Do these names work for brothers ?

Can Max and Raphael work for brothers?

I like the names individually but for some reason am not confident in them as a pair, also not sure how much that should matter or not. They are mixed European / Australian, living in Australia. We want them to have international, timeless names - nothing over trendy. Conscious here that one boy would have a common / top 100 name, other would have a more uncommon name. Again, should it matter?

Keen to hear opinions on the set, and also any personal experience that might be relatable.

Love both names. I think they would work well for brothers.

SecondMrsTanqueray · 09/02/2025 14:49

Lovely names. They don’t need to have any sort of cohesion.

MistyF · 09/02/2025 14:51

they are both common names and both are likely to be loved by same set of people

MistyF · 09/02/2025 15:02

But they do go well enough. They are both names that could work in 5 century AD in Rome (meaning they are classicist name), they work in multiple European countries irrelevant of language, they are names that don't look out of place on white kids or kids from background different than Europe and look good on rich and poor kids.
I wouldn't choose them, but they are fine names.

DoItBetter · 09/02/2025 15:05

They are nice names and seem fine if they were for brothers. Sibling names don't have to match or sound similar. Just choose the names you like the most. I can see avoiding rhyming sibling names or names that sound silly together but trying to match them as similar names is pointless.

murasaki · 09/02/2025 15:06

I think they're great names and work well together.

Choccyp1g · 09/02/2025 15:07

If I was Max I'd feel short changed in syllables.

If I was Max I'd feel short changed in syllables.

As they are in Aus they'll get called Maxi and Rafi anyway, so they'll have the same!

AubernFable · 09/02/2025 15:20

Max and Rafi is cute, or Maxi like PP said, but Max on it’s own is a bit uninspired imo, being so much shorter and more common than Raphael.

AfroHungarian · 09/02/2025 15:48

Max is a dog's name for me. If there was a 'proper name' with it like Maxime or Maxence it would be cute.

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/02/2025 21:34

I think they do have a similar, international vibe - and Maxi and Rafi are perfect together!

DemonicCaveMaggot · 09/02/2025 21:37

I would name your child Maximilian or Maxim (although maybe not because of the magazine) and use Max as a nickname.

Rafael is great and I think both names are fine together.

Rafael and Donatello or Rafael and Leonardo would be a definite no.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 09/02/2025 21:43

I feel like I'd end up using Rafe to even it up with Max.

I have a one syllable name and love it.

Boardingschoolmumoftwo · 09/02/2025 21:51

I think Max is a bit underwhelming, what about Magnus, Julian or Jasper

theduchessofspork · 09/02/2025 23:16

Yes they are nice and they go well

I guess if I met a Max with a brother Raphael I’d probably guess his full name was Maximilian or Maximus.

Raphael is often shortened to Raff if that bothers you.

Max/Maxim/Maximilian and Raphael/Rafael are well known in Australia.

user1492757084 · 10/02/2025 07:18

You could go Rafael and Roger
