Ezra and Aria?

We have an Aria. Would it be odd to have Ezra as our boys name?

We chose Aria because of its meaning and we loved it. I had heard it on pretty little liars the show.

We're having a boy and LOVE Ezra, not because of the show!!!.... is this too odd. Would people notice?

Think it’s a good sibling combo. I have no idea what this show is.

MummaMummaJumma · 14/02/2025 21:17

Lovely name! I haven’t heard of the show either x

sorepaw1 · 14/02/2025 21:19

I saw your post and immediately came here to see if you knew the connection! Maybe it depends on age - i am 40 and know it as had a teenager when it was huge. I think it will only be known by a very specific age group

Alohamora7 · 14/02/2025 21:21

I made the connection straight away as a mid 30s female… I don’t think our kids would make the connection growing up (their parents and teachers maybe)

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/02/2025 21:48

I have no idea what show you mean! Love the names together.

Busted2006 · 14/02/2025 22:32

No clue of the show.

I think they sound good together

Comedycook · 14/02/2025 22:33

I don't get it...

I think the OP is saying both Aria and Ezra are on the a TV show called ‘pretty little liars’. Her question is, would people be aware of that. Sort of like having Buzz and Woody - people would constantly ask “Were their names inspired by Toy Story?”.

aveenobambino · 14/02/2025 23:01

Haha sorry I got it and used to love the show but no, I'd still go for it!

It’s a tiny bit worse than Buzz and Woody. In PLL Aria was a 16 year old girl, Ezra was her (fully grown man) English teacher who pursues her and they have a relationship - one that is implied to be sweet and romantic, not predatory and gross.

that being said the show is long since over and doesn’t seem to be developing any cult status like Gossip Girl, Friends, or Grey Anatomy. So the connection will be noticed less and less as time goes on.

Ladamesansmerci · 14/02/2025 23:08

I'm 31, and immediately thought of the show 🤣

🤣🤣 never seen the show but now it makes more sense why the OP wanted some perspective!

ChaosAndToast · 14/02/2025 23:15

As a 30 year old I made the connection straight away but it's a pretty old show now

RoundoffFlick · 14/02/2025 23:18

Wouldn't make the connection. My immediate thought was they are both very 2020s names, names that in the future you will be able to link to a very specific few years. They do go very nicely together.

chergar · 14/02/2025 23:25

I immediately thought of the show, my 18 year old daughter would know it as well as PLL is on iplayer (or Netflix or something) and she has watched it as have a few of her friends

surreygirl1987 · 14/02/2025 23:35

Yeh, I'm afraid I think it would be weird. Maybe a lot of mumsnetters don't get the connection but loads of people will. I came on this thread because I thought it was going to be a thread bashing Ezra for grooming Aria 'such a disturbing relationship!!

SlinkySprings · 14/02/2025 23:46

I don't think pretty little liars will stand the test of time mainly thanks to running on for way too many seasons and having a weird crap ending so you will be fine.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/02/2025 23:52

I did make the connection but it’s quite a niche audience- I just can’t see PLL making cult status or becoming super popular and the general population becoming aware of it (imo it’s seen as “a teenage girl show” and not one that crosses audience markets like Buffy or something).

So imo you are fine OP - and luckily Ezra and Aria are popular Top 100 names here too, so even if someone did make the connection, I doubt they would comment. I think they would assume the parents liked them due to their popular sound, rather than naming their kids after a teacher and his student on an American TV show iykwim?

RogueFemale · 19/02/2025 01:06

I've never heard of the TV show but clearly, from the comments here, quite a few people will think of the connection in the names.

I also made the connection instantly but only because I binge watched that show once when I had too much time on my hands. I don't think that many people would think of it though. The show wasn't that popular.

Tabbsi · 22/02/2025 08:53

I wouldn’t personally choose a biblical name such as Ezra, but it sounds cool.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/02/2025 08:55

Nice combo
never heard of the show
I’m quite ancient tho (46)

KatyN · 22/02/2025 08:57

My children have family names which happened to be paired in a very popular film about 20 years ago.
Sometimes people comment, but only people my age. No one in their generation knows the film.

Both characters were lovely luckily!

YourAmberFawn · 23/03/2025 10:45

A lot of MN’s may not know the show but I think nearly every woman currently aged between 18-28 knows that show.

It was incredibly popular and I don’t know of anybody in that age range who hasn’t at least heard of the characters.

Your kids peers most probably won’t know it and won’t make the connection, but I reckon all other mums in your circle / your kids teachers will definitely make the connection.

For me it’s a definite no.
