Maud or Maude

Choosing this name for our daughter, but unsure which spelling is best.

I much prefer Maude, it has a girlier and less severe feel to it imo. It’s a pretty name 😌

I think I’d pick Maud. I always like the simpler version of a name. But both are nice!

Maud I would choose - simply so that people pronounce it correctly.

Personally like Maude better

Maud. Wasn’t the best friend in The Worst Witch called that? (I loved those classic kids books) and I think Maud was a well known diminutive of the Empress Matilda too, so that’s also a cool historical namesake (as well as one or two other Queen Maud’s).

The E seems unnecessary for Maud- imo this isn’t an “Anne with an E” situation where the Anne spelling is as well known or more popular than the simpler/original Ann spelling (Anne Boleyn, various other Queen Anne’s, Anne of Green Gables, Shakespeare’s wife Anne Hathaway etc etc). I think most people would assume the Maud spelling unless told otherwise.

Maud is ugly.
Maude is more feminine.
The sound of the name when spoken is harsh and doesn't sound nice in an English accent IMO.

Adding a ‘e’ just suggests you don’t like the inherent nature of the name. If you want something frilly and girlish I’d choose something else!

On paper I prefer Maude as looks prettier. Have you seen the movie Harold and Maude? This is the only time I have come across the name Maude so I associate it with the elderly lady from the movie (she was a nice lady!)

The E adds nothing

For a long time I preferred Maude but then one of my best friends had a Maud and now I infinitely prefer that. (Funny how a OO mentions the Worst Witch, I have an Enid and we always joke about that when we get them together.)

Maud is cooler, more confident. Maude feels like it's trying to hide a bit.
