You don't have to respond to all of these, just general feelings. Also, I'm American, so I've noticed some of these names have a more "dated" connotation in the UK than in the US.

Girls:

Felicity "Flick"

Tessa "Tess"

Juliet "Jules"

Violet

Scarlett

Elizabeth "Eliza"

Sylvia "Sylvie"

Margot

Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie?

Caroline

Susannah

Charlotte

May/Mae

Lily

Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah")

Boys:

Miles

Christopher "Kit"

Fraser

Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"):

Dean

August

James "Jamie"

William

Rowan

Robin (maybe too girly in the US?)

Jasper

Jack

Griffin

Just not Graham, never met a nice one. Like Nigel or Clive. Old right wing man. Sorry.

danascully96 · 20/12/2024 05:42

I like the sound because it reminds me of graham crackers (which are delicious) and men in sweaters since most Grahams here are preppy, whereas “GRAY-um” sounds grayer lol

I’ll confess that we bastardize the mother tongue a lot 😅 And we do say water weird! We should enunciate the “t” better. We also shouldn’t put the punctuation mark inside the quotes and should defer to the British style “ “. We are maniacs over here 😜

You're a wild lot - I'll give you that 😁

Namesy · 20/12/2024 07:03

My top 3 from your girl list: Eliza, Lily and Madeline (pronounced mad-eh-lin if you're living in the UK). Also, you're pronouncing Dahlia incorrectly.

Boys: James, William and Robin. You're pronouncing Graham incorrectly.

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/12/2024 07:30

Girls:
Felicity "Flick" - Flick is awful
Tessa "Tess" - like

Violet - not keen on Vi
Scarlett -ok
Elizabeth "Eliza" - like Elizabeth but not Eliza

Dahlia - it's Dahl-ya or Dayl-ya. Dolly or Delia is OK
Boys:
Miles - - like
Christopher "Kit" - like
Fraser - like
Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"): - like but it's Grey-um. dated
Dean - like but it's dated
August - don't like, AU-gust or Au-GUST?
James "Jamie" - would pick
William - ok
Rowan - ok
Robin (maybe too girly in the US?) - ok (probably)

NoCarbsForMe · 20/12/2024 07:57

Please no to Graham for a baby. However you pronounce it. Sounds like a middle aged bald IT guy to me.

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/12/2024 08:05

Why the sneery comments about baldness? People can't help going bald and it's quite normal.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 19/12/2024 20:52

Girls:
Felicity "Flick" - very 90s
Tessa "Tess" - fine for a 40yo
Juliet "Jules" - Juliet, lovely. Jules.. nickname for someone born in the 60s
Violet - it's ok
Scarlett - I don't like this
Elizabeth "Eliza" - can't stand this
Sylvia "Sylvie" - I don't like Sylvia but love Sylvie
Margot - very very popular
Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie? - Maddie is 100% going to happen
Caroline - very dated
Susannah - also dated
Charlotte - not as popular as it used to be but a classic name
May/Mae - not my cup of tea
Lily - lovely name but dime a dozen (probably because it's a lovely name)
Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah") - you might get dar-lea here

Boys:
Miles - love this
Christopher "Kit" - don't like Christopher but love Kit
Fraser - dear Jesus no
Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM") - you'll get "gray-um" in the UK. A name for a middle aged man
Dean - no no no no no. Thought this had died a death with Barry and Nigel
August - bit out there, but ok
James "Jamie" - love Jamie
William - love
Rowan - nice for a kid, not sure I like it for an adult
Robin (maybe too girly in the US?) - too girly
Jasper - love it for a kid, again not sure it suits an adult
Jack - YES x100
Griffin - family guy

“Dar-lea” is a better way to write out how I pronounce Dahlia for non-rhotic accents. See, “doll” and Roald “Dahl” sound identical in my accent. But I know long-A words are written with an intrusive “r” for many British accents (“Dar” for Dahlia instance), so next time I won’t make that mistake 😉

Oh.
Are you telling me Graham crackers are Gram (grahhm) and not gray-am crackers???? Mind blown over here 🤣🤣.

I was equally confused when I discovered the reason Americans say criss cross apple sauce for sitting cross legged is because they think cross and sauce rhyme.... I always thought it was just a random bizarre name 🤣

danascully96 · 20/12/2024 21:34

I’m pronouncing Dahlia like “Dar-lea” for non-rhotic accents.

Yeah, if you move to England your child would be called Day-Lee-ah. Gray-ham or mad-a-lynn. If you would hate that then I'd choose something more universal as just saying 'we say it this way' will get you nowhere.

Oh, I wouldn’t correct anyone if it’s simply a difference of culture/accent (except for Madeline because I don’t chalk that up to an accent difference). Madeline would also be pronounced with the “Lynn” ending here in the US, I just feel like the “line” ending makes more sense because we all know the famous books/movie.

Um. Sorry but I have no clue what book/films you are referring to!
I've heard of coraline, which is cora line.

weareallcats · 20/12/2024 22:33

Felicity “Flick” - Felicity 10/10 (Flick - no)

Tessa “Tess” - no

Juliet “Jules” - Juliet 9/10 (Jules - no)

Violet - 8/10

Elizabeth “Eliza” - 2/10

Sylvia “Sylvie” - 9/10 for Sylvie (far less keen on Sylvia)

Margot - 7/10

Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie? - like with Mad-uh-lynn pronunciation, but not Mad-uh-line.

Caroline - nice enough

Susannah - know a Zanna, which I like a lot, also like Shosana.

Boys:
Miles - 6/10

Christopher “Kit” - Kit is great 10/10

That was covered in vines
Lived twelve little girls
in two straight lines.”

All of your names are acceptable and sweet.
My favourites, inspired by your list ..

Felicity
Tess - no need for Tessa.
Elizabeth
Eliza
Charlotte
Julia - nicer than Juliet.
Scarlett
Margot or Margaret
Madeleine - dislike the other pronunciation.
Susanna
Caroline

Lily and May are common.
Dahlia and Silvia are not to my taste.
Violet sounds like Violent.
Do you like Viola?

Christopher - Chris not Kit
Miles
James - dislike Jamie.
William
Augustus
Rohan or Rowan
Robin
Jasper
Griffin

Fraser is a better surname.
Jack is not as handsome as John.
Dean is a1980s cricketer.
Graham sounds so different - okay as a second name.

mathanxiety · 21/12/2024 04:33

I love Tessa, Sylvia, and Susannah. The rest of the girl names are either twee or meh. Scarlett is awful.

I like all of the boy names except Graham and Dean.

mathanxiety · 21/12/2024 04:35

SnoopysHoose · 19/12/2024 19:43

Doll le yah, is made up,
Gram for Graham is also daft.
Stick to names ppl can pronounce.

Doll-le-yah is how the name Dahlia is pronounced in the US. It's the name of a flower usually pronounced Day-leah.

FoxFaceRabbitFish · 21/12/2024 10:31

OP just wondering if you have watched The Holiday recently as lots of characters have made it onto your list! Cameron Diaz pronunces Graham as Grahm in that film so maybe that explains your thinking - it makes sense in an American accent but not a British one, so it probably depends where you live. It’s quite an outdated name so could seem out of place on a baby but I don’t think it matters, once you’ve named your baby I think people start to reframe it as a baby name anyway.

MerryChristmasToYou · 21/12/2024 11:17

Tess - no need for Tessa. - this.

Wolfpa · 21/12/2024 11:25

Felicity "Flick"- Felicity is nice but Flick is terrible at school there will be lots of jokes about Flicking your bean. Why not shorten your Fliss instead
