Beatrice?

I'm not a fan of unusual names and I don't particularly need my children's names to be unique or 'special'. I do, however, feel strongly about them not having names that could be ridiculed or that they would be likely to dislike.

I love the classic name Beatrice, but I've read a few comments online by people who feel that it's 'frumpy' and they also have concerns that it can be read as 'beat rice' (a bit far-fetched in my opinion! When would anyone use the phrase 'beat rice'?). Ultimately the name would be for the child and not for me, so any honest thoughts would be welcome!

Love it! I think it's impossible to avoid any names with uncomfortable ideas - there's lot of way some names might be 'bad' and in majority of cases, worry at the start of pregnancy doesn't even matter when child goes to school

Overtheatlantic · 09/02/2025 12:03

It’s a beautiful classic name with Italian, royal and literary references.

AubernFable · 09/02/2025 12:12

Beatrice is lovely!

MelisandeLongfield · 09/02/2025 12:16

Nice and some choice with nicknames - Bea, Tris, Trissy, Trixie, Beattie.

Snowmanscarf · 09/02/2025 12:18

Not frumpy at all, and lovely classic name.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 09/02/2025 12:24

My DD knows a 17 yo Beatrice. DD calls her Bea.

Our cat is also called Beatrice.

Oaktree1952 · 09/02/2025 12:26

I have a Beatrice. It means joy bringer. Which sums up my dd perfectly!

BootballJoy · 09/02/2025 13:00

Nothing wrong with Beatrice. I used to go to a café called Beatrice in Italy, and it has a lovely pronunciation in Italian if she ever spends time in Italy! Bea is a great shortening.

Waterboatlass · 09/02/2025 13:04

It's lovely! Classic and pretty.

No idea what Beat Rice is about. It doesn't mean anything. Anyone unfamiliar with the name will pick it up easily on introduction.

MustBeThursday · 09/02/2025 13:12

I have a Beatrice, so I'm biased, but I think it is a lovely name.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 09/02/2025 13:13

I love it (and it's rare I love any of the names on here). Classic and heartwarming for some reason!

ICanTellYouMissMe · 09/02/2025 13:15

I do think it's quite grumpy, yes, but think I'm the only one on this thread, so the majority seem to like it.

I'm not an old lady name type though; my friend just had a baby named Enid and I have my own private thoughts about that 😬

ICanTellYouMissMe · 09/02/2025 13:16

FFS. Frumpy. Not grumpy. 😂

theallotmentqueen · 09/02/2025 13:17

I love the name Beatrice! I've always thought that the nickname 'Bea' is really cute as well

OSU · 09/02/2025 13:29

It's a lovely name. Was on our shortlist for DD 😊

shoopshoopdedoo · 09/02/2025 13:30

It’s nice

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/02/2025 15:43

Love it! I don’t see it as frumpy - I know a cool teen who goes by “Bea” and it suits her!

Crunchymum · 09/02/2025 15:54

Have DN who is a Beatrice. In her younger years she was a "Bee". Her mum went mental with anything bee themed until when she was about 13 she decided she was a Bea and never wanted to see another bee birthday card again 😂

She rocks both the cool Bea and the classical Beatrice. In fact had not already had this name in the family, it would have been top of our list.

theduchessofspork · 09/02/2025 22:12

It’s a lovely name and quite well used so I wouldn’t worry about it, she’s not going to get teased - and it’s certainly not frumpy as it’s been consistently popular-ish for 20 years or more. Bea is nice too.

Emanwenym · 10/02/2025 13:45

The 'beat rice' is something and nothing, some smartarse might say it.
It's a lovely classic name and not too overused.

bluebunnys · 10/02/2025 15:27

Beat Rice Grin

How about Beatrix? I much prefer that spelling. It looks more English to me

KayEmAy · 10/02/2025 16:53

While I'm not super keen on Beatrice I do love the nickname Bea

RubyBirdy · 10/02/2025 19:32

Beautiful name, I love it. It would’ve been on my list if DH hadn’t inexplicably said no.

MumChp · 10/02/2025 19:33

It was on our list for d2. I find it lovely.
