Help us decide on the spelling! It took long enough to choose her name but we now have options on the spelling 😫 - I didn’t expect this bit to be so hard😅

Please help 😂

People on this thread are being ridiculous. I'm Scottish and so are you op. Mirren is a name that is known here and no one here thinks of a wine or a Japanese sauce. It's so rude to suggest going for a different name when clearly the op has chosen it and they're only asking about spelling. I like / would pick Mirren and it's also how I've seen people I know spell it, I don't think of anything, not even Helen Mirren, I just think oh what a lovely name. I do like Mirrin and the way I say both sounds the exact same. Fair enough she might have to correct spelling if it's Mirrin but who really cares I have a name that can be spelt god knows how many ways and I always just quickly say "two p's" for example. Like saying Mollie, "with an IE not Y".

doodleschnoodle · 28/12/2024 01:08

Yes I would pronounce them the same too (Glasgow-born but been elsewhere in Scotland for last 20 years). It would be purely a spelling difference for me.

@FiloPasty 😆

Sure, it will take a few seconds to get over it. Just that people will think her parents liked the sound and spelling of the name but did not realise it is actually a ... Japanese sweet rice wine.

Or people will think it's a perfectly normal name that has been in existence in most of Scotland for a hell of a lot longer than mirin has been available in the local Tescos!

@AllthingsRosy, it's a lovely name, I would personally go for Mirren, as I think it's the most common spelling here. And congratulations!

Edited for spelling.

Needanewname42 · 28/12/2024 02:34

I'm also near Glasgow and would stick with Mirren.

Not sure how Marieanne and the multiple ways to spell it could be any less complicated than Mirren, and we all know St Mirren is spelt that way even if in some parts its pronounced St Murrin.

BTW I've never heard of a Japanese wine 🍷, don't think it will be anything to worry about in Scotland.

Congratulations 🎊

Mirren is attractive and strong and quite well known.
It's a great choice.

I also like ..

Japanese cooking wine has one r - it’s Mirin.

Mirren is lovely as is Merryn.

Celynfour · 28/12/2024 19:00

I am the only person on Mumsnet who had no idea that there is a Japanese rice wine called mirin ? I don’t think everyone will immediately think of that . More likely to think ‘Mirren - what a pretty and traditional Scottish name ‘ .

Needanewname42 · 28/12/2024 19:03

@Celynfour nope your not alone.

Yes. You'd never heard of it but on here there was a chorus of 'Japanese rice wine'

Marieanne seems a complicated way of writing Marianne.

Mirren is the usual I think

lovely name

Getuptherenow · 28/12/2024 20:52

My youngest daughter is called Muireann. It's Irish from the legend about a beautiful mermaid in a lake. Pronounced mwurrin.

Susc · 01/09/2025 00:41

My daughter's Mirrin

Susc · 01/09/2025 00:52

Mirrin was actually a 13th century Irish saint who moved to Paisley, hence the FC, schools etc being called St Mirren, albeit a different spelling. My daughter is Mirrin. I have always loved the name and still do. If I'd called her Soysauce, then yeah, problematic. But Japanese rice wine??? Not a thing! 🤣

SnowFrogJelly · 01/09/2025 00:54

Merryn

Susc · 01/09/2025 01:00

Actually, it doesn't matter how you spell it, you'll always be asked to spell it out over the phone. My daughter Mirrin often gets Mirren. Neither of us are too bothered. Main thing is people usually pronounce it properly 👍

Susc · 01/09/2025 01:07

Don't know what you decided but I had a girl name picked out years before I had a child and 19 years on, I'm still delighted with my choice, Mirrin ☺️, ❤️
