Baby name Polly if my name is Holly

Is this a completely ridiculous idea? I really like the name but I’ve lost sight of whether this is downright silly

I love this name but my husband sadly vetoed it for our daughter.
It will not matter, you'll just be known as Polly's mum in baby groups and when she grows up you'll be mum, hardly anyone will be saying your names together. I wouldn't give it a passing thought if I met a Polly and a Holly.

SareBear87 · 30/01/2025 21:16

I think it's fine.
All the women in my family have names beginning with S and my poor nan has just given up. I get called every aunt and cousin before she gets to my name.

I do think it depends on who you socialise with though.

I know a Joanne with a son called Joe and a daughter called Anne.

No way!!!

I know a mum Kellie and her daughter Ellie. It seemed a bit funny when she was born, but don't even really notice now she is 9.

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 30/01/2025 21:27

No sorry. I love both names, but not together.

Holly & Ada
Holly & Flora
Holly & Rose
Holly & Gracie
Holly & Hermione
Holly & Mariella

okay thanks for all opinions!!!

I do like Poppy so maybe that is the better choice

I know a dad Olly who has a daughter called Molly.

And I know a Tam with a son Sam.

It’s funny, but I’ve got used to it.

Blusterylimp · 30/01/2025 22:14

I’d be more worried about her constantly being told to put the kettle on.

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 30/01/2025 22:25

I think it’s lovely! You get so many father and son with same names so why not Holly and Polly!
Polly is a gorgeous name.

So many Poppys though and so few Pollys. I should know, I have a Polly (and have also yet to meet a dog called Polly). Funnily enough we never considered calling her Pollyanna when she was born but we often use that as her nickname now. There's something to be said for having that, or similar, as an option.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/01/2025 22:44

Choose the name you love. I can’t remember ever saying to anyone “Hello my name is X and this is my daughter Y”. It just never happens, you become known as “Y’s mum” or by your own name in your life separate to your daughter.

It happens at baby and toddler groups, but that's about all.

Polly is an excellent name. Use it with pride.

So sorry OP but I laughed out loud.

Me too!

GiraffesAtThePark · 31/01/2025 02:46

Don’t live your life for baby and toddler groups - and in lots you just have the child’s name mentioned in the group - in my experience.

Also don’t choose a name by how well it goes with yours. A pp has given suggestions paired with your name. I think it’s fine to think that way with siblings and especially twins as they’ll be commonly paired together.

I do think the issue of confusion could come up if your husband is calling for one of you. Other siblings will obviously call you mum.

Swearwolf · 31/01/2025 06:05

I do think people will constantly mix up who is who, particularly in the baby/toddler group stage. It happened to me! My name doesn't rhyme with my daughter but both start with the same letter and that was enough for some people.

Beachs · 31/01/2025 06:36

I like polly but I think poppy might be better but trust me it is in no way as bad as my friends Mae who had the unfortunate surname of Day, and her sister was Summer 😱

What about Peggy?
Or Primrose/Prim?

I love the name Polly but “Holly and Polly” sounds a bit much. Could it be used as a middle name? x

BuntyBeaufort · 31/01/2025 12:42

Polly is lovely.
If you like it go for it.

Everyone else can stfu.

Vitriolinsanity · 31/01/2025 19:28

One of my favourite children ever is a Polly.

Mochudubh · 31/01/2025 19:55

For some reason "Polly" makes me think of a Georgian era slattern, but that's probably just me.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 31/01/2025 19:56

Love Polly

theduchessofspork · 31/01/2025 20:12

Well you couldn’t for siblings, but I think you just about could for mother and daughter

In case she hates it later, I’d probably call her some version of Mary (Polly is traditionally a pet form of Mary) as a full name - like Marianne or something - and use Polly as a shortform

TwigletsAndRadishes · 31/01/2025 20:23

Well I wouldn't do it. I think it will drive you potty constantly thinking people are calling you when they are actually calling her, and vice versa.

UninterestingFirstPost · 31/01/2025 20:27

Posy?

muddyford · 31/01/2025 20:46

A dog trainer friend had a class where there were puppies called Dolly, Folly, Holly, Molly and Polly. Pick another!

Mangoesintoapub · 31/01/2025 20:48

Do it if you love the name. It will give people who meet you both together a smile but tbh that’s only a very short time- for most of her life it will be irrelevant.
