Is it common knowledge that Jesse is the boy spelling?

My baby is Jesse, very happy with his name BUT I assumed everyone knew that Jesse is the boy spelling and Jessie (and others like Jesy) are girl spellings. We had a trip up the hospital the other day (he's now fine), he was in a white babygrow and from nurses/doctors who had seen his notes called him "she" or "they". Is it not something that people generally know?? I'm wondering if this is something he'll be correcting people on his whole life!

Yeah if someone was writing something to me, and said Jesse, I would think 'boy.' And if it was Jessie I would think 'girl.' Not everyone will know though.

The nurses may have seen the notes, but still, some people may not know 'Jesse' is a boy. Like with Leslie and Lesley. (Leslie is male, Lesley is female.) Not everyone knows that.

WettyBite · 23/01/2025 10:31

Definitely Jesse for a boy.

Inkypot · 23/01/2025 10:35

I would know Jesse is the boy variant of the name (lovely name by the way!) but there will be parents out there using that spelling for girls I'm sure. You only have to look at how many use Beau for girls (definitely a boy name) or people who add an x 'Beaux'. A different name I know but just highlighting people are random in their spellings nowadays. Hope your son is doing ok 🥰

Octavia64 · 23/01/2025 10:48

I didn't know this

Carsarelife · 23/01/2025 10:53

I would know that for sure. But then I know someone that called their Son Leigh and to me that's the girls spelling and the boys spelling is Lee. Same as Toni, Tony etc

Rewindpresse · 23/01/2025 10:55

Yes! I don’t have one but I think it’s a fantastic name

Thebellofstclements · 23/01/2025 11:00

I love the name but only know it from the Bible (Jesse removed a thorn from a lion's paw, I think) and Home & Away (chap with awful hair had a story line where he was attacked and his hair cut off after which he looked ten trillion times better).
Lots of people are going to think it's a girl's name.

CorduroySituation · 23/01/2025 11:04

With so many odd, different and yoonik spellings these days, no one will want to assume the sex of a baby by the name only.

My friend is a primary school teacher and says it's always the other way round (boy/girl) from what you expect!

I think of Jesse James the American cowboy when I hear it.

WhereAreWeNow · 23/01/2025 11:04

Yes I knew that. But I think people are probably more familiar with Jessie as a girl's name than Jesse as a boy's name so I suspect a lot of people will just assume it's a girl's name without giving too much thought to the spelling. You only have to watch the Traitors round table to see how many people are really abysmal at spelling names 🤣

BeaTwix · 23/01/2025 11:05

I've met a male Jessie.

Mother adamant that was how she wanted it spelled.

In Scotland Jessie = insult for effeminate man. Babies father was Scottish so no idea what went on.

Lovelysummerdays · 23/01/2025 11:08

I don’t think I’ve ever seen it spelt another way. I’d think boy too ala Jesse James.

SuperMaybe · 23/01/2025 11:16

I didn't know as a thing but if I saw Jesse I would guess it was for a boy.

Whydoeseveryonewanttoargue · 23/01/2025 11:19

No not necessarily. I have a good friend in her 40’s who spells her name Jesse.

VenusClapTrap · 23/01/2025 12:14

I would assume male. However, people are playing fast and loose with spellings as well as gender norms for names these days, so it wouldn’t be a safe assumption. E.g. the now common use of Aubrey and James as girls names.

I know two female Leslie’s! Both in their 50’s, not sure that makes a difference

anyway, I know Jesse is a boy but I guess others might not

BarbaraHoward · 23/01/2025 12:19

I know, BUT I suspect there's more Jessies/Jessicas out there than Jesses, and also know that parents of girls are increasingly using traditionally male names and spellings so I don't blame people for guessing with caution.

FlowersOfSulphur · 23/01/2025 12:24

If I seen Jesse written down, I expect it to be a boy. However, if I hear the name spoken, I automatically hear it as "Jessie" and expect a girl. I think it's because there are lots of Jessies about, but Jesse is still quite unusual in this country.

Perhaps it was a verbal handover, something like, "and in cot 4 we have Jesse, aged six months, who is in with a rash" and they all heard that as "Jessie"?

Edited to add, sorry - I now see that the medical personnel had seen it written down! In that case, I'm surprised they didn't know...perhaps they just glanced at the name. But in generally speaking, I think most people would know.

Bumbers · 23/01/2025 12:24

I would probably guess girl as a version of Jessica.

RitaFromTheRanch · 23/01/2025 12:26

I know a female Jesse.

I do think it's heard as a girl's name if said aloud but usually if I saw Jesse I'd think boy.

Firsttimebabymummy · 23/01/2025 12:26

I would assume boy. Love the name too.

MollyButton · 23/01/2025 12:27

Jesse is also a Scottish girls name.

InTheRainOnATrain · 23/01/2025 12:28

I am aware that traditionally it’s the boy’s spelling but then there are a lot of none traditional spellings around these days so I wouldn’t presume either boy or girl and would ask!

crystallina · 23/01/2025 12:58

Yes, because of Jesse Spencer.

bluebunnys · 23/01/2025 13:13

I only know girls called Jessica, Jessie, Jesse, Jess

SquigglePigs · 23/01/2025 13:16

I did know that that is generally the male version and Jessie is the female. Like Lesley/Leslie, Leigh/Lee, Andi/Andy.

Unfortunately people don't always go with those conventions (even more so in recent years) so I'd always want to confirm.

For example, I know two female Lee's (both 30-40 yrs old at a guess).
