My DH keeps shooting down all my name suggestions, are they really that bad?

We may be expecting a child soon, so we have been stewing upon possible names. My recommendations have been Campbell if it's a girl (Not exactly as tribute to our insignificantly small Scottish heritage, more-so because I just really like the sound of it!) and Renn if it's a boy. Are these bad? I've thrown around the idea of Casimir, or Cassidy, but none of them seem to stick with him, is this a me issue?

As someone who hasn't even got an unusual name but has spent their lifetime correcting the spelling or pronunciation please think of your hypothetical child and just choose a name that people know and can spell.

Forget Cassidy, unless you want kids at school to call her Butch.

Or David……..

Motheringlikeapelican · 12/03/2025 08:55

Never trust a Campbell....

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/03/2025 08:57

Baxter or Tunnock for a boy?

MissDoubleU · 12/03/2025 09:02

Tooearlytothink · 12/03/2025 08:50

Ceilidh is a dance not a girls name 🫣 agree with the rest though

No, it’s also a Gaelic feminine name meaning “visiting”

I am Scottish and have had many, many friends called Ceilidh in all my years growing up and living in Scotland, hence why I suggested it. ‘S e do bheatha 🤗

Course you did. it's probably a Scottish spelling of Kayleigh.

What about Eilidh? Pronounced Ay-lee

It's a Scottish name and sounds lovely when said aloud.

The only downside is spelling it outside of Scotland but it's not a completely unknown name

I'm not a huge fan of your suggestions tbh

Ren - like the Welsh rapper? 🤔

Wren is a beautiful name. Campbell is a last name, and not very nice for a girl at all. There are so many beautiful Scottish names for girls. Skye, Iona, Isla, Heather, Eilidh, Ceilidh, Bonnie.. why would you go with Campbell of all things!

Jesus. It's also a very common first name in Scotland.

GoldDuster · 12/03/2025 09:12

Campbells soup, Renn and Stimpy, Magnolia is a boring paint colour you use for slapping all over a rental. Aspen is okay but the first syllable is ass, so good luck with that when they get to school.

If my dream job at the moment would be a bed tester, I wouldn't name a child Silentnight. If you're looking for a name that lasts them throughout their life, that they won't hate you for, that they won't have to spell out every time they say it, or explain what it means or why they've been given it as a name.. It's after Rennsport. No, he's not a racing driver.. not German, no, err, I don't really know what they were thinking, no. It's not a competition.

If you're looking for something classical, then your husband likes Elizabeth and Oliver. Stop there.

Ha! What? The Gaelic language is actually… quite old, love. Ceilidhs have been around a very long time as has its use as a feminine name, realistically making “Kayleigh” a likely steal from the celts.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 12/03/2025 09:19

Never met anyone called Ceilidh 🤨

Never met anyone called Ceilidh 🤨

But I have. One of my closest friends as a teen was name Ceilidh. It’s not the most popular, but still a Scottish name that is used. Hence why I suggested it.

Type it into instagram and see how many women with this name pop up. I just did. They exist.

HugoYorway · 12/03/2025 09:26

@MissDoubleU , is it really? You amaze me! Your use of ',love' is patronising.

i bet none were born pre-1985.

Not that I care anyway, it's not great however you spell it.
User-submitted name Cèilidh - Behind the Name

MissDoubleU · 12/03/2025 09:27

Absolutely mad. I’ve never personally met anyone named Morven or Paisley, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist as a name.

I do know some Wrens. A plethora of Eilidh’s as well as the few Ceilidhs. Bonnie is my favourite, and would have been my choice had I had a girl. But I don’t know any human with it as a given first name, save Bonnie Tyler of course.

Horses7 · 12/03/2025 09:27

Sorry OP - please think again.

Tooearlytothink · 12/03/2025 09:27

@MissDoubleU Also Scottish & lived here
my whole life & never encountered a single 'Ceilidh'. Looking at registers for scotland baby names there's been very few named that in the last 50 years (max 7 in any given year across all of Scotland) so you must be incredibly lucky to have encountered so so many of them 🙄🤣

Grammarnut · 12/03/2025 09:28

I wouldn't use any, except possibly Casimir for a boy - but spelling issue for life! Your DH is right, they aren't very nice - and why the Campbells for Scottish heritage, have you never heard of Glencoe? Anyway, it's a soup brand.

tallhotpinkflamingo · 12/03/2025 09:29

Renn is cute as a middle name, not as a first.

All the other suggestions are hideous, especially Campbell and Magnolia.

Do you have a hoarding problem, or are you looking around your house for inspiration and coming across tins of soup and cans of paint?

ICanTellYouMissMe · 12/03/2025 09:30

Wow @MissDoubleU isn't it funny, some names must be very regional!

Probably one family with generations of Ceilidhs 🤣
