I think it's the first one.

OP may I ask what is making you do a number of these threads with Indian names ? 😅

Are you (or the father) Asian?

HugoYorway · 06/03/2025 15:53

My friend's mum is called Laura. Do you like it?

She's called Laura in most places, apart from also being called Mum, Nan, Aunty Laura and Mrs Surname.

No for a made up story

My friends DD has this name. She pronounces it kal - e - AR - nee

Lentilweaver · 06/03/2025 17:42

Your repeated threads on this are quite weird. I am Indian.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/03/2025 17:42

Are you or baby’s father Asian? Nice enough name but if your surname is Smith, for example, might sound a bit silly.

So you’re repeatedly asking us what we think of Indian names, but this is to name a book character not an actual baby? I’m not sure what you’re looking to get out of this tbh - you want a character with a name that the women of mumsnet like?

HugoYorway · 06/03/2025 19:27

Write about what you know @PriyankaMaria , which seemingly isn't Indian-heritage named women.

no i just want opinions, @PuffinLord , is it a crime to have a little name block and ask opinions on names i like (no offence)

Sure, it’s a pretty name, I just don’t think anybody (other than your editor) can really tell you whether a name will fit with your character/story,

I think it might just be cheaper and easier to buy a baby name book or go on some of the baby name sites. What MN mums like or dislike won't have any bearing on your character in your story. As I wrote yesterday, character names are 'shorthand' to help your reader understand your character; age, background, ethnicity, social grouping etc. So pulling some random Indian name out just because you like Indian names, won't help your story, unless there's some long and complicated backstory about why your non-Indian character has an Indian name (which, unless it is an integral part of your story, is just wasted words). If your character IS Indian, then I suggest you ask some Indian people about the use of names (background, age, etc). Just putting random names is pointless as, unless you are asking Indian women only, we don't know the background or the social status of Indian naming conventions.

There is no rule that all the opinions asked for on here need to be for real life babies!!

Ask away for inspiration and opinions on book characters :)

I like the name and think it would work nicely in a story
