Hi,

My gorgeous boy is now 3 weeks old. We are desperate to give him a name but just can't decide. Our surname is Rose-Allen and his older brother is Otto. Since he's been born we've called him Aubrey, Alwyn, Aster and now we're down to Rupert or Jasper. We want his name to be as 'cool' as his brother's and convey a fun, cheeky, adventurous child. Please help!

I think Jasper fits nicely with Otto and with your surname, Rupert does too but to me Jasper conveys more of what you're wanting. I also like Rowan or Alban?

I really like Alwyn from your list, but I think Jasper goes better with your older boy, your surname and your criteria.

Jasper fits perfectly

Notgivenuphope · 15/01/2025 16:05

Jasper

VenusClapTrap · 15/01/2025 16:56

I love Aubrey

bluebunnys · 15/01/2025 16:59

Aubrey is a great name and goes well with older brother Otto.

I don't like Jasper as it often gets shortened to Jas or Jazzy.

Jasper is perfect!

Jasper is a great name, also like Alban as suggested above. Other names - Felix, Rex, Ezra, Zeke, Bram, Cassius. Also like Austin "Ozzy"

BBQPete · 15/01/2025 17:45

From those you've mentioned, I agree with many others that Jasper seems to fit.

As an alternative, but in the same vein, what about Luca ?

Emanwenym · 15/01/2025 17:49

Another vote for Jasper

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/01/2025 17:53

Jago or Rufus or Jethro/Jet.

Probably Jasper out of Jasper or Rupert.

ASuitableName · 15/01/2025 17:54

Jasper is a great name

Do you like Magnus or Conrad ?

user2848502016 · 15/01/2025 19:09

I'd go for Rupert from your list , it goes nicely with Otto too.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/01/2025 19:09

Agree with others that of your list Jasper seems closest in style (quirky, fun, slightly bohemian or hipster) to Otto.

Even though it’s popular now, Rupert still has fairly U vibes to me, as does elegant but old-fashioned Aubrey (which would probably get mistaken as girls Audrey these days) and the couple of Aster’s I’ve met have been female (flower names tend to be considered feminine). Alwyn sounds quite Welsh compared to very Germanic Otto, so seems a slightly odd pairing to me if it matters.

Felix, Rufus, Maxim/Magnus, Edmund/Edgar, Lucian are other names I’d consider similar in style to Otto or Jasper for some reason.

Mumofgirls2017 · 15/01/2025 19:10

Both lovely I’d go Jasper

Scutterbug · 15/01/2025 19:11

I also think Jasper but also like Jago as suggested above.

villamariavintrapp · 15/01/2025 19:30

Tricky surname.. I think Rose is going to sound more like part of the first name than the surname of it's paired with a more feminine sounding name. I think Aubrey Rose, Alwyn Rose and Aster Rose will be mistaken for girls. Jasper is good and works well.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 15/01/2025 19:32

Jasper goes really well with Otto.

SushiWarrior · 15/01/2025 19:33

Aubrey sounds fab with your surname, and fits so nicely with a brother called Otto.

they remind me of cool jazz names for some reason. Smooth and cool

shoopshoopdedoo · 15/01/2025 20:24

Congratulations!

Of your list, I’d pick Rupert. Also think something like Asa is a similar vibe and works well with Otto.

Everyone on MN is loving Jasper at the moment - I feel like it’s on these threads every day! Personally, I really strongly dislike it, but I can see I’m the odd one out!

Emanwenym · 16/01/2025 09:02

I don't love it, @shoopshoopdedoo , but I think it's the best on the list. I don't have anything against it and it goes well with Otto, but think it's a name that might suit a puppy.

Aster woud be a girl and Alwyn and Aubrey seem like grandad names not in a good way.

Asa is a great suggestion.

I prefer Rupert from your list.
Rupert and Jasper are certainly the two most handsome names you have been trying.
Others..
Angus
Ivor
Keith

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/01/2025 10:14

Ooh! Asa would be a fab choice- a great sounding name (with the possible fun nn Ace) and a cool palindrome like Otto. There’s so few boys palindrome names, I think if I’d already chosen Otto, I wouldn’t be able to resist Asa too.

Emanwenym · 16/01/2025 20:14

KEITH?! 😆

Edited

Thank you!

Ivor is one we are now seriously considering. I felt that Otto and Jasper sounded too much like pets and my husband is Robert and thinks Rupert is too similar and too weak (although it's still my favourite name!)
