For Calliope( Cal-eye-oh-pee, just incase anyone doesn't know...greek muse) It will probably be shortened to Callie for daily use.
DD expecting baby any day. Boys name sorted. But drawing a blank if baby is a girl so thought I'd ask here for ideas to pass along :)

I quite like the idea of a E name in the middle- Elspeth, Elouise, Elliana...

I think she should look for a family name and not worry too much about 'flow' or fashion.

Maxorias · 24/01/2025 02:10

Personally I used names that I liked for middle names but that I wouldn't/couldn't use as a first name for whatever reason.

Is there a name she wishes she could use but is just a little bit too out there, or too common, or she loves but not quite as much as Calliope ?

What about fictional or historical characters ?

Is there any meaning she likes that could be expressed in a middle name ? (for instance, star names, virtue names...)

I like the name Calliope. Personally I would choose a middle name that's one syllable with a consonant at the start like Jane, June, Grace, Rae, Mae.

Pick a 1 syllable name that has links to your family or means something to you or is a name you like. If you can't think of a name, don't give a middle name and just use the first. Middle names are rarely used anyways. Don't sweat it.

I'd go for a one syllable name with a sing songy 4 syllable name like Calliope.
I'd avoid anything beginning with the letter E as they'll just run into each other (ee-e)

Unlike other mumsnetters I don't think the middle name has to honour anyone or be a family name, nor am I in the 'it doesn't matter if it doesn't flow, it'll never be used' camp.
It absolutely should flow and the main thing is that it's a name you like.

Calliope Wren
Calliope Beth
Calliope May
Calliope Joy
Calliope Ruth
Calliope Grace
Calliope Fern

I'd stay away from Jane/Jade/June/Jean as it might be too close to 'Calamity Jane'

Thank you... lots of lovely ideas!
Family names aren't vital (frankly as both the other Grandparent and myself have late 60's names we'd rather she didn't 😅) but we did just lose a much loved grandparent called Ruth, whose other name was also lovely.
If it is a boy he will have a family name that is unusual but not weird, and goes back 4 generations!
