The name Blake, or similar?

Hey guys, expecting a boy soon and really like the name Blake. But am I missing any other great names to think over?

I like one or two syllable names. I prefer the harder sounding letters (don’t know the best way to describe that!) as opposed to softer sounding names.

Any great suggestions fellow mumsnetters?

Thank you

That's a surname.
Might cause confusion.
Why not pick a first name.

Maybe Clark, Leal or Heath? (Is Heath too soft sounding?) Or something like Bennett is quite underused, yet is in the style of popular Elliott and also gives him everyday nn Ben if he wants something more commonplace.

Maybe uncommon short names like Lev, Zev or Orin?

And I agree Axel and Rafe seem good shouts - I’ve met a couple of younger ones now.

Nothing wrong with Blake as such though - actually it used to make me think of William Blake which is a cool namesake. It does seem much more unisex now though if that matters, especially since Blake Lively is often in the media.

Blake is a bit of an 70s/80s name to me thanks to Dynasty and Blake's 7.

I teach a Blane, a Brogan and a Bryce currently..
B names I like Beau, Beckett and Bram.

I don't usually like surnames as first names, but I love Blake.

My DS has a friend with that name so I suppose that influences me.

Use it if you like it, it's a strong name and I think it's quite cool.

Blake was on my list. I always thought the name Giles was in the same vein

Not to my style but I find Tate and Axel to be similar in style. Or Blaise but this spelling, Blaze as suggested above looks like he's be a member of the Paw Patrol.

SophieGee · 09/02/2025 08:25

Rafe is too much like raphe, which is the seam joining bollocks together. A boy called Rafe in my son’s year got teased for this because one kids mother (a nurse) told him.

TheBirdintheCave · 09/02/2025 08:27

Someone suggested Blaise (this is the spelling by the way! 😅) above which I think is a good shout. It's a genuine first name too, rather than a surname.

Blake sounds like an 80s sitcom dad

Zachary, shortened to Zach.

My image is ‘under review’, but is a photo of the conniving silver-haired Blake Carrington from Dynasty.
