under various names) on threads about Muslim names, and they definitely have a different tone to threads about English or European names. It makes me really sad.

Nuur is the Arabic word for light.

Nora could be short for Honora, Eleanora etc.

It doesn’t rhyme with zoo. I can’t quite describe it though 😂 It’s like Queen Noor, as a PP suggested, but with an “a” at the end.

@KnickerFolder ,I know several Noors. They say it as Noor. Noo with a r on the end.

Noor is also light in Arabic, so I would guess the two are linked, as the languages are related. But I think the Irish derivation is separate and coincidental.

All the Nouras I know spell it that way and get the correct pronunciation.

Thank you for saying that, @PlanetOtter . I feel the same. It's a beautiful name with a lovely meaning, and not uncommon in the UK. Most children will probably come across this name at some point in their schooling. (Unless they are very isolated).
Some of these comments make me sad,too.

Not heard of it before, it has a nice sound. DD was at school with a Noor, perhaps this is a variation of that? I think the Noora spelling would make it the most clear that the pronunciation is different from Nora/Norah (which is more well known in the UK, and yes, it has had a comeback in recent years.)

So I voted Noora, as I think Noura and Nura could be read ambiguously.

They probably are the ones who post that only children called 'royal' or 'classic' names could possibly be high court judges, prime ministers or headteachers.

I would do Nurah with a H on the end. Looks beautiful and I definitely don't think "Nora" when I look at it x

I think it's a beautiful name with a lovely meaning. I actually prefer it to Nora/Norah (I still think of Nora Batty, showing my age there, but of course there is Norah Jones the singer, and Nora in Ibsen's play ''A Doll's House".)

I prefer the sound of Noora/Noura though.

Anyway, from the visual look of the name written down, I like Noura. Nura or Noora both give the pronunciation OP wants, but they don't look quite as nice to my eyes. It's a pretty-sounding name, though.

@HeCharters Ah ok. Then Noora does work best but I think people may misread it as Nora. Perhaps spelling it Noorah would help , to distinguish it more from Nora

I guess it depends on your accent on how you pronounce zoo 🤷‍♀️ Although Noor/Noura are Arabic names used by Muslims from many different countries so there are probably slight differences in pronunciation too. I would assume OP knows how to pronounce it though as she is asking how to avoid the clunky anglicised form 😂

I don’t pronounce نور with an oo to rhyme with zoo but I can’t quite explain it either. I don’t think there is an exact transliteration.

TBH, half of the UK with non rhotic accents is probably going to mangle and mispronounce the R sound too, or drop it entirely in the case of Noor.

It’s a beautiful classic name OP. Ignore the ignorant posters. It doesn’t sound quite as pretty in an English accent though.

I wouldn’t. The ending -ah on a name often indicates that a name has Hebrew origins, eg Sarah, Hannah, because there is a special feminine ending with a silent letter H. OP has said she doesn’t want the anglicised Hebrew form, Norah. It would be inappropriate to “Hebrewise” an Arabic name for English speakers.

Actually, Arabic also has a special form of the letter T that is feminine ending, which is only pronounced when there is an elision. Although Noura/Nura/Noorah doesn’t have that special letter at the end.
