You don't have to respond to all of these, just general feelings. Also, I'm American, so I've noticed some of these names have a more "dated" connotation in the UK than in the US.

Girls:

Felicity "Flick"

Tessa "Tess"

Juliet "Jules"

Violet

Scarlett

Elizabeth "Eliza"

Sylvia "Sylvie"

Margot

Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie?

Caroline

Susannah

Charlotte

May/Mae

Lily

Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah")

Boys:

Miles

Christopher "Kit"

Fraser

Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"):

Dean

August

James "Jamie"

William

Rowan

Robin (maybe too girly in the US?)

Jasper

Jack

Griffin

The reason I love Dean is because of GG (although he does end up being a jerk later on). I also love Dean Martin!

Over here ( UK) Dean would grow up to be a 'tradie'. Carpenter, roofer, plasterer, electrician. Not a classy name at all.

StarryPotter · 19/12/2024 22:14

Girls:

Violet - ok
Scarlett - nice
Elizabeth "Eliza" - I like Eliza
Sylvia "Sylvie" - nice
Margot - not sure, think it sounds a bit harsh
Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie? - nice name but nt keen on Maddie, probably will get called Maddie or Mads
Caroline - no
Susannah - no, but I like Susie
Charlotte - nice, safe, classic
May/Mae - no, feels over used (especially as middle name)
Lily - yes, nice and feminine
Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah") - no, I don’t like the pronunciation you use

I'm not keen on the boys list apart from Jasper and Jack.

But Jack is a little bit meh.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 19/12/2024 22:29

I don't think any are awful.

I find Lily to be the most bland/overused name (a personal opinion with no offence ro any little Lily's meant of course, people definitely think the same of one of my kids names from what I've seen on here).

Jack instantly makes me think brat, and overused too.

Dean and William are bland too, Fraser is just OK.

BootballJoy · 19/12/2024 22:43

Felicity "Flick" - wet blanket name, sorry!
Tessa "Tess" - great
Juliet "Jules" - also great
Violet - not a fan, don't like the sound
Scarlett - not a fan, don't like the sound
Elizabeth "Eliza" - strongly dislike Eliza but Elizabeth is good
Sylvia "Sylvie" - fine
Margot - ok
Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie? - I don't like the line ending. The Madeleine pronunciation is beautiful. Either way likely to get Maddie or Mads in the UK
Caroline - has grown on me recently. Although don't like the line bit.
Susannah - nice
Charlotte - don't like the sound
May/Mae - refreshing as a first name, overdone as a middle
Lily - nice
Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah") - not a fan

Boys:
Miles - don't like the sound
Christopher "Kit" - yes!
Fraser - not a fan
Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"): so dated in the UK
Dean - also dated
August - quite nice
James "Jamie" - love Jamie, dislike James
William - great name
Rowan - ok
Robin (maybe too girly in the US?) - prefer it on a boy. Good name.
Jasper - nice
Jack - nice
Griffin - I really like Griffin.

menopausalfart · 19/12/2024 22:51

My daughter's name is Rowan. it's one of my favourite names.

Carouselfish · 19/12/2024 22:58

I guessed you were US as 'Gram' Graham Crackers are Digestives.

Am surprised Scarlett is on the list then as Gone with the Wind a banned book there, no?

I like Charlotte and Dahlia. Jack and Miles.

Cannotorwillnot · 19/12/2024 23:14

No ranking, just some comments:
Felicity is lovely but Flick is awful.
Juliet is nice but I don’t like Jules. Those two nicknames are the sort of thing your friends might call you when you’re a teenager but they’re not what your parents should call you.
If you want to change Sylvia to Sylvie, just call her Sylvie. They are two different names.
Madeline is pronounced Madelin here. I’ve never heard of MadeLINE.
Everyone in this country will pronounce Dahlia as Day-lee-a. I don’t like it either way.
The other girls' names are fine.

Christopher is nice but I don’t like Kit (school kids talk about their PE kit)
Gram is not a name here. It’s a unit of weight.
August - just no. Pretentious.
Griffin - weird.’
The rest are fine.

EvieR · 19/12/2024 23:15

Are you living in the UK or America? As if you are in the UK you won't get those pronunciations that you have specified. Everyone will just assume that it is just your accent and pronounce the names in the English way IMO.

Numbered In order.

1 Griffin

I am currently in the US, but my boyfriend is from the UK and we may one day move back. I only mentioned the pronunciations in case they made the name sound better since I know Graham is dated in the UK. Clearly, my attempt backfired as everyone hates the US pronunciation even more 🤣

I should have written Dahlia as “Dahl” instead of “Doll,” but those two sound identical to my ears.

I like Madeleine but not Mad-uh-LINE. That will be made fun of and will be ignored. Everyone will call her Mad-uh-Lynn. Or Maddie

Yeah, actually, this is a point where Brits and Americans agree because Madeline is usually pronounced with the “lynn” ending over here as well. I grew up with the books, so I am partial to the “line” ending.

I've never understood why Americans pronounce Graham as GRAM, it just annoys me every time I hear it. Why even bother with the extra letters?
I wouldn't call him that if you're living in the UK as hell be explaining a weird pronunciation every time anyone reads his name or more likely will just learn to pronounce it properly and then it won't be the name you wanted.

I like the sound because it reminds me of graham crackers (which are delicious) and men in sweaters since most Grahams here are preppy, whereas “GRAY-um” sounds grayer lol

I’ll confess that we bastardize the mother tongue a lot 😅 And we do say water weird! We should enunciate the “t” better. We also shouldn’t put the punctuation mark inside the quotes and should defer to the British style “ “. We are maniacs over here 😜

FancyNewt · 20/12/2024 05:42

I like Caroline, Charlotte or Susannah.

Miles and Jack.

I like Jules, but not Juliet. Prefer Julia.

Any name that is likely to be pronounced differently will be a pain ( I have a name like that and have spent my whole life correcting people on how to say it ). Don't assume people will opt for a nick name of your preference. Eg. Elizabeth could be Liz and not Eliza.

FancyNewt · 20/12/2024 05:45

I didn't know Americans said Gram when saying Graham. How peculiar.

sesquipedalian · 20/12/2024 05:46

If you are in the UK, Madeline will be pronounces Madeleine (like the cake) and you don’t stand a chance of Dahlia being said other than as Day-Lee-ah.

ShinyPebble32 · 20/12/2024 06:50

I won’t rank the names as they are all about equal to me - they all give off a middle class, jolly hockey sticks vibe which - if that is your tribe or aspiration - then great, they’re ideal!
But, as someone with a name that’s mispronounced more often than not, I implore you not to bother with the Grem and Dollia pronunciations - your child won’t thank you!
also I know three Madelines and they are all known as Maddie, so that seems pretty unavoidable.
