Thoughts on different versions of the name Zac??

Hi all,

I love the name Zachary but it really does not work with his surname (very rhymey). I’m also not a huge fan of Zachariah. He will be known as Zac in every day life but considering a longer name for his bc. Thoughts on Zacarai (like samurai) but wondering if this is asking for a lifetime of mispronunciation?

OH just says put Zac on the bc if that’s what we will call him!

Any thoughts would be appreciated x

What about Isaac? If you go for Zac as the full name I would spell it Zach or Zack as for some reason Zac looks more like an abbreviation.

GrumpySparkler · 04/03/2025 11:51

We had this issue as well OP. Both liked Zac as a nickname, but didn't want it as a full name. Neither of us like Zachariah. DH wanted Zachary. I wanted Isaac.
We ended up naming our DS completely different 😂
Sorry, not much help there!

Yellowmustang · 04/03/2025 11:57

@Lund I really like Isaac but OH isn’t keen and won’t budge on it.

That’s a shame - it’s a lovely name. Can’t think of any other options sorry!

I think Zach is fine as a stand alone but I would spell it like this (or Zack, or even Zak). Zac looks incomplete, like a nickname.

Yes as said above maybe go for Zach.
It looks more like a "full" name.

I would agree with this - Zac looks unfinished somehow. Personally I'd go with Zack. I think it's fine to have that on the birth certificate, it's a commonly used name.

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/03/2025 15:20

I would go for Zack as the full name.

floppybit · 04/03/2025 15:47

I much prefer Zac to Zack and Zach

Goandygo · 04/03/2025 15:49

I think Zack as a full name is fine.

Busted2006 · 04/03/2025 17:46

I would also just go Zac or Zack on the BC.
Yes people might assume his name is Zachary but so what, correct them.

I know lots of Isaac’s and none of them shorted it to Zac, they are all just Isaac.

caringcarer · 04/03/2025 18:54

What about Izak.

shoopshoopdedoo · 04/03/2025 19:01

I generally prefer a “full” name on the birth cert, but if you don’t like Zachary or Isaac I think Zac is fine as a stand alone name. Definitely better than Zacarai!

My son is a Zachary and is known as Zac. He’s autistic and is dumbfounded when people spell his name Zach as ever since learning his phonics he wonders why people insist on ending his name with the ‘ch’ sound!

Mumofteenandtween · 04/03/2025 19:23

I seem to know a huge number of Zack / Zachs. I would say that Zacks are mainly full names whilst Zachs are short for Zachary. I don’t know any Zacs - it looks wrong to me but probably because I don’t know any.

Emanwenym · 04/03/2025 19:43

I only like Zac. Zach looks like 'zatch' and Zack is too close to Jack.
The added letter make me think of names with extra letters like Thom.
Zachary is OK. Zacarai is awful.

NewBrightonEel · 04/03/2025 19:52

My grandson is Zeke - short for Ezekiel.

Kitkate21 · 04/03/2025 20:01

My son is a Zachary gets called Zach. He's is S4 and the only one in both primary and academy so far! But I do know another Zack but he's a Zack over Zachary.

Ellmau · 04/03/2025 20:05

I think Zacarai is easy and obvious to pronounce, but everyone will think it's been mis spelled. Zac feels too short for a full name.

Might Zacharias work better for you than Zacariah?

LemograssLollipop · 04/03/2025 20:39

My son is called Zackariya. We are Muslim and he is named after an esteemed prophet.
We shorten it to Zac and he is known as Zac. It works because his initials are also ZAC - wasn't intentional either,!
Often misspelt Zach or Zak. If it's someone we know it's annoying because people can be lazy with spelling.

NeedToAskPlease · 04/03/2025 20:57

My friends son is called Izac

user1492757084 · 05/03/2025 03:06

Zach looks to be the best alternative for you.

mathanxiety · 05/03/2025 03:55

Another option is Zacchaeus.

MirandaBlu · 05/03/2025 05:23

I really like Isak, which is a variation of Isaac in various languages (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, etc.) But it might just lead to misspellings in an English-speaking country.

Of the Zac/Zach/Zack/Zak choices, I prefer Zac - it doesn't seem unfinished to me; I'd perhaps just equate it with French-origin boys' names like Marc or Luc - and then Zach. Zak and Zack seem less formal to me, especially Zack, but I think it's very subjective.

Finnish uses Saku as an equivalent of Zach (long form is Sakari) which I think is kind of cool but maybe a bit "out there".
