Boy names suggestions

I'm 28 weeks with a surprise, and we're struggling to settle on a boys name. We're looking for something which isn't too popular, but is also familiar. Our current shortlist is this, but open to a lot of suggestions.

Benedict
Felix
Hector
Orlando
Patrick
Robin

Patrick is my favourite
Orlando is my least favourite

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/12/2024 20:49

I love Orlando - such interesting literary links and cool diminutive options (Orry/Lando) . But I wasn’t brave enough personally 🤣 If you live somewhere or socialise in circles where it wouldn’t stand out as much, then I say go for it!

Benedict also stands out as braver to me (because of the “dict” part) - but is almost as lovely as Orlando, and at least has the popular nn Ben if he doesn’t want to stand out.

Felix, Robin and Patrick all feel a bit dull in comparison to me but I don’t dislike them.

ETA: Missed Hector, as not quite as keen on the sound compared to your other choices. Other ideas: Ivo, Jago, Heath, Corin, Laurence, Maximilian.

BootballJoy · 29/12/2024 22:28

Felix, Patrick and Robin are all brilliant names. It's a great list.

Maybe:
Tristan
Edmund
Caspar
Otto

Aidan
Nathan shortened to Nate
Howard
Kieran
Mark

wafflesmgee · 29/12/2024 22:32

Of your list I like Patrick best, rare nowadays.
I least like Orlando as it's a place name and Robin as its an animal name. I prefer people to have human names.

TizerorFizz · 29/12/2024 22:39

The only one I’m not sure about is Orlando. Obviously older than “Orlando” in the USA but it will get associated with it. An alternative would be Lando. As in Lando Norris. @horchatatresleches Use 3 of them.

Mumofgirls2017 · 29/12/2024 22:43

Love Orlando and Patrick!

Nice list! I like Patrick and Robin best (and Robin was a human name long before it was first used as a friendly nickname for the Redbreast bird).

I know a lovely Benedict. It’s a name rarely used in the US because it is associated with the (18th century) treasonous acts of Benedict Arnold.

How about Sebastian?

Alliscalmallisnotbright · 30/12/2024 01:45

Lovely names, really classic ( not personally keen on Orlando)
I like a strong classic name which isn’t necessarily currently on trend but you’ll know lots of adults with the name :
John
David
Brian
Joseph
Fergus
Ronan (although I know 2 small Ronans)
Edward/Eddie

hereismydog · 30/12/2024 01:47

Victor was second on my list for DS Smile lovely, strong name!

Alliscalmallisnotbright · 30/12/2024 01:47

I’ve just seen Raymond and Emmett on a list there too, also lovely .

theduchessofspork · 30/12/2024 02:44

I love Patrick - v underused right now

I like Robert nn Robbie but prefer Robin for a girl
Like Benedict, but Ben is a bit overdone

Not mad about the rest

Laurence
Rufus
Alistair
Xavier
might be others - I also like PP suggestion of Angus

Sunnyflow · 30/12/2024 17:14

I like Robin

Or how about

Reuben
Quentin
Sebastian

horchatatresleches · 30/12/2024 20:09

Thanks everyone! Lots I liked and DH didn't and a few my very fussy DH liked but I didn't. I also have some names which I really like but for some reason don't feel right for my baby. We've added Cillian and Tristan to the list, which might sounds like not a lot given all the names, but given how few names we've agreed on together it feels huge!

I love Joseph for a boy, I also like Liam but there's both in my family so won't be able to use either.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/12/2024 06:08

I love Patrick and Robin but I’d say now it’s definitely more for a girl now. I quite like the quirky and retro vibe of Hector but not so much the sound.

to add to you list

Malachi
Wilbur
Cedric
Edgar
Richard
Coleby
Jasper
Nicholas
Kevin
Vincent
Conrad
Winston
Edwin
Cooper
Derry
Kieran
Gavin
Casper
Lucian
Aiden
