How would you rank these three names?

I apparently love French baby names as the top three for boys at the moment are exactly the style my husband and I like. Keen to hear how people personally rank the top three, they are:

Leo, Gabriel, Raphael.

No British kid wants to be called Raphael or Gabriel.

They are all very popular names in the UK at present.

Name fashions do change you know - you’d be hard pressed to find a baby called John, Peter, Paul or Mark right now.

WalterdelaMare · 31/12/2024 18:22

Gabriel was on my list. Raphael is lovely too. Don’t like Leo.

All beautiful names. Classic and work well internationally.

Gabriel
Raphael
Leo

I've only ever met intelligent, successful and gorgeous Gabriels.

My DS is Gabriel so thank you for that. I think he's a bit special (obviously 😉.)

I like all of those names, but do prefer the Spanish spelling of Rafael. Rafe is a cool nn too I think.

Seacatt · 31/12/2024 18:24

I love these names!

Gabriel is my favourite by a long way, then
Raphael (Rafe is a great shortening of the name).
Leo

SnapdragonToadflax · 31/12/2024 18:26

Leo is my favourite and was on our list 6 years ago, but it is very popular.

Rafael because I like the nickname Rafa. Not keen on Raffy.

Gabriel I don't like at all.

AnarchismUK · 31/12/2024 18:27

Out of the three (which don't make me think French), I only like Leo. I called my dog Leo, I wouldn't have chosen it for DSs.

ThatMauveRaven · 31/12/2024 22:35
  1. Raphael (also agree with PP - Rafael is nicer)
  2. Leo
  3. Gabriel
PumpkinScarf · 31/12/2024 22:41

Turtley awesome list!

In all seriousness they are all lovely names and would fit right in with current naming trends for little ones. I like Raphael best but all nice names. Leo is nice but very popular near me. See which flows best with your surname.

BelleSauvage9 · 31/12/2024 22:42

My ds is Leo, I think it's a really lovely name but probably wouldn't have chosen it myself due to its popularity, but a friend of dp and my db was Leo so was always a front runner for dp and I liked it enough to be happy to name ds as such. Funnily enough my dn is called raff (rafferty not Raphael though) so like that too! Also love Gabriel.

I think if ranking myself I'd say
Gabriel
Leo
Raphael

My order of preference..
Leo
Leonard
Raphael - Raph
Leopold
Gabriel - but Gabrielle is a favourite girls name.

Do you like Michael, Roger or John?

givemeasnowmananyday · 01/01/2025 03:33

🤣🤣 OP is naming a baby, not a 60 year old man!

FedUpWithXmasNow · 01/01/2025 06:18

I prefer:

Louis
Sylvan
Xavier
Elias

garlictwist · 01/01/2025 06:50

In French Gabriel is pronounced Gabrielle rather than Gay-brielle.

wandawaves · 01/01/2025 07:45

Leo, Raphael, Gabriel.

I actually think Gabriel is such a beautiful sounding name, but I can't stand Gabe, and wouldn't want anyone to tease him and call him "Gay".

rainingsnoring · 01/01/2025 13:01

noidea69 · 31/12/2024 13:50

No British kid wants to be called Raphael or Gabriel.

What a strange thing to say.
There are plenty of British children with these names. I know a few and none have ever been teased because of their names.
Children aren't subject to bullying purely on the basis of a name and the names used in the UK now are so much more varied than they used to be that the kids barely notice more unusual/ foreign names now.

rainingsnoring · 01/01/2025 13:02

I think they are all great names @Eloise34, although I wouldn't think of them as French.

MySweetGeorgina · 01/01/2025 18:06

Raphael is very international, popular across large parts of the world (Latin America, France, Poland and other countries, it’s an Old Testament name from the book of Tobit) and I know one here who’s known as Raf mostly (late teens), not been bullied at school for his name btw 😁

I also like Leo. And equally (but you did not mention this one: Mateo)

Gabriel is fine too. But I know too many already 😁

MySweetGeorgina · 01/01/2025 18:07

Also there is a Carla Bruni song called Raphael

def very French 😁

hyperkid · 01/01/2025 18:56

KnickerlessParsons · 31/12/2024 16:28

I don't think any of those are particularly French

If you're going to use Raphaël, use the dieresis. I like Gabriel the best though.

Would warn against using ë if OP is in the UK. It is not an official letter here and would cause issues with passport applications, etc.

ladygindiva · 01/01/2025 19:53

Raphael : gorgeous
Gabriel: very nice
Leo: also very nice but very popular ( if that matters)

I like them all but love Raphael.

ladygindiva · 01/01/2025 19:54

noidea69 · 31/12/2024 13:50

No British kid wants to be called Raphael or Gabriel.

I have a neighbour with a Gabriel and my kids have a Raphael in their class. Both seem happy with their names and noone has made an issue of it.

UrsulaBelle · 01/01/2025 22:14

Raphael, Leo and Gabriel. I just don’t like the NN Gabe.

Aglassaday · 01/01/2025 22:21

Raphael is my favourite! Would nickname him Raffy or Rafa
I love Leo too!
Gabriel I’m not so keen on but that’s just me!
