Which spelling works best for this name?

I'm thinking about naming my daughter Noora (pronounced noo-rah) and I'm trying to find the most unproblematic spelling.

Which of these spellings would cause the least issues with pronunciation so she doesn't get confused with nor-rah?

  1. Noura
  2. Noora
  3. Nura

Many thanks for your help!

Noora is lovely, Nura is a bit Nurofen in my view.

Nura
With no Os, it's less likely to be confused for a variant of Norah.

SirChenjins · 04/04/2025 08:31

I'd go with Noora as it's clearer. Nura could be pronounced Nuh-ra and Noura could be Nowra.

PinkStarsandBlackWalls · 04/04/2025 08:31

Phonetically you need Noora. Initially people might assume Nora but Noora is very clearly n/oo/r/a.

  1. n/ou/r/a - ou like it shout
3 n/ure/a - ure like in pure
MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 04/04/2025 08:34

I know a Nura. And Nuria. The latter is Spanish. The former was a colleague from a long time ago and I am not sure of her background.

TappyGilmore · 04/04/2025 08:34

Nura is the only one of the three that I would pronounce as Noo-ra.

The others would definitely be Nora/Norah.

Springtimefordaffs · 04/04/2025 08:38

Nura is a prefix in the name of some some medicines.
It is a risk she will get called names.

Same here - I’m not entirely sure why, but I’d say “Nora” for the spellings Noora and Noura. I think because I’m more familiar with the name and pronunciation of Nora, and I’m seeing Noor to rhyme with Door. Obv there are loads of other examples of “oor” being pronounced how you want it, I’m just saying what my first guess would have been.

DoreenGrey · 04/04/2025 08:40

In a similar vein, I think Noor is a very sweet name.

suah · 04/04/2025 08:46

Of those I think Noura. Noora is most likely to get mixed up with Nora and Nura I would pronounce with a shorter u.

I actually prefer Noor with no a though!

Doitrightnow · 04/04/2025 08:47

I'd pronounce Noura on first attempt as Nora as I'd expect the Nour to rhyme with pour.

I'd be unsure how to pronounce Nura but I wouldn't assume it had an oo sound it it. I'd most likely guess the first syllable rhymed with pure.

So I voted Noora, which I did pronounce first time as Noo-ra. But even then the Noor could rhyme with poor. Does the name Noor rhyme with poor? I've never heard it spoken.

Whichever you pick, you'd only have to tell people once the correct pronunciation. Most people will learn the name by hearing it rather than seeing it.

LifeD1lemma · 04/04/2025 08:50

The one I know (in her 40s, American, Indian heritage) is Nura and the pronunciation seemed obvious to me. I think the others might be mistaken for Nora if you weren’t looking carefully.

user1492757084 · 04/04/2025 13:07

All are open to being pronounced NOT as you intend.

Do you like Noor - As in Queen Noor of Jordan?
If you choose a name that is already known or is the same as a well known person, it is likely to be said the correct way.

itsallabitofamystery · 04/04/2025 13:08

It’s Nora. No playing around with it.

TheQuietestSpace · 04/04/2025 13:25

This post is proof that people don't read! You are not asking about the name NORA

I would go Noora.

Ecocool · 04/04/2025 13:27

Needspaceforlego · 04/04/2025 07:40

Nora.

But I'd be wary because my first thought are Nora virus. Not sure of spelling but that's what it reminds me of.

That's a completely different name.

Ecocool · 04/04/2025 13:28

Noora.

RightThenFred · 04/04/2025 13:31

I don't think there's a perfect solution, so I'd say just choose your favourite. A lot of people pronounce "oor" words the same as "or", e.g. "moor" and "more" sound the same for a lot of people. So, the difference between Noora and Nora isn't going to be that clear-cut regardless. Personally, I prefer Noora, because it's like Queen Noor and I'm familiar with that name.

isthesolution · 04/04/2025 13:31

Noora/Noorah is probably less likely to be pronounced wrongly.

Noura looks like it could be Now-rah
Nura looks like it could be New-rah

Mischance · 04/04/2025 13:39

Whatever you do, people will call her Norah - just be prepared for that.

Topseyt123 · 04/04/2025 13:44

I think it is a nice name but all of those spellings could well prove problematic. You and your child (as they grow up) are likely to have to explain them regularly.

MoreChocPls · 04/04/2025 13:46

Sorry, but it’s awful and you’re gonna give your kid a bad start in school life as all the kids will either call her by the wrong name or take the mickey.

HeCharters · 04/04/2025 13:48

@MoreChocPls , it's quite a normal Arabic/Urdu name.
The kids won't be as ignorant as you think.

BobbyBiscuits · 04/04/2025 13:50

So not just Nora? You want it pronounced 'new-ra'?
I guess Naura, to sound like Laura?
