How to pronounce Laken?

Newbie5652 · 27/01/2025 20:00

Just heard our friends have named their new son Laken. How would you pronounce that? We will ask when we see them, this was a social media announcement, but I'm just curious in the meantime.

Lah-ken like lamp?

Or Lay-ken like lake?

Or something else?

One parent is English, one American, if nationalities make a difference.

Just ask them.

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/01/2025 20:03

Could be either of those, and no idea which so I would ask them. Don’t particularly like it either way tbh.

Newbie5652 · 27/01/2025 20:04

I will ask them when I see them but I just wanted to reply to their message with congratulations and not questions. He's only a few hours old.

Unless I was told otherwise I'd assume it was like 'taken' but with an L.

KnickerlessParsons · 27/01/2025 20:04

Laken like Taken

Plaided · 27/01/2025 20:08

Just say congratulations for now, you don’t need the pronunciation for a text. Then when you speak to them just ask them or wait for them to speak it. How lovely!!

outside1inside · 27/01/2025 20:10

I read it as lacken but it's probably layken

Chersfrozenface · 27/01/2025 20:16

According to all the sources I've found on the web, lay-kun.

Newbie5652 · 27/01/2025 20:17

I'm guessing Lay-ken too.

I've never heard the name before. I cant decide if I like it or not, but they do so that's all that matters

My cousin has a Laken and pronounces it Lay-ken

user1492757084 · 28/01/2025 03:06

I would say Laken because it's associated with coming from near a Lake. Lake is pronounced Layk, so Layken.

oakleaffy · 28/01/2025 03:10

Like Kraken.
Why do parents choose such ugly names for their kids.

Lurkingandlearning · 28/01/2025 05:16

I was hoping it would have been lar kun. Unlikely but I like it

AdelaideAtHome · 28/01/2025 05:40

I know one, pronounced lay-ken (like 'taken' as per PP)

Skooled · 28/01/2025 05:51

If you have primary aged children you will look at the name and immediately be like 'its a split diagraph' so pronounced laken rhymes with taken...it's one of the things I have learnt from my children's primary years and now can't get out of my head.

bluebunnys · 28/01/2025 13:19

I'd say La-ken

I wouldn't add the AY into it. More like Kraken.

The american airbase is Laken heath - Lake-en
