First Child's Name!!

YourKindPeachShark · 13/02/2025 22:30

Hello Fellow Mumsnetters!
I'm currently pregnant with my first child, my husband and I are very very excited to meet our beautiful baby boy 😊. I'm currently 7 months pregnant and we haven't really come to a name we both really love.
My husband and I both really love a more classic name we have decided that his middle name will honour my father.
Some names that I quite like are:
Arthur
Charlie
Freddie
My Husband likes these names:
Jasper
Felix
Louis
We are both quite stubborn 😂 and because of this we simply can't decide what name we like best!
Any recommendations would be appreciated greatly!! ☺️

They’re great names. Yours seem more traditionally strong names while your DH’s seem a bit more alternative/creative.

Some I thought might cross over:

Ferdie/Ferdinand
Tristan
Xavier
August
Jonty
Joss/Jocelyn
Sebastian
Willem
Thibauld
Dominic

Moreteaandchocolate · 13/02/2025 22:38

All are nice names - Arthur and Freddie are everywhere round me so wouldn’t be for me. Louis would be my pick of your lists.

Do you like

Jonah
Stanley
Isaac
Zachary
Isaiah
Casper
Hugo
Toby
Dexter
Rory
Lewis
Finley

I really love a classic too, but classic to me for boys would usually be King/Emperor names or the more historically popular Biblical names - so of your list only Arthur and Louis would count (Charles and Frederick obviously are too if you use the longer versions - in fact I personally like those two the most). I do quite like Felix and Jasper, but I think of them as slightly quirky “fun” names rather than classics as such (which tend to feel a little more stately or serious to me).

The type of names I see as classics (though this list isn’t exhaustive and not all are “timeless” classics - the ones toward the end are somewhat dated now):
Thomas
James
William
Henry
Edward
Alexander
George
David
Joseph
Daniel
Michael
Samuel
Louis
Charles
Frederick
Arthur
Benjamin
Adam
Matthew
Robert
John
Alfred
Maximilian
Luke
Nicholas
Christopher
Peter
Stephen
Richard
Phillip
Francis
Andrew
Paul
Mark
Simon

I prefer your husband's names, I have to admit. Yours are a but faddy imo, especially Charlie and Freddie, and Arthur is very popular.

Louis Arthur or Felix Arthur would be nice.
Jasper Charles too, if you feel you could compromise.

Kioki · 14/02/2025 04:03

The only one I like is Louis.
To me Jasper and Felix are cat names, Arthur isn't my taste at all and Charlie & Freddie are a bit boring (sorry).

Eenameenadeeka · 14/02/2025 04:12

Arthur and Charlie are Lovely, you could just have a list and see what he looks like when you meet him

bluebunnys · 14/02/2025 07:08

Arthur and Louis are great

How about
Caspar
Quentin
Reuben

Firsttimebabymummy · 14/02/2025 07:15

All are nice.
I like Charlie and Louis best, simply as I work in a nursery and there's loads of Arther/ Freddie etc.

EcruCardigan · 14/02/2025 10:45

Arthur - very popular currently
Charlie - has been very popular for ages, but I like it if short for Charles
Freddie - has been very popular for decades

Jasper - faddy, popular for dogs
Felix - faddy, popular for cats
Louis - ok but Louie isn't.

Your choices are fine but he'll always be Firstname Surname.
I'm less keen on your DH's list.

Have a look on darkgreener for an idea of how popular they are: Babies called Arthur in England & Wales since 1996
and bear in mind that many Charlies might be registered as Charles or Charley, Freddies as Frederick, and Louis as Louie.

Also, in my year at school there weren't many Susans and Stephens, but every workplace I've been in has had several Sues and Steves.

Thibald….seriously?

Backhometothenorth · 14/02/2025 11:12

How about Alexander - traditional but with some great shortened versions

shoopshoopdedoo · 14/02/2025 16:27

Arthur - not keen personally, very popular
Charlie - like, prefer it as a nn for Charles
Freddie - like, but definitely the most popular name I come across for baby/toddler boys (I have two young kids and that’s a LOT of Freddie’s!)

Jasper - really, really don’t like it at all
Felix - not keen
Louis - not keen

How about:
James, Alexander, Thomas…
I feel like these seem more popular than they currently are as we probably know plenty of adult ones, but you don’t come across quite so many little ones! Definitely more likely to meet a baby Jasper.

All the above names are fine, I have no doubt that the two of you will agree on one eventually.

But I would just say that Charlie should be Charles, and Freddie should be Frederick, because your son should have the option to use the formal or informal version as an adult. You are naming an adult, not just a baby.

MarshmallowClouds · 19/02/2025 09:10

Alexander/Xander
Peter
Francis
Jonathan
Paul

IsoldeWagner · 19/02/2025 09:14

Not Teddy or Alfie. That's every 3rd boy round here
You're naming a man, so Charles or Frederick which you can shorten to Charlie or Freddie.
I really like your list @IamnotwhouthinkIam . Not faddy or cutesy, but suitable for a grown up.

I love Paul - plus it's not over used.

IsoldeWagner · 19/02/2025 09:16

Gall10 · 14/02/2025 10:50

Thibald….seriously?

True - also calling a child Willem is setting him up for a lifetime of correcting it from William.

Aldora · 19/02/2025 09:18

I like Jovie or Jovey

Very unusual and not common at all

Notgivenuphope · 19/02/2025 09:20

Nothing with ‘ie’ please unless you are birthing a dog

bluebunnys · 19/02/2025 09:23

Thibald….seriously?

If spelled correctly, Thibault, then it's a great name!

MarshmallowClouds · 19/02/2025 09:34

IsoldeWagner · 19/02/2025 09:15

I love Paul - plus it's not over used.

Me too. I wanted to use it, but it didn’t work with our surname.

OrangeCushioning · 19/02/2025 09:40
