Help us decide on the spelling! It took long enough to choose her name but we now have options on the spelling 😫 - I didn’t expect this bit to be so hard😅

Please help 😂

I love the name and it should be Mirrin.

KittenBiscuit · 27/12/2024 17:22

Please don't go for Mirin, as that is a type of Japanese table sauce. Either of the other varients is lovely - but be prepared that she will possibly be mistaken as Miriam (also a beautiful name), especially by older generations.

PenguinLover24 · 27/12/2024 17:23

Love the name, congratulations! I like Mirren, I know two and they're Mirren! X

KittenBiscuit · 27/12/2024 17:23

And many congratulations to you on your beautiful baby girl!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/12/2024 17:28

Merryn is a lovely, real, name and not a rice wine or the surname of a celebrated actress

Beaverbridge · 27/12/2024 17:29

Love this name. Mirrin.

Harmonyrose · 27/12/2024 18:17

Congratulation on your baby girl.
I agree with 'LadyMonicaBaddingham'. When I read this, drinking Japanese rice wine or talking about the actress. Maybe come up with more names.
All the best x

Mirren comes from Scottish Gaelic. St. Mirren is a Scottish football team. The original St . Mirin was written with only one ‘r’ and there is a chapel dedicated to him in Paisley abbey.

Teladi · 27/12/2024 18:21

Mirren is also a "real name" and how most Scottish folk would spell it.

Yes I agree with this .. in Scotland it would be Mirren. Same as the actress Helen Mirren.

Scottish here and I also picked Mirren! I love the name!

Onthefarsideoftheworld · 27/12/2024 18:30

Also going back a bit to when my gran was young…. girls in Scotland named Marion were sometimes nicknamed Mirren. .. it was never written so don’t know how to spell it …just because it was quicker and easier to say.

SnowyIcySnow · 27/12/2024 18:42

Double r!
Less bothered about the i or e, but think the e is slightly better.
So, Mirren.

Moreteaandchocolate · 27/12/2024 18:43

Ooh lovely name - I voted Mirren. I love “Miri” for short ☺️

Emanwenym · 27/12/2024 19:44

Mirren is the least bad of them. Miriam is nice as is Maryam.

Juliagreeneyes · 27/12/2024 19:51

Mirren, definitely. The other variations you’ve suggested will get misspelled. It’s beautiful btw. Congratulations!

mathanxiety · 27/12/2024 20:06

Mirren for sure.

Though you could also consider the Irish Muireann (pr Mwirrin) :-)

AllthingsRosy · 27/12/2024 20:43

Thanks everyone, much appreciated !

I should probably have said that we’re Scottish and from Glasgow so most folk around us know the name from the football team, the cathedral or Braveheart (although I think that’s Murrin) 😄

Also aware of the rice wine, I don’t think that puts me off that spelling though 🤔

I like it pronounced with an “in” and not an “en” at the end - so I guess that should rule out Mirren but that is the most popular way everywhere I’ve asked

Decisio decisions 😄

I would seriously rethink this. Mirin is a Japanese rice wine! Everyone will think you’ve named her after that. It is pretty sounding but so is mayonnaise…..

VegTrug · 27/12/2024 20:51

Everybody who sees her name written down will assume she’s Japanese or half Japanese. Also if you don’t spell it Mirin then they will also assume her parents just got the spelling of the rice wine incorrect 🍶 I don’t mean that to sound mean, I’m just giving my perspective. Merryn however is beautiful

oobedobe · 27/12/2024 21:45

our friends have a daughter called Mahrin I think it is a persian version, I've always like the sound of it.

Emanwenym · 27/12/2024 22:54

Highly unlikely that a male Scottish saint has a version of a Persian name for a woman.

doodleschnoodle · 27/12/2024 22:59

Mirren. We know a couple (Scotland) and they're both spelled that way. It's a lovely name and if you're in Scotland, will be totally understood.

Harkinonnowhear · 27/12/2024 23:02

Bloody love it. In Irish it is Muireann it is absolutely lovely. No help on a Scottish spelling. It has got me wanting to watch braveheart for the zillionith time.

Ikeameatballs · 27/12/2024 23:03

Mirren
