Boys name dilemma

Bumpitupagain · 29/01/2025 21:48

Please help me decide before the due date (4th Feb!). I keep flipflopping.

Choices are

Alexander
Jonah
Caleb
Dylan

DH says he likes them all. Last name is pretty standard so I think it will go with anything - 3 syllables.

I also like Cassian but that might be a bit leftfield and DH not so keen (not an outright no though which given the slog to get the shortlist is a minor miracle)

I don't think you need to know before you've met him. I would just focus on halving the list and that takes the pressure off
Before having ds we had 3 boys names for months. Narrowed it down to two very close to the due date and as soon as he arrived me and DP looked at each other and just knew which one was right for him

Congratulations! Xx

Alexander - this will undoubtedly be shortened to Alex!
Jonah - I actually like this
Caleb - not a fan!
Dylan - really like this

I agree with the above poster that you should narrow it down to 2. I don't think babies "look like" a certain name when they are born but narrowing it down to 2 might help you choose! Names are personal preference though, you are going to get posters who hate all your choices, who love all your choices and everything in between. Once you and your other half love it, that's all that matters. You are the ones going to be saying it for the rest of your lives. Congrats and good luck

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/01/2025 22:00

I really like your shortlist! My order would be

  1. Dylan - cool and simple, not too trendy or overused / dated. Love it.
  2. Alexander - timeless classic, safe choice
  3. Jonah - nice traditional name, but with a modern sound (lots of names like Noah etc popular with similar vibes - Jonah is less overused)
  4. Caleb - good solid choice too, not overly commonly used.
Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 29/01/2025 22:01

Caleb or Jonah

Other 2 aren't as exciting!

SkaneTos · 29/01/2025 22:04

Those are all lovely names.

I agree with one of the previous posters, you can choose a name from the list when you meet your son.

I like Alexander the best, but I'd either keep it as Alexander or go with Xander as a nick name over Alex.

I'd echo keeping a shortlist and then waiting until you meet him.

MissyB1 · 29/01/2025 22:06

Jonah is my standout favourite from your list, much nicer than the others.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 29/01/2025 22:07

Alexander every time!

Maxorias · 29/01/2025 22:44

I love Alexander - my DC3 may well have been Alexander had she been a boy !

I also like Caleb. It's probably a bit more uncommon, dunno if that makes a difference to you.

Just throwing this out there as it's not on your list but Maximilian/Max is the same vibe as Alexander. One of mine is a Max.

HugoYorway · 29/01/2025 23:00

Alexander - this will undoubtedly be shortened to Alex!
Jonah - bad luck
Caleb - like the Welsh pronunciation better
Dylan - don't like

Bumpitupagain · 30/01/2025 00:00

Thanks everyone! I like the idea of shortening down to 2 names, and then see what he looks like when he's here. I just heard tonight about someone who didn't name their dc for 2 weeks because they couldn't decide so that makes me feel better about not having to rush!

I think Alexander is the front runner for me at the moment

Yes I love Max! Sadly, that's why I used it for the dog 6 years ago... Should have thought ahead

Alexander is my favourite from those by far :)

Pigsinblankets13 · 30/01/2025 06:37

I like all but Alexander - it's more boring and dull in comparison to your other choices!

EzWin2 · 30/01/2025 09:39

Jonah and Dylan are both lovely. I think you need to narrow it down to two and wait until you meet him.

I was deciding between George and Ezra for my son and when he was born I instantly knew he was an Ezra. He suits his name perfectly!

Mumofgirls2017 · 30/01/2025 11:02

Alexander, it’s great, classic and won’t date badly

i love Cassian too shame your Oh isn’t that keen….

shoopshoopdedoo · 30/01/2025 11:07

Alexander is my stand out favourite. All the others are nice enough, too. But Alexander is 👌. I don’t like Cassian at all!

Plaided · 30/01/2025 11:18

I would wait until the baby is here. We narrowed the list down, in my head they were definitely going to be called one name. When they arrived, it just didn’t seem to suit them! The other name suited them perfectly!

LoudPlumDog · 30/01/2025 15:02

I love Jonah, Caleb and Alexander in that order.

Dylan is a no from me.

bluebunnys · 30/01/2025 15:09

The problem with Alexander is that it will inevitably be shortened to Alex - I know soo many Alexes, both male and female that I find Alex a little dull.

My choices would be Caleb or Cassian. Both great underused classics. More memorable than Alex!

It doesn’t necessarily need to be Alex. Could just go by Alexander or by Xander.

There are other potential nicknames - Lex, Alec, Sandy, Xandy, Xan although in my opinion the full name Alexander is the nicest, quickly followed by Xander

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 30/01/2025 16:44

I like Alexander best.

bluebunnys · 30/01/2025 17:54

Of course it doesn't have to, but Alex is the most intuitive and likely short form

Sk1sk0 · 30/01/2025 19:07

Jonah and Alexander are the best imo
