Yup sorry, it sounds chavvy. Both Nyla and Mae and the hyphen.

user1492757084 · 18/02/2025 03:25

I think chavvy, yes.

Ideas:
Nichola Mae
Alizee Mary
Noella May
Nola Marion

Happyinarcon · 18/02/2025 03:28

What about Twyla?

BoleynMemories13 · 18/02/2025 07:38

Nyla is very modern and the hyphenating names trend (especially with Mae) can be seen as quite down-market, so the two together does make for the vibe you're trying to avoid I'm afraid.

My advice would be to go for Nyla Mae (no hyphen) or even try to find a different middle name, avoiding Mae completely, if you don't want to creep into that category.

Ultimately though, it's your baby. Pick what you love. The label you fear describes personality traits rather than a name. A name alone does not make a personal chavvy, but I totally understand why you would want to avoid that association.

StormingNorman · 18/02/2025 07:42

Chavvy. Stay away from anything hyphened with Mae if you don’t want trashy. Mae as a first name I love!

Emanwenym · 18/02/2025 08:21

Nyla seems to be Arabic in origin, but it will sound like Isla and Lila.
-Mae is awful.

Nyla May isn't too bad but it looks and sounds a bit boring. May as a middle name is overused.

Mumofgirls2017 · 18/02/2025 09:42

Nyla is ok but will get mixed up with Isla, myla, Lilah etc as they are more known. Afraid I’m not a fan of anything hyphened and think it doesn’t sound very classy! how about….

nola
nora
mila
lara
nella
orla
kaia
nina
maya
maeve
mabel

GreyhoundGal1 · 18/02/2025 09:42

I'm not a fan of hyphenated names, I don't think a lot of people are and can imagine it will cause a lot of admin hassle for your child. It did for my husband who has a double-barreled surname which is a lot more common. The hyphen is not often an option in forms (even when booking flights for example).

If you don't like Nyla by itself some names that give similar sounds to Nyla-Mae: Naomi, Esme, Amy/Aimee, Salome, Paloma, Macey, Maeve, Mabel, Nancy, Natalia, Nadia

StampOnTheGround · 18/02/2025 09:48

Nyla is fine on its own, but definitely do not hyphenate and especially not with mae.

Moreteaandchocolate · 18/02/2025 10:02

Nyla Mae (without the hyphen) is lovely and not trashy sounding to me.

ThePinkPowerRangers · 18/02/2025 10:17

Yup it’s trashy. Mae has been done to death as middle name. Every girl is a something Mae/May/Mai. It’s so boring!

bridgetreilly · 18/02/2025 12:40

The -Mae automatically kicks it into chavdom.

timoteigirl · 18/02/2025 13:50

Agree with the above posters. Alternatives to Nyla:

Layla Maya Skylar Skyla Suri Marlee Dana

Emanwenym · 18/02/2025 14:08

Nuala, Nola, Nova?

Yes. Exactly this. Awful. Nyla is not a particularly name either. Nia is better.

KayEmAy · 18/02/2025 14:45

Love Nyla

Comedycook · 18/02/2025 14:48

Adding the -Mae is the issue imo...it's dated and a bit downmarket.

Nyla is not so bad...but there are many more variations or similar names which are nicer imo.

Nora
Nina
Nova
Luna
Mya
Maya
Lyra
Ayla

user2848502016 · 18/02/2025 15:11

It is chavvy sorry , I find anything with a hyphen chavvy

Nyla and Mae are pretty bad

May is pretty,

Or maybe something like:
Myla
Maya
Lola
Lyla
Layla
Maisie

Goscat · 18/02/2025 21:24

Obviously it's each to their own, but whenever I hear a double first name my mind always jumps to tacky I'm afraid.

user1492757084 · 19/02/2025 02:48

Phryne Margaret
