Twin girls! Ottilie? Ophelia? Eloise?

Ottilie, Ophelia and Eloise are the top three choices here. I love the matching initials of two O names (not concerned about post, etc. My two sisters and I have the same initials and have never had issues!) but have also loved Eloise for years, so would love some help!

I would go with Ophelia and Elouise.

I wouldn’t give twin girls, almost certainly born on the same day the same ‘1st initial, last name’.

I'd go with ophelia and eloise. Ottilie will be shortened to Tilly and Eloise to Ellie which sounds very matchy.

Also word of caution a twin please don't do matching initials. It's not a problem for siblings because you don't share all your other important information with a sibling in the same way you do with a twin.

They will have the same date of birth, place of birth, first initial and same surname and this can and does cause problems especially when technology is relied upon.

We’re not concerned about initials being the same. My husbands nephews are twins - John and James, and there are no concerns there around initials. So just interested in which names you think go best together!

ophelia is not my favourite and I think it’s very hard for it not to be pretentious.

So I would go Elouise and Ottilie (I don’t think Ellie/Tilly is inevitable but I also think they are nice if that happens).

I wouldn’t go matching initials and personally I just hate the name Orphelia, to me it sounds like the name of a girl who is rich and pretentious and bullies other kids at high school. I get the exact same vibe from the name Cordelia which is probably explained by being a big Buffy fan as a teen but don’t know why Orphelia feels the same. Just seems a bit try-hard I guess, it would be a very over the top name for anyone in my circles to choose but seems popular in some richer areas so may be a completely standard choice where you are!

On the nickname front for Ottilie - we’d probably try and use Lottie or Lettie rather than Ottie or Tillie

I have to agree with pps that Ophelia just sounds pretentious and I personally can’t stand it. Ottilie and Eloise go nicely together.

Generally though you don't get to pick the nickname, her school friends will. Would Charlotte be better for Lottie?

(I don't like the same initial but that's more because I think twins should be treated as 2 individual people, e.g not dressed in the same outfits or given similar names like Milly/Tilly etc, but that's just me!)

I don't get that any one of these names sounds more pretentious than another as some PP are suggesting. Ophelia is classic, Shakespearean. Not that far from the ubiquitous Olivia really.

I like Ophelia but it's connections are too tragic. Could Daphne work?

Personally I think all combinations of the three are a bit samey and frilly. Eloise and Ottilie doesn't roll for me.

Nobody including you is going to stick with using two three syllable names. So Lottie and Ellie probably. A bit twee but fine. I would personally pick something that doesn’t have a shortening that ends in ‘ie’.
If you like fancy feminine names then maybe Aurora, Clarissa, Leonora.

@Sunflowers1999 , the Elouise misspelling would be enough to put me off using the name. It's horrible.

If you are going to shorten the names,use names you like as first names, and the long names as middle names. I wouldn't use the same initials. They will be two individuals not two halves of a matching set.

Ophelia and Ottilie are just way too similar. I know they're twins but don't do that to them. I knew twins called Jennifer and Genevieve and even though they're different names, different initials and having twins myself, I could still never remember which was which as just too similar in sound.

I think Ophelia and Ottilie are both lovely - but together are a bit much, for some reason. Choose your favourite. I don't think three syllables has to be abbreviated either - mine isn't and neither is my daughter's (she's 27). That's personal choice. She has a friend Eloise, same age, equally her name has never been shortened.

I don't really like any of them. Ophelia makes me think 'feel', Ottilie 'otter' and Eloise is just another El name.
Eloise is the best of the 3, but the awful misspelling makes me think 'louse'.

I like Ottilie and Eloise together. Lottie and Ellie sound nice together too. I’m not a fan of Ophelia (pretentious to me).

I have twins, now grown-up. It's hard for twins to develop their own identity, including potentially finding separate friendship groups at school. Mine tell me they are really glad they have separate initials and names that aren't too "matchy". They both have classic names, one with 2 syllables, the other with 3. We do have pet names but generally we (and their friends) use their full names.
I think Eloise is absolutely beautiful (it was on my list). Of the 3 you suggest, I would pick Ophelia and Eloise (I find Ottilie quite harsh-sounding). And I would use the "O" name for the first-born twin, so that the second-born has her name called out first at school etc. Little things like that really mattered to my girls.
