Rylan!

My cousin had a little boy on Valentine's Day. He's not had a name until today -he's Rylan William. I like it but do you think he will be made fun of?

Yes he will

Snorlaxo · 19/02/2025 17:44

His peers won’t know Rylan Clark (who I assume is your reason for the post )

purpleme12 · 19/02/2025 17:46

I don't get why he'd be made fun of?

BootballJoy · 19/02/2025 17:47

I don't think he will be made fun of. Nursery age we know boys called: Zephyr, Blaze, Atlas, Arlen, Archer, Oakley, Edison, River, Jonty, Ned, Otis etc a real range. There's so much variety these days.

Or do you mean because of the presenter? Is he that well known amongst the younger generation? Again I can't really see why it would lead to teasing?

AlvisParsley · 19/02/2025 17:52

I thought it would lead to teasing because of the celebrity connotation. Like naming your child after a celebrity. She's not really done that, she likes the name (as do I).

Maybe he will, maybe he won’t. My experience is that while names can used to tease a child, children aren’t picked on because of their names. A confident, popular child can wear any name well, and having a theoretically ‘unbulliable’ name doesn’t help if people want to be nasty to you, because any name can be turned against someone. Just ask poor Psycho Sarah from my school, whose Mumsnet approved name didn’t help her at all, while other kids with names that people here would see a cruel and unusual punishment sailed through.

Does your cousin know you’re offering her newborn’s name up for public approval? I’m expecting a baby soon, and wouldn’t be pleased to see my family soliciting opinions from strangers on their name, even if it was with a disclaimer they liked it. And it’s not like he’s called Oliver James where there are so many that the parents can’t be sure it’s their baby being discussed.

FromHere · 19/02/2025 17:58

Rylan's name isn't Rylan anyway I doubt his classmates will be aware of him, might get a few raised eyebrows from parents though, like we did with Ryu Thor, Messi and Ronaldo.

ThePinkPowerRangers · 19/02/2025 18:37

Didn’t Rylan make up the name? Or at least he renamed himself. His real name is Ross anyway.

CraneBeak · 19/02/2025 19:04

I've never heard of Rylan, is it like Ryan combined with Dylan? It sounds like a straightforward enough name, I don't think young DC will care about an old presenter.

Emanwenym · 19/02/2025 19:05

You are probably outing yourself @AlvisParsley , and your cousin will probably not be happy with you.

This!! ^^

Hope your cousin doesn't read MN...

I was a teacher for 30 years and never heard of anyone being teased about their name. One boy in Reception said Bailey was a dog's name but I soon put him right. A lot of children have unusual names these days.

In 5-10 years time I don’t think primary school children will know about a 2010s tv presenter

sanityisamyth · 19/02/2025 20:04

It's an awful name but the celebrity comes across as thick as two short planks so that probably doesn't help.

I don't think he is. He plays a part some of the time but he's actually not thick at all. It's not his real name anyway, it's Ross Richard.

Neurotoxic · 19/02/2025 21:40

Nah I don't think kids will make fun of him for that name. It doesn't sound like a rude word or anything. Apparently the name comes from 'Rye Land' anyway so is more established than just Rylan Clark.

MinnieCoops · 19/02/2025 21:53

No

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/02/2025 01:22

Impossible to know. At the moment it’s unlikely imo but if there’s hardly any other Rylan’s about in future and the TV presenter does something really newsworthy (in an embarrassing or negative way) then yes there could be teasing. That’s a risk with using uncommon names in general though, it’s not specific to Rylan.

user1492757084 · 20/02/2025 06:35

Rylan William is okay. I don't like Rylan.
I would prefer Ryland or Roland

Ryland Valentine
Roland Valentine
William Valentine
Ryan Valentine
Ryan William

AlvisParsley · 20/02/2025 13:05

My ex is Ryan so I wouldn't want to be reminded of him!

Rylan the celebrity seems a fab guy!!
Better than calling him Jimmy.....

Not according to Mumsnetters. In reality they probably do given half a chance.
There's no way a Ewan Kerr or Isla White type name would go unteased.

He is probably considerably richer than you though
