Hi all, I posted before but looking to know thoughts on this.

We have a toddler named Eve and are expecting baby girl 2. We love the name May it’s our favourite name but our surname is McManus and we are worried it doesn’t flow.

Thoughts on May McManus?

Moier · 13/02/2025 18:29

I've tried saying it aloud and l got tongue tied.

TomatoSandwiches · 13/02/2025 18:30

No, what about Faye McManus?

Not really a fan of Faye, can’t really figure out why, I think it’d because my childhood brownies leader was called Faye and I just picture a slightly shouty, older woman who terrified me for 3 years!

Doesn't sound like that at all 🤷

GoldMoon · 13/02/2025 18:33

It's fine , I don't often like same letter 1st / 2nd name , but yours fits well .

Understandable!

Needmorelego · 13/02/2025 18:34

@Evmamai I like it.
May is a pretty name. People aren't addressed by their full name very often.

What about Mary McManus?

Also not a fan of Mary, I have two auntie Mary’s and don’t think it sounds as nice as May. Gosh I’m picky!

Do you pronounce the surname Mack manus or muck or mick manus? I’m just asking how “Mc” is pronounced generally, but how you say it. I think that May (said in a Scottish accent) flows better with the more open “Mack” pronounciation but you might not be Scottish.

It’s pretty though and I think the triple capital M is fun.

Bear in mind if you are Scottish the name “May” does sound very different when English people say it.

NeonGiraffe · 13/02/2025 18:38

It's great, really pretty, I love the way it flows.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 13/02/2025 18:38

I like it. Like you I love the name May

Did you really just tell someone they had a ridiculous surname? How rude!

I think I say it more Mic than Mac or Muc! We are Scottish though, I think it sounds fine when DH and I say it but I don’t know if that is just because I like it so much!

Ridiculous in what way? It’s a fairly common surname?

I think it's great!

Iwishiwasapolarbear · 13/02/2025 18:40

I think it’s a bit of a tongue twister

do you like Rae? or maybe a longer name beginning with m like Megan, Mabli, Mabel, Maia, Molly etc

Yea I thought of Mick as a third option after I posted. Go for it, it sounds like you love it so no need to second guess yourselves.

Still being picky I know but I don’t really like any of those names. Lovely names but I just can’t imagine my little girl being named any of them!

I think it's a lovely name but I am also Scottish so used to Macs and Mcs. I think because the a sounds are different - ay and ah - it's fine.
