My DH keeps shooting down all my name suggestions, are they really that bad?

We may be expecting a child soon, so we have been stewing upon possible names. My recommendations have been Campbell if it's a girl (Not exactly as tribute to our insignificantly small Scottish heritage, more-so because I just really like the sound of it!) and Renn if it's a boy. Are these bad? I've thrown around the idea of Casimir, or Cassidy, but none of them seem to stick with him, is this a me issue?

I'm not snotty, but you are expecting people to not have heard of films that people may well be familiar with, or at least be aware of them.

In the over-40's, no. Jezus... this has really gotten under your skin. 🤦‍♀️

Again, it's the reference and implication that negative connotations/unwanted nicknames would result. But, I guess someone might call a child named Cassidy, Butch, for a laugh. It would probably be the drunk 70 year old uncle that the family "tolerates" at Christmas, though.

I've never seen Frozen but I know when to let it go.

Good one. 👍

Edited

I'm 38 and absolutely heard of and watched Butch cassidy and the sundance kid. And yes, I probably would associate Cassidy with butch, but not enough to be negative about it as I'm not a schoolchild!
Tbf though- my mum had a bit of a thing for Paul Newman so I might be an outlier!

Well, my DH actually liked Renn a lot, I originally suggested it as sort of an homage to him getting his dream job (Being a part of a German race team, they call Motorsport "Rennsport" over there)

Renn also means run! In German. Awful suggestion and the connection to your husband’s job is so naff. What next? Formula One? Race?

all your suggestions are awful. Cassidy is maybe the best of the bad.

He was very good looking! Google his pic from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof! 😻

Maybe Brick should be suggested? 😁

Campbell for a girl is very American-preppy.

I like Casimir and Cassidy.
MN can be extremely conservative and scornful about names that are even a little different. I don't love Campbell or Renn personally though.

@Nothinglikeagoodbook you know some people actually are American, even outside America 😯 and Casimir is used a lot in some ethnicities and you sound quite ignorant.

You just sound rude. The OP posted to ask people their opinions of the names so I told her my opinion, I thought that was the point…

Casimir is used a lot by Poles and Russians and Cassidy is used by Americans, but as I assume the OP isn’t Polish, Russian or American (or she would probably have mentioned it) I don’t understand your point.

Bonbon249 · 12/03/2025 23:45

Another Scottish person here, please do not call your daughter Campbell, it's acceptable for a boy, but they're likely to be nicknamed Soupie or Tinnie (think someone Scottish saying tin of, so tinnie soup!). I don't think you'd want that for your child.

I’m with your husband.

You need to buy a name book and each of you go through with a different coloured highlighter and highlight the names you like, then discuss the ones with a double highlight.

You can do this for free on baby name sites.

Wren is fine but spell it right.
Don't name her after soup

The Polish name is Kazimierz and the Russian name is Kazimir.

There are plenty of beautiful names of Scottish origin. I’m with your OH and I don’t mind saying so. All of those names are awful, especially Campbell. Please don’t name your child that.

How about Campbell for a boy and Wren for a girl?

I think this too. Campbell is a boy’s name in Scotland and does not sound like a girl’s name at all! It would be really unfair to saddle a girl with that name. I’ve also met female Wrens.

My dd has a Scottish surname as her middle name and she doesn't as a teen thank me for that. I don't think she would be talking to me if it was her first name.
Try and see your dd's view as teen, what would you have wanted.

Why does her middle name bother her? Most people don’t use it
