(TITLE SHOULD READ NORRIE/NORREY)

We (partner and I) recently met a man called Norrie/Norrey. I really like it! Is it a Scottish name? We were visiting Glasgow so I did wonder. Feel like it goes with the Archie/Archibald kinda vibe. You know, in a Norrie/Norbert/Norman sort of way? I know there’s the association with Nori but there’s plenty of other food associated names out there!

Not pregnant, it’s just rare that I come across a boys/man’s name I’ve not heard of and wondered if anyone else had come across it!

There was a TV with a teenage character called Norrie but it was a shortening of something and she was a girl.
I can't remember what it was short for.... I will Google.

Goscat · 12/01/2025 22:29

I'm from Glasgow and never heard it! Potentially his nickname? Maybe a norman

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/01/2025 22:31

I know a Norrie who is from Glasgow and he's 72. Met others in the past too.

MummytoE · 12/01/2025 22:32

Probably one of the worst I've heard

Needmorelego · 12/01/2025 22:32

@Namesheardinthewild the girl Norrie from TV was actually Eleanor !
(It was the programme Under the Dome).

fashionqueen0123 · 12/01/2025 22:33

Thank god you don’t want to call your child Borrow 🤣

Namesheardinthewild · 12/01/2025 22:35

@Needmorelego see I would have never thought of Norrie as a nickname for Eleanor either!

Norris.

CamelsForChristmas · 12/01/2025 22:36

I've heard it as a shortening for Noreen.

Justnippinginthegaragelove · 12/01/2025 22:36

The only Norrie I've ever heard of is the character on hey duggee

MrsBungle · 12/01/2025 22:37

Norrie is short for Norman in Scotland. I know a few - called Norrie or Nod.

whydoihavetowork · 12/01/2025 22:37

I know a Narrie (short for Narinder) could it be that with the accent?

Needmorelego · 12/01/2025 22:37

@Namesheardinthewild yes.... I thought that too 😂

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 12/01/2025 22:38

The mouse in Hey duggee (children’s tv show) is called Norrie she is a girl. Thats the only time I’ve heard of the name.

Needmorelego · 12/01/2025 22:38

Google tells me it is indeed short for Norman in Scotland.

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/01/2025 22:40

My partner has a friend Norrie, short for Norman. We are in Scotland. He’s a bloke in his 60s.

Viviennemary · 12/01/2025 22:42

Both are totally dire. Among the worst I've heard on here. I've heard of Norrie short for Noreen

soontobeamama · 12/01/2025 22:46

Norrie can be a nickname for Norman in Scotland.

I've also heard of an Italian name Onorio (male name meaning honour) which is shortened to Norie.

TheYeaSayer · 12/01/2025 22:58

Yes, I had a Great uncle Norrie, who was a Scottish Norman!
I always thought the name sounded as lovely and kind as he was.

Bienemaias · 12/01/2025 23:00

Short for Noreen or Norbert

(Both are awful imo)

DeathStarCanteenGal · 12/01/2025 23:47

I had a boss who was Norrie - a really good bloke. It was a shortening of Norman

DeathStarCanteenGal · 12/01/2025 23:47

And yes, I'm in Scotland
