Help me cut down this list of boy names:

Acacias
Idris
Lucius
Ozias
Xavier
Magnus
Cassius
Sylvan
Ellery
Ambrose

Any of suggestions? We want something slightly unique but not weird

Out of those, I like Lucius, but I do associate it with Harry Potter! Perhaps Lucian, or Luciano?

Acacias- makes me think of the tree species Acacia
Idris- great name
Ozias- never hear of, not my cup of tea
Xavier- cool name
Magnus- like it
Cassius- not for me
Sylvan- nah
Ellery- nah
Ambrose- nah

Other suggestions: Phoenix, Atticus, Xander, Mateo, Boaz, Wesley, Wyatt, Lorenzo, Griffin.

MinPinSins · 01/03/2025 10:49

Unhelpfully, I really like them all (and before someone else says it, none are unique).

Assuming you mean very uncommon/unusual, Xavier is an easy removal. It's currently ranked at 215, which is probably higher than you want.

By unique I meant unusual. These are all names we don't know anyone with in real life.
But maybe Xavier is too common

I like Idris and Xavier best. Ozias I haven’t heard before but it could grow on me - Ozzy is a great nn!

Hard nos for me would be - Acacias (a plant), Sylvan (too feminine) and Ellery (girls name to me)

Acacias - lots of shrubs. 'Use for a house not a boy.
Idris - Muslim name, fairly popular. OK if Welsh, I suppose.
Lucius - too close to Lucy
Ozias - Oz-eye-us? Will be Ozzy
Xavier - Zayv-yuh is OK, Ex-ay-vee-h not OK
Magnus -fine, will be Mags/Maggy
Cassius - OK, will be Cass
Sylvan - no, sorry
Ellery - no
Ambrose - no

Shortlist: Magnus or Cassius
I like Xavier, but ruled it out because of the confusion with pronunciation.
The names are not unique and are a bit try hard.

Lando

rainbowstardrops · 02/03/2025 09:40

I like Xavier the best. I like Xander too. I knew a Xavier years and years ago at school but haven't come across another since.

timoteigirl · 02/03/2025 09:47

From your names I like Xavier most.

Acacias - usually tree names are in singular
Idris - not that unusual
Lucius - Malfoy association
Ozias - would end up being called Ozzie
Xavier - why not, like X-men
Magnus - common on mumsnet, don't know in real life
Cassius - Muhammed Ali
Sylvan - another woody name. What about Sylvester?
Ellery and Ambrose - like least. IMHO similar style as Percy etc. Emrys nicer if you have a Welsh connection.

What about Quentin if you want letters such as Z X Q?

Another suggestion is Marius. Really easy and nature name but not as common in UK as in some other countries.

Linus
Caspian
Casimir - if you don't mind the meaning
Loxley
Peregrine
Wolfram

KnickerlessParsons · 02/03/2025 10:43

That's a very eclectic list!

•Acacias - awful
•Idris - lovely
•Lucius - too Harry Potter. Lucian/Lucien is better
•Ozias - awful
•Xavier - not unique and would have pronunciation issues (zay-vier or zav-ier)
•Magnus - not good if he turns out small
•Cassius - Clay - so no
•Sylvan - families, so no. Particularly if your city people.
•Ellery
•Ambrose

And beyond school? School is just over a decade. He'll then have the rest of his life with a mundane name, one of several in the office if he's working with older people.

Ambrose is great, OP, though I like a name with good nn options and I don't know what you'd easily shorten Ambrose to.

KnickerFolder · 04/03/2025 13:44

I love Ozias. I also like Oziah or Oziel, or if you want to go Anglo Saxon rather than Hebrew, how about Osric?

Cosmo
Edmund
Caius

My nearly 14 year old is called Xavier (Zay-vee-er) and not come across a single other one! It's a beautiful name

Yellowcakestand · 04/03/2025 23:37

My sons name is on another posters list here and he is the only one in his primary with this name out of 400+ children.

I know someone with a Lucio (Loo- chee-oh) which i quite like
