Cosmo? Connotations?

DH are due our second child in June, we don’t know the sex yet. For a boy we both like the name Cosmo. He’s worried it might be a ‘council estate’ name, particularly in Scotland (he is Scottish but has been away 20 years). Does anyone have any more up to date knowledge?
Thanks.

For me, it’s a mixture of a magician name and a smooth talking Italian man name. Also quite 1980’s. It feels very “fancy”.

I should say I know nobody called cosmo and I’m sure if I did I’d have much more sensible associations!

Juiceinacup · 19/03/2025 23:37

I live in Scotland I would think of the Cosmo all you can eat buffet restaurant chain we have one in our city.

17to35 · 19/03/2025 23:37

I always thought it was ultra posh

JBJ · 19/03/2025 23:39

I’d assume he was named after the buffet restaurant chain!

Walkingdeb · 19/03/2025 23:40

Sorry, but Cosmo Smallpiece, a revolting Les Dawson character. I am old though.

WarmthAndDepth · 19/03/2025 23:41

Gorgeous. Timeless and international; a child of the universe. It was on my list of boys' names.

LauderSyme · 19/03/2025 23:42

I'd say it's the opposite of what your DH is worried about. It's quite posh, or at least solidly middle class.

LauderSyme · 19/03/2025 23:43

I like it a lot.

suah · 19/03/2025 23:43

I think Fairly odd parents (cartoon) and the magazine
not particularly council estate nor posh to me. I used to work with one who was an average/normal person.

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 20/03/2025 00:03

I've recently met an 18 year old very posh Cosmo, who was incredibly charming and articulate. I don't think everyone can pull a name like that.

Darkclothes · 20/03/2025 00:08

I would think its a boys, Greek name.
Potentially a shortened version of Cosmos?

Needspaceforlego · 20/03/2025 01:04

Cosmo = nickname for Cosmopolitan womans magazine little bit more risky, than Marie Claire 😬

Not sure if it's still on the market but I don't think I'd use the name. Cosmopolitan could easily become a pub chain

Same here.

coxesorangepippin · 20/03/2025 01:09

Cosmo Kramer from seinfield

MittensForKittens123 · 20/03/2025 05:23

Oh dear - I’d never heard of the buffet chain.

Older brother is Lachlann (nn Lucky) - really struggling to find other names we like as much.

There’s a horrible character in Jilly Cooper books called Cosmo so it just reminds me of him!

ThatOwl · 20/03/2025 05:35

I think of established mega posh. Though I wonder if getting more use by us normal people now with the trend of older fashioned names

Yep, I’ve can’t think of this name without picturing Kramer

DoorToNowhere · 20/03/2025 06:08

It's not posh in the slightest to me, I think your dh's concerns are very valid, it's along the lines of Kai etc. Reminds me of the magazine too.

ThatBluntZebra · 20/03/2025 06:11

The only Cosmos I know are dogs.

Sofiewoo · 20/03/2025 06:11

I can only think of the trashy magazine when I hear Cosmo.

SquashedSquid · 20/03/2025 06:11

I've never come across a council estate kid called Cosmo. I'd say it's quite the opposite.

BlondiePortz · 20/03/2025 06:14

Magazine and a cocktail to me

Roselilly36 · 20/03/2025 06:42

just makes me think of the restaurants, not that I have ever been to one, but there is one in my city.
