Which names go best with my surname?

Hello , we are expecting our first baby in May , and we are so indecisive over names , our surname is Green which has excluded the one name we both liked best - Gwendolyn as Gwen Green looks ridiculous 🥲
Our top contenders otherwise for a girl are :

Anastasia June ( Annie )
Cordelia Jane
Edlyn Nicole ( Edie)
Francesca Ann (Frankie)

Boys -

Jude James
Oliver ( But does this just sound like olive green?)
Noah Jude
Arlo James

Which ones from this list would you say are best and any suggestions ?

Francesca Ann and Arlo James are my favourites.

Suggestions:

Lucille Kate
Millicent Hannah
Zara Rosemary

Lucas Mathew
Richard Ewan
Fraser Benjamin

EmberAsh · 22/03/2025 03:23

Francesca and Noah are my favourites but they're all nice.

GoodVibesHere · 22/03/2025 03:23

Francesca is lovely

Annie Green is a bit too much like Anne of Green Gables but that might just be me!

Thereisntenoughgin · 22/03/2025 03:25

I like Francesca too. And Noah.

The first name that came into my mind when I read your surname was Agatha!

falalalalaaaaaaaa · 22/03/2025 03:27

I absolutely love Annie Green, and Oliver Green - my head didn’t go to Olive Green until you said it. Noah is fab too though! Congratulations!

Pillarsofsalt · 22/03/2025 03:34

I think Gwendoline Green is fine 🤷‍♀️

Marchingintoapril · 22/03/2025 05:36

I like Francesca and Arlo from your list.

I also love Theodora as a suggestion. This was always on my list, but I didn't like any of the shortenings, apart from Thora.

BoleynMemories13 · 22/03/2025 07:38

Jude and Noah are lovely and go well. I really dislike Arlo (just sounds like someone being really lazy pronouncing Harlow). Oliver is very classic but I would probably avoid with your surname, for the reason you point out.

Your girl list is less to my personal taste, but I prefer Francesca to your other choices and it goes fine with your surname. I agree about the Anne of Green Gables comments. Edie is sweet but Edlyn is awful.

YouWouldntKnowWhatIMean · 22/03/2025 08:01

I love the name Edlyn! I recently started teaching a couple of girls with this name, and it's lovely. Edie is a lovely shortening too.

For a boy, I like Jude and Noah. Possibly Noah just wins over Jude (I know it's silly but I always think Jude doesn't sound complete! It is a nice name though!).

Moreteaandchocolate · 22/03/2025 08:26

Girls
I love Edie - but not keen on Edlyn (is it said Eed-lyn or Edd-lyn? Either way it will get misheard as Evelyn). Edie on its own or as short for Edith is nice.

I also like Francesca / Frankie a lot.

Annie Green makes me think of Anne of Green Gables.

Cordelia is a bit “much” for my taste.

Ideas:

Genevieve (Genny / Genie / Neve / Evie)
Penelope (Penny / Nell)
Juniper (June / Juni)
Adeline (Addy / Della)
Lorelei (Lori)
Rhiannon (Rhi)
Elodie
Rosalie (Rosie)
Imogen
Dorelia (Dory / Dora)
Leonie
Harriet (Hattie)
Helena (Nellie / Lainey)

Boys

All are great but Oliver and Noah are sooo popular round me. Arlo and Jude are very trendy, if that matters to you?

Ethan
Sebastian
Leon
Jonah
Finley
Jasper
Nathan
Rory
Milo
Isaac
Toby
Louis
Oscar

maw1681 · 22/03/2025 08:32

I would avoid Oliver Green but all the others go

Sal17690 · 22/03/2025 08:52

Lots of nice choices. I adore Frankie for a girl. But are you aware of the water bottle brand Frank Green? It's not a problem but just in case you hadn't considered it.

lilylooleelala · 22/03/2025 11:14

Gwendolyn Green/ Gwen Green is an absolutely beautiful name! So memorable. GG initials. It’s perfect!

sel2223 · 22/03/2025 11:43

Keep an eye on initials

Francesca Ann Green may sound lovely but 'FAG', not so much

HugoYorway · 22/03/2025 12:16

Anastasia ( Annie ) - Like Annie.
Cordelia - a bit long
Edlyn ( Edie) - awful
Francesca (Frankie) - not keen

Jude - not keen
Oliver - like
Noah - overused
Arlo - don't like it. Harlow Green

Middle names:
James, Ann and Jane are filler middle names
June a bit silly for a May baby.
Nicole - don't like it

shoopshoopdedoo · 22/03/2025 12:26

I love Gwen Green, actually!

I like Annie and Edie but not so keen on Anastasia and dislike Edlyn. Francesca is OK. Cordelia is a bit much for my taste.

Of your boys names, I love Oliver but I don’t think it’s usable with your surname. I like Noah, too. Dislike Arlo and Jude - too trendy!

sel2223 · 22/03/2025 12:28

Gwendolyn Green makes me think of Germaine Greer - not a fan of the double GG.

I'd also rule out Oliver Green for the reasons you mentioned.

My favourites from your list are Cordelia Jane and Noah Jude (although I actually think a longer 3 syllable first name sounds best with your surname)

BootballJoy · 22/03/2025 14:59

I would vote Gwendoline Green or Francesca Jane/June Green

Not a massive fan of the boys' options, would probably go Arlo Jude

AudiobookListener · 22/03/2025 15:29

Gwendolyn Green is nice, although that won't help you if its a boy. All your suggestions are fine, except Oliver and Annie, for the reasons PPs have already given.

LilyJosephine · 23/03/2025 00:48

I like alliteration so think Gwendolyn Green is nice - really lyrical and memorable. Yes, Gwen Green is a bit superhero but so what? I actually quite like that too! 🤣 My own DC has a similar style alliterative name though - 3 syllable first name and 1 syllable surname (including the alliterative short, punchy 1 syllable “superhero” style nickname), so I may be biased.

I don’t dislike any of your girls choices though - apart from Edlyn which looks invented and will have a lifetime of people saying “Ev- lyn?” imo.

However really less keen on your boys choices as they are all much too trendy/likely to date for me - apart from Oliver which is possibly a bit much with Green. James as a first name would be nicer.

Or split the difference in sound between Oliver and Arlo and consider Arthur? It has rapidly risen but at least has a slightly more classic feel. Or Owen maybe? Or even popular Leo I think feels a bit less likely to date. Of course with my love for alliteration I’d be really tempted by something like Gabriel personally.

My favourites,i nspirred from your list..

Edlyn Nicole Green
Cosima Jane Green
Nicola Frances Green
Edwina Mary Green

Arlo James Green
Elio James Green
Nicholas James Green
James Francis Green

Heavenlyhoumous · 23/03/2025 16:23

I love Cordelia, nn Dilly, so would go for that. I think Anastasia is a bit dated. Love Jude and Arlo.

You might want to rethink the initials Francesca Anne Green would spell 😬

Cordelia Jane is my favourite, close second Anastasia June. Not a fan at all of Edlyn sorry though Edie and Edith are cute.

I think Oliver Green does sound too reminiscent of Olive.

Noah Jude would be my pick.

Theresa - obviously!
