Hello there,

My husband and I are massively struggling with names for a boy after having a remarkably easy time naming our daughter (Eleanor). It seems that we have very different taste in boy names despite our similar taste in girl names.

I generally like classic names:
Henry
George
Theodore (Theo)
James
Alexander

The only name he seems to actually like is Thomas, but he also doesn’t dislike the following random assortment of names:
Sebastian
Hudson
Jasper
Carter
Alfie
Leon

I could get behind Sebastian or Jasper, but he doesn’t love them, and I’d ideally like something we are both very happy with. The other big issue we’ve run into is that our surname is short and ends in -o, so we ideally would have a multisyllabic name that doesn’t end in -o. DH also likes Theo, but it doesn’t work with our surname.

Please do let me know if you have any ideas that we haven’t thought of - we are desperate over here!

I was going to suggest Thomas as I know a sibling set Eleanor and Thomas and think it is lovely.

I really like Sebastian too which seems to suit both of your tastes

Hudson and Cartee are awful

I know a Wyatt, that might suit you both. Other suggestions:

Otis
Malachi
Joel
Daniel
Samson
Solomon
Alaric or Alec
Zachary

I know siblings Isabella, Eleanor and Henry. I think Henry works very well with Eleanor.

Thomas goes lovely with Eleanor and is a strong classic name

GreyhoundGal1 · 26/12/2024 09:01

What is it about Thomas you dislike as I'd have thought that would have been your taste too? Shame Theon is the game of thrones character (although it is also a real name) as that combines Leon and Theo.

What about Tristan, Toby, Peter, Matteo (different ending emphasis to Leo), Julian, Dylan, Gabriel, Spencer, Silas?

Northtosouth · 26/12/2024 12:22

Was also going to suggest Miles as a PP has.

crelsb · 26/12/2024 14:24

Thank you all!! The resounding support for Thomas suggests to me that I should perhaps be the one to compromise…

To those who asked, the only reason I don’t like Thomas is that I cannot break the association with a boy I went to primary school with and who I was never a fan of. But something tells me that my child and his name would certainly break that association.

Thank you again to all of you - I also love the Frederick and Felix ideas especially, so I’ll see how those go over with DH.

I absolutely love your choices. James, George and Alexander are my top three boy names. I do also love Thomas, and think it would be gorgeous with Eleanor!

Personally, I’m not keen on any of his choices. I just can’t get on board with the MN love for Jasper. I like the suggestion of Frederick, although Freddie seems to be the most popular name where I’m based!

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 27/12/2024 11:02

Christopher
Edward
Edwin
Benedict
Benjamin
Nathaniel
Milo
Julian

I love Elliott but probably a bit much with Eleanor.

timoteigirl · 06/01/2025 19:10

what did you decide in the end?

crelsb · 12/01/2025 02:07

timoteigirl · 06/01/2025 19:10

what did you decide in the end?

We are still somewhat undecided! We have, however, at least narrowed it down a bit to Sebastian, Thomas, and Frederick. I wish my husband were less stubborn as I suspect I’ve compromised far more than he has, but what can you do! I know that I’ll ultimately love whatever name our little boy has. Again, thank you all so much for your help (and your validation that my names were better…).
