Is it common knowledge that Jesse is the boy spelling?

My baby is Jesse, very happy with his name BUT I assumed everyone knew that Jesse is the boy spelling and Jessie (and others like Jesy) are girl spellings. We had a trip up the hospital the other day (he's now fine), he was in a white babygrow and from nurses/doctors who had seen his notes called him "she" or "they". Is it not something that people generally know?? I'm wondering if this is something he'll be correcting people on his whole life!

Jesse Draper
Jesse Money
Jesse Jane

Are/were all female Jesses

Shinyandnew1 · 23/01/2025 13:26

As a teacher, I never assume! I have taught boy Jessie and girl Jesse.

Moreteaandchocolate · 23/01/2025 13:26

I know because I know a boy called Jesse. Before that I probably would have double checked if it was a boy or girl, even though I was aware of Jesse James.

cheesegromit13 · 23/01/2025 13:27

I have a girl Jessie, and she has a boy Jesse (and a Woody) in her class.

if I came across a Jesse I'd assume a boy but I wouldn't be 100% certain.

I've met a male Jessie.

Mother adamant that was how she wanted it spelled.

In Scotland Jessie = insult for effeminate man. Babies father was Scottish so no idea what went on.

I thought the insult was 'Big Jesse' ?

Inkypot · 23/01/2025 14:37

@bluebunnys the insult works with or without 'big' in front of it. But I still like the name.

okydokethen · 23/01/2025 20:38

Jesse is a great name and definitely the spelling for a boy.

Marcipix · 25/01/2025 17:18

I know a male Jessie (who is hideously teased by his peers) so it’s not an absolute rule. I would assume Jesse is a boy tho.

Emanwenym · 25/01/2025 17:29

he now common use of Aubrey and James as girls names.
They're not common, and both are pretty awful as girl's names

I know males and female Lee/Leighs and a male Lea (lee)

You can't assume people will know that Jesse is male from the spelling.
A relative of mine always writes Louise as Louis.

Leslie was used for girls too (Ash, Caron)

Jessie = insult for effeminate man. This

BBQPete · 25/01/2025 18:15

If you were clearly a boy, and told me your name was Jesse, that is how I would spell it, (after checking with you) however, I've spent many decades working with dc and believe me, the public at large don't follow any rule book with regards to spelling names, so hospital staff wouldn't assume anything from a spelling.

If they heard you say the name, then I would assume 'girl', as, although I've seen the name Jesse written down, I've only ever met female Jess and Jessica's who are sometime called 'Jessy', even if that isn't the name on the form.

yeesh · 25/01/2025 18:18

I would think it’s a girl

clarrylove · 25/01/2025 23:00

Yes, I would know. Just like Joe is a boy and Jo is a girl.

theduchessofspork · 26/01/2025 16:31

Yes.

It’s a great name. Jessie is just more popular and they didn’t read it properly.

Worry not

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 27/01/2025 00:40

I would know, but then I’m interested in names and so I notice things like certain names usually being spelled differently for boys and girls. I wouldn’t expect everyone to know this though. Some people would just spell it however they’ve seen it spelled before and not think about whether it’s masculine or feminine.

TappyGilmore · 27/01/2025 00:46

I would probably assume Jesse is a boy because it is the male way of spelling it traditionally, but I do know a female Jesse. She’s actually Jessica but chooses to go by Jesse, and you wouldn’t necessarily know that her name is Jessica unless she chose to tell you.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/01/2025 01:00

I had always thought it was Jesse for a boy, but have met quite a few girls whose parents had named them Jesse. More than I have actually met males called Jesse. If they've also had that experience, then I can understand the confusion.

HoppityBun · 27/01/2025 01:10

Jesse was the father of King David in the bible. People would have known that years ago because they were sent to Sunday school. Loads of famous men called Jesse. Do people still know about Jesse James?

LineofTedLasso · 27/01/2025 01:41

Totally a boy spelling. Jesse Pinkman for example

bluebunnys · 27/01/2025 08:41

Jesse is so similar to Jessie and also a common nickname for Jessica that many people assume girl

Tonkall · 27/01/2025 09:00

I would know that Jesse is the boy name spelling.

I would associate the name Jesse more with the US than with the UK, though. I've never met a male Jesse in the UK (obviously some people have, but I haven't), and honestly the sound of it is the sound of a girl's name to me. I am totally thinking Jessie every time I hear it, and I suspect an awful lot of other people are too. Maybe that's what happened at the hospital.

Becoming increasingly difficult to know, but you could say 'boy, like Jesse James'! Of course that's assuming they know the infamous cowboy.
