What age range are you?

Hi!

I was just wondering what the average age of the posters are on MN baby name forum. I’m curious because I see a lot of “Susan, Jenny, David, John” name suggestions that feel very 70s to me.

I am just curious how many of us are in our 20s-30s because I feel like I’m one of the few!

I think of those names as being from the 50s. I know a fair few Sues in their late 60s.

MinPinSins · 14/03/2025 16:20

I'm in my 30s.

I don't know the general age range, but I think you're barking up the wrong tree with this. I'm pretty sure everyone suggesting these names is aware they are 70s. They are suggesting them as alternatives to Jude, Margot and whatever else is trendy.

I’m not trying to be nasty or anything! I just think a lot of the names I see suggested are often out dated now so I was wondering if it’s to do with an older demographic of posters here on MN.

I am not saying it in an offensive manor at all! All names are cyclical and come back in style!

Right? I’ve seen Mark and David suggested recently, it’s too soon for a comeback they’re all middle aged imo.

Duckyfondant · 14/03/2025 16:27

I've thought this before too. There are some very old fashioned answers, and not the 'cool again' type

Fagli · 14/03/2025 16:29

I think it also depends on demographics as well as age. I’m still in babymaking range and I know a few people who have chosen more traditional names, along with some more unusual ones all at the same nursery. A friend who lives in a more rural part of the UK says the traditional names are still very popular.

I’ve not seen anyone on here wax lyrical about Susan or Jenny though, they’re definitely names of quite a few decades ago!!

KnickerFolder · 14/03/2025 16:38

People don’t call their children the names that were popular for their own generation because they seem dull and dated. Don’t assume people who were born in the 70s are the people suggesting 70s names 🙄

Realistically, the next wave of trendy retro names will be 60s/70s so if you want to be ahead of the game…

BootballJoy · 14/03/2025 18:40

I think of those names as being 1950s really, not actually seen them suggested much? I don't know if it's an age thing or a demographic thing - although it does seem from some comments the posters aren't aware of current naming trends/aren't spending a lot of time in playgroups/have much older children etc.

The names that get the most love seem to be conservative choices like Alexander, James, Benjamin, Charlotte, Alice etc.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 14/03/2025 19:03

@AubernFable They've not really gone away. Mark has probably been split with Marcus. David or Dawid is popular where I am.

Where I work now only has one Mark. he's 40ish.

They're just not super-popular.

Susan and Jenny sound fine to me, but many of the current names sound samey.

All the Susans, Johns, Jennys, and Davids I know were born between 1960 and 1968. Not 1970s names, or 1950s.

I haven't seen any of those names suggested on here.

MaybeItWasMe · 14/03/2025 19:14

I haven’t seen any of those names recommended on here and my child has one of them! I would say that names I regard as ‘classic’ (Kings/Queens, Bible names, Celtic etc) are outnumbered by surnames-as-first-names (Mason etc), names with unique spellings etc.

Denimshirt · 14/03/2025 19:22

I don’t see those names recommended at all.

thatmistylight · 14/03/2025 19:24

I’m in my 20’s and love not trendy old fashioned names.

SemperIdem · 14/03/2025 19:26

Have to say I’ve not seen those names being suggested.

You are more likely to see outside the top 50 but not ultra out there names, suggested here though.

Ladamesansmerci · 14/03/2025 19:30

I'm 31. My 80yo dad is a Dave, so it will never not be an old man name for me 🤣

I don't like most of the old names that have made a comeback, though I like timeless old names like Charlotte, Elizabeth, etc, that could be the name of anyone regardless of age.

carrotsandtomatoes · 14/03/2025 20:01

I’ve never seen Susan Jenny or David being suggested

I'm on here a lot.
I've seen David suggested - but that isn't of an era, or generation - there have been Davids across all ages.

I've never seen Susan or Jenny suggested.

MummyToBe2001 · 14/03/2025 20:31

I’m on here a lot too and I have

maybe I’m on here more? I read every thread

I've been here for 20 years and not once have I seen those names suggested for a new baby. Are you sure?

Notimeforaname · 14/03/2025 20:36

I'm in my 30s.

My son is Robert. I thought is was a common name that crossed generations. Apparently not. It wasn’t even in the top 100 in 2023 when he was born.
