Hello…we are expecting a baby boy and we are very torn between Lucas or Archie? We really like them both but just can’t decide!

I teach an Archie (undergraduate level) and while he’s a lovely lad it seems like a “little boy” name, and feels odd on a 6ft 20-year-old.

I also met an Archie dog the other day and he was adorable!!

Holymoly64 · 16/03/2025 23:11

We have a Lucas in our family. I thought it would be shortened to Luc (love that spelling) but it’s actually been shortened to Cas.

wizzler · 16/03/2025 23:16

Love Archie

DramaAlpaca · 16/03/2025 23:46

Lucas is lovely.

Thanks. We don’t really mind shortened names on the bc so ok with Archie in that respect. My concern with it is whether it’s more of a name for a little boy rather than an adult. With Lucas my DH is worried it would get shortened to Luke which he doesn’t like (but I don’t think that it would).

I know two people called Lucas. When their names are shortened it is to Lou or Louie.

Archie is a shortened version of Archibald or Archer, but plenty of people name their children the shortened versions of a name. Archie, Jessie(Jesse), Harry, Sally. So I wouldn’t let that reason stop you.

Both names are good.

I’m not so keen on Lucas but love Luke and Luka. My grandad was a Luka so it scans much better for me than Luca.

Timeforanotheraliasnow · 17/03/2025 00:50

Lucas

Bluelavenders · 17/03/2025 06:47

If you’re not keen on Luke as a short form of Lucas then I’d avoid it. The Lucas I know gets called Luc (Luke) by his mates

FondantFancyFan · 17/03/2025 06:49

Lucas has more gravitas for a boy later in life, Archie sounds childish. I also like the name Xavier, it's another name that will carry a child through all stages of his life.

Thanks for the help. I think we are leaning towards Lucas although the mucus comment is a bit worrying 😅. Has anyone with a Lucas had this? Although probably all names you could rhyme with something so probably not a great reason to go against a name

The one I know occasionally gets “Luke” or (when very young) “Lukey” but never anything like that!

we have a Lucas, we/he likes his name, never gets shortened by anyone else - I sometimes call him luke or cas x

HereintheloveofChristIstand · 17/03/2025 09:11

Lucas
Archie sounds like a golden retriever and not a man who can be taken seriously

I'd avoid Archie, Theo, Freddie and Jack just because there are so many of them. I'm a childminder and I think everyone in our childminders group looks after at least one if not two Archies, Theos and Freddies - Jack was more popular a few years ago.

Lucas, Felix and Jude are my favourites.

PurpleChrayn · 17/03/2025 09:26

Lucas sounds like mucus. Archie is ok but not great.

user1492757084 · 17/03/2025 10:12

I love Archibald. I know an older gentleman called Arch who is gorgeous and his name is Archibald.
I'm an art lover so The Archibald Prize for portraits comes to mind.

From your list I also like
Max
Felix
Luke
John - Jack

Nice list - Max is my personal favourite 😊

SorcererGaheris · 17/03/2025 16:44

Lucas is one of my favourite names, so a vote for Lucas from me.

KayEmAy · 18/03/2025 19:05

Archie :) But you can't choose wrong

Lalaloul · 19/03/2025 18:37

I really like Archie ❤️ I think it can suit all ages.
my husband loved Lucas but I’m not a fan, just not really my taste but luckily we’re having a girl

I would say go with what YOU love. Who cares what anyone else thinks x

anon1411 · 20/03/2025 20:03

My boy is called Archie.

Currently pregnant with my second and we have Luca as an option if it's a boy! ☺️

Amyjade2022 · 21/03/2025 11:53

Ooh this is so hard I can see why you’re having difficulty deciding I like both however. I would say I slightly prefer Archie however if Luca was an option it would definitely win for me personally

Ceh512 · 21/03/2025 12:09

Do people still tend to think of Luca as having Italian heritage?

peachescariad · 21/03/2025 12:19

Work in a secondary school and Archie is very popular - all 11 of them are Archie not Archibald. Most are known as Arch to their mates which I really like.
We have a few Lucas's and some are called Luc.
