Zelma is DH's grandmother, Ines his great. I really like the associations, that's important to me.

Am I being cruel to a little girl for doing this though? Reaction seems to be, if she's gorgeous it's going to be fine, but teasing is highly likely.

I know I shouldn't have asked but - my mother HATES it. DH still needs to be brought round. But all the other names we like seem to be so random, I keep coming back to this.

Do you like it, Harriet? It doesn't matter if your mum doesn't.

For example, if you like the associations but not the names, you could choose other names beginning with the same letter? That's what lots of Jewish people do when honouring their dead relatives by using their names or derivatives of.

It's fine. But your dh has to agree! Maybe your mother is less happy because both names come from your dh's side of the family rather then hers?

berolina · 03/05/2008 11:59

It's a stunning name. Go for it (= persuade dh to).

HarrietTheSpy · 03/05/2008 11:59

I would say I'm 80% confident about it. But I have to say this late into my last pregnancy I had really strange things on the list and don't really trust myself at this point.

Belgo - all of DD's names come from her side of the family. it's still poss though.

In that case, don't worry about what your mother thinks.

I don't think it's a name that will particularly cause bullying - but bullies will always find a cause for bullying anyway.

Piffle · 03/05/2008 12:02

love it
though would be tempted to go with salma or Selma but that's just being pickymsounds gorgeous

FranSanDisco · 03/05/2008 12:03

Ines is lovely but don't like Zelma, sorry.

HarrietTheSpy · 03/05/2008 12:04

Piffle -it's funny you say Selma, because it was a variation I had considered. It's a bit softer. This is a possibility.

Z names are ace, I much prefer Zelma

moyasmum · 03/05/2008 12:18

like ines, not zelma so much (bit like the comady dragon mother/auntie in 1950's us films

mazzystar · 03/05/2008 12:21

If it were my daughter I might not have both names - but I like them both, especially if you soften the Z to Selma
