My DH keeps shooting down all my name suggestions, are they really that bad?

We may be expecting a child soon, so we have been stewing upon possible names. My recommendations have been Campbell if it's a girl (Not exactly as tribute to our insignificantly small Scottish heritage, more-so because I just really like the sound of it!) and Renn if it's a boy. Are these bad? I've thrown around the idea of Casimir, or Cassidy, but none of them seem to stick with him, is this a me issue?

If your DH likes Clare and you think it's too tame, would Clara work for you both?

Throwntothewolves · 12/03/2025 08:12

Other than as a surname, I've only ever heard Campbell used as a boys name. We live in Scotland.

He really liked more "classical" names like Elizabeth or Claire, they were a wee bit too tame for my taste though, Campbell is a distant family member's last name, and I suggested that as a more "classic" alternative.

🤦‍♀️. OP what you think is an unusual or ‘cool’ name now or for a kid isn’t a name for life. Think of this name on a cv? Working in business? Being hired…..

You are giving your kid a name that will set them up for life and your desire to be unusual will detract in later life.

MissDoubleU · 12/03/2025 08:18

Ren - like the Welsh rapper? 🤔

Wren is a beautiful name. Campbell is a last name, and not very nice for a girl at all. There are so many beautiful Scottish names for girls. Skye, Iona, Isla, Heather, Eilidh, Ceilidh, Bonnie.. why would you go with Campbell of all things!

Jade520 · 12/03/2025 07:50

Please don't call you child Magnolia - what a mouthful. Why don't you use Campbell for a boy? I'd have thought it was a boys name - or is that not the case? I love Iona, very pretty. Renn is a made up name so although i like the sound of it I'd definitely give that a miss.

Campbell is absolutely a boys name or surname.
Goodness only knows why you would use it for a girls first name. Middle name maybe it's not unusual to have a family surname as a middle name for any child.

It's only redeeming factor for a girl is the Bell, could become Bella or Belle.

Localres · 12/03/2025 08:23

Casimir Is a perfectly normal name … for a boy from Poland/Czech Republic - though spelled Kazimír or Kazimierz usually. You don’t mean you were considering it for a girl???

What are his suggestions? If we look at the names you love ad have suggested and those he loves and has suggested together, people here might be able to suggest some mutually appealing names.

The two of you re the ONLY two people who have to agree on a name, but you do have to agree on one.

OP said they ‘may be expecting a child soon’ (unusual turn of phrase) so there isn’t actually a baby yet. Hopefully some better names will be suggested by the time there is.

charmanderflame · 12/03/2025 08:24

Cassidy is the only one of your ideas that I would consider a first name tbh. I don't personally like it, but its a name.

Casimir sounds made up and try-too-hard.

Campbell is a surname, and Renn after a motorsport? Just no.

I knew a kid called Norton once (his dad loved motorbikes) and it was just so cringe. He got picked on a lot.

Your son might hate motorsport. Give him a name that is his own and doesn't have connotations like that.

Are you not even pregnant yet OP but already arguing about baby names?

FWIW, if you do want those names, Campbell (boy) and Renn (girl) are much better.

A friend of mine had a terrible fight with her fiance about baby names for the third of their hypothetical children (they weren't even trying to conceive their first at this point). I was quite nonplussed by their need to set them in stone so far in advance (and can't remember if they ended up using any of them for their actual children).

Except she’d definitely end up being called Soupy

Hwi · 12/03/2025 08:32

Sorry, spent a lot of time in the West of Scotland growing up and Campbell for a girl????? It will only suit a big and very butch Scottish boy - can't have a weedy boy called Campbell. Never met a boy called Renn in all the time I spent in Scotland. Truly awful choice.

WhatIsCorndogs · 12/03/2025 08:34

As someone who grew up with an unusual name, please name your child something classic and normal! Obviously do you what you want, but my name has been the bane of my life. Think about naming an adult who will have to explain their name to everyone, not just a baby.

Ellie56 · 12/03/2025 08:36

Campbell is a boy's name (and a soup)
Magnolia is a terrible paint colour (my mum had it everywhere) and Renn is too much like the indigestion remedy, although Wren would be ok.

Some lovely nature suggestions above.

brunettemic · 12/03/2025 08:38

So the suggestions are soup and types of free? I’m with your DH.

FiveBarGate · 12/03/2025 08:39

I've never met a girl called Campbell and I work in a Scottish school.

If you want Scottish and not so girly how about Brodie, Blair, Grier or Morven.

cramptramp · 12/03/2025 08:41

Silly names. All of them. No wonder he's shooting them down.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 12/03/2025 08:44

Campbell means 'crooked mouth'
There are lots of nicer girls Scottish names

Roseshavethorns · 12/03/2025 08:44

Campbell is a boy's name. It's a terrible name for a girl. Although I like it for a boy and know a couple of Campbells.
Renn would be constantly misspelled. They would think it is wren which is typically a girl's name.
Remember your child has that name all their life. I have a nephew who has a classic name with a quirky spelling. He hates it. It also isn't great from a work perspective for him.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 12/03/2025 08:45

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 12/03/2025 00:33

Never knew Campbell was a girl's name, it's a Scottish second name surely
and renn ? as in wren ?
Rennie maybe.
Cassidy was also a second name when I was growing up.

What is wrong with
Shona
Isla
Iona
Isabel
Fiona
Andrew
Alastair
Douglas
Grant

You 'may be expecting a child soon'?

So you're not even sure if you're pregnant?

Bit early to start thinking about names.

And Renn? You know they'll be called Rennie? After the antacid tablets?

crumblingschools · 12/03/2025 08:46

What do you mean you maybe expecting a child?

HugoYorway · 12/03/2025 08:47

Campbella and Rennie?

Katiesaidthat · 12/03/2025 08:48

You wish to call your daughter after soup and antiacids? I vote for Elizabeth.

Ceilidh is a dance not a girls name 🫣 agree with the rest though

The problem with a name like Campbell is less the name itself and more that you're bestowing the gift of hearing 'like the soup?' on that child for the rest of their life. Different is lovely but aim for 'oh what a gorgeous name' different rather than 'like the soup?' different.

Also there is the possibility of a girl wanting to change her surname if she gets married, she could end up with 'Campbell Campbell'.

OP for Scottish heritage whey not use a name that is an actual Scottish name or one that is more popular there than in England.

So James, Ian, Ewanor for a girl Isla, Ailsa, Cairistiona?

Renn I would think you were a Star Wars fan.
