You don't have to respond to all of these, just general feelings. Also, I'm American, so I've noticed some of these names have a more "dated" connotation in the UK than in the US.

Girls:

Felicity "Flick"

Tessa "Tess"

Juliet "Jules"

Violet

Scarlett

Elizabeth "Eliza"

Sylvia "Sylvie"

Margot

Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie?

Caroline

Susannah

Charlotte

May/Mae

Lily

Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah")

Boys:

Miles

Christopher "Kit"

Fraser

Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"):

Dean

August

James "Jamie"

William

Rowan

Robin (maybe too girly in the US?)

Jasper

Jack

Griffin

Doll le yah, is made up,
Gram for Graham is also daft.
Stick to names ppl can pronounce.

warofthetimemachines · 19/12/2024 19:44

People are getting thrown by the ´Doll’ thing for Dahlia because ´Doll’ and ´Dahl’ have different vowel sounds in English English. So do ´palm’ and ´poll’ for example. I assume you just mean you don’t want an ´y’ sound like in ´day’.

Namechange6578 · 19/12/2024 19:51

Wow we have really similar taste in names!

So I'm a bit biased as I have a Felicity. We sometimes call her Fliss or Flicky.

Other girls names I really like from your list in order are:

Tessa "Tess"
Elizabeth "Eliza" (you may get people using other shortenings like lizzie, I like Beth as a nickname myself)
Sylvia "Sylvie"
Scarlett
Madeline (I considered this but DH wasn't keen. You'll def get Maddie tho!)

Margot
Violet
Lily
Charlotte
Susannah

Fireworknight · 19/12/2024 19:52

Felicity "Flick"
Tessa "Tess"
Juliet "Jules"
Violet
Scarlett
Elizabeth "Eliza"
Sylvia "Sylvie"
Margot
Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie?
Caroline
Susannah
Charlotte
May/Mae
Lily
Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah")
Boys:
Miles
Christopher "Kit"

Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"):

I think that any name where there are different pronunciations can cause problems and can set your child up for a lifetime of having to say " it's not grayam it's gram" etc This is especially true if you choose a less common pronunciation.
From your girls names I like Elizabeth Sylvia Caroline and Susannah.
For boys, I like Christopher, James and William.

Why are you pronouncing Dahlia like that? I’ve never heard it said like that.
Anyway, from your girls names I think Caroline and Lily are the nicest, and from the boys, Rowan, James and William.

Felicity "Flick" - Flick is an absolutely terrible nickname. Felicity is sweet though, if a bit twee
Tessa "Tess" - I really like it
Juliet "Jules" - Gorgeous imo
Violet - Nice but quite popular
Scarlett - Not my favourite, but nothing bad about it
Elizabeth "Eliza" - I just think calling her just Eliza would be much better
Sylvia "Sylvie" - Just call her Sylvie! But it's pretty
Margot - I do like it but it makes me think Maggot
Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- It's a lovely name but I don't think you could skive getting Maddie to be honest.
Caroline - Seems a bit old
Susannah - Same, seems a little old
Charlotte - Gorgeous actually. Lottie is so sweet
May/Mae - I think it's too short and very well known as a middle name more
Lily - Lovely but popular
Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah") - Horrible imo, that pronunciation would not be said right honestly
Boys:
Miles - I like it
Christopher "Kit" - A lovely name. Kit is good but you'd have to enforce it
Fraser - Terrible
Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"): - No, I don't understand how it'd be pronounced like that
Dean - It's okay, makes me think of a dean of a school or Gilmore Girls
August - My absolute favourite, it is such a lovely name
James "Jamie" - Also one of my favourites!! Gorgeous
William - It's a bit meh but nothing wrong
Rowan - I LOVE this
Robin (maybe too girly in the US?) - I honestly think of it as a girls name more
Jasper - Love this too!! So much
Jack - Nice but basic
Griffin - Hmm not for me
Fav girls' names: Juliet, Sylvia and Charlotte
Fav boys' names: August, James, Rowan and Jasper

Of the boys names they are all good and lovely except Dean (really dated in the UK), Graham (don't know one under 40 and most over that by a good decade) and if you live in the UK it will always be Grey-um. Griffin to me will always be the lion eagle mythical beast
Of the girls names, all very pretty. Caroline is the name of a dear friend of mine who died this year and a bit like Graham I don't know any under 40. Mae and Lily are so popular as is Scarlett. I think I like Felicity and Sylvia best from your list. Margot is also cute but very 2024/2023 due to Margot Robbie who led to it being v popular

Scarlett and Margot v popular round my way in the UK right now. Dahlia and to a lesser extent Madeline will be pronounced wrong this side of the Atlantic.
Dean - this is mega dated and has strong working class connotations. August is totally the opposite, mega posh (Princess Eugenie's son).

I started writing comments on all of them but felt like a real bitch. They're ever dull and boring, overused or old names.
I also think jasper is a pet name but know it's a firm fave with the mn crew.
Acceptable, even quite nice, ones as not categorised as above
Tess
Dahlia
Utterly normal but classic so can't be bad
Elizabeth
Charlotte
Jack
William

Girls:*
Felicity "Flick" felicity is nice deciding now on "flick" as a nickname seems cringeworthy somehow.
Tessa "Tess" ok
Juliet "Jules" Love Juliet not fussed on Jules but then I hate the idea of deciding a nickname before a child is even born.
Violet: pretty
Scarlett: ok but not a fan
Elizabeth "Eliza": love Elizabeth, but it's such a versatile name...let the child choose their own shortened version.
Sylvia "Sylvie" nope, dated and not my taste.
Margot: love this
Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie? Love Madeline and Maddie.
Caroline: nothing wrong with it as such but just very plain and dated
Susannah: love this name, especially this spelling of it
Charlotte: nice, good solid name
May/Mae: ok but bland
Lily: my all time favourite name
Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah") no, too flouncy for real life
Boys:
Miles: not bad but a bit posh for me
Christopher "Kit" love this, especially Kit.
Fraser: he'll be born wearing a paisley waistcoat
Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"):
Dean: rebel without a cause, but still not keen.
August: dear God no!
James "Jamie" love Jamie or James.
William: nice ordinary name, can't go wrong.
Rowan: I love this but it's unusual for a boy?
Robin (maybe too girly in the US?) not keen
Jasper: like but don't love
Jack: nice but ordinary
Griffin it's a surname to me!

LOVE most of your girls names (also, you get extra points as my own name is one the ones of your list!)
Caroline would have been the name of my daughter if I didn't have an Aunty Caroline (who's lovely, but it would just be a bit odd for me to accidentally name my child after her). It's probably because I love the fleetwood mac song. I also love the nickname Caro.
Sylvia is lovely but if you want Sylvie just call her that, I think it's a proper enough name in its own right.
Jules is nice, but I prefer Julia to Juliet - Julia just seems stronger to me.
Dahlia is fine, but I'm not quite sure about your pronunciation
Lily is fine but there are soooo many Lilys right now so be aware of that! 🤣
I'm less keen on your boys names.
I do like Jasper a lot (again I've a relative with this name, or else I'm sure it would have been a contender for me too!)
August is fab, as is Robin.
I love Christopher with nn Kit, but I don't know how successful you'd be with getting everyone to use the nn.
If you're in the UK, don't use Dean, Fraser or Graham imo (also nobody British will ever pronounce it "gram")
"Jack" is not a proper name IMO, but I am very aware most people will think that's a slightly bonkers opinion.

I think you and I have quite similar tastes in names OP, I like most of them a lot and one of my DC’s name’s in your list. I like Tess a lot but not Tessa so much. I would’ve used Tess myself if it had gone with our surname.

Not a fan of August and I like the name Graham on adults but can’t imagine a baby Graham nowadays.

crostini · 19/12/2024 19:58

Flick and gram and just objectively awful

CountAdhemar · 19/12/2024 20:02

May/Mae is a month.
Graham has two syllables.
August is also a month.
Dean is a surname.
Jasper is a dog's name.
Griffin is a mythical animal.

Apart from that, they're fine.

Felicity and William are probably the pick of the bunch.

How do you get Dolly from Day in Dahlia

IaltagDhubh · 19/12/2024 20:15

Girls:
Felicity "Flick" - dated, nn Flick might invite stupid comments about “flicking the bean”.
Tessa "Tess" - fine.
Juliet "Jules" - fine.
Violet - I like this, but I can’t help reading it as Violent.
Scarlett - meh
Elizabeth "Eliza" - Elisabeth is gorgeous and classic, with many nicer and more interesting nicknames than Eliza
Sylvia "Sylvie" - prefer Sylvie to Sylvia
Margot - nice, makes me think of Margot Leadbetter which is not a bad thing.
Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie? - in the uk it would be pronounced Mad uh lin, and Maddie is totally inevitable, lovely name though.
Caroline - love it, but here it’s probably another 10 to 20 years away from coming back into fashion
Susannah - nice
Charlotte - so fucking BORING! There are Charlottes everywhere now, can’t walk down the street with out falling over a couple of three year old Charlottes. Lottie is the worst nickname ever. I also absolutely loathe hearing Charlotte pronounced with an American accent (sorry!). I have strong feelings about this one because it’s my name, so I’m allowed to be rude about it…
May/Mae - nice, prefer Mae, very popular though.
Lily - boring
Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah") - would be pronounced Day Lee Uh, or possibly Dahh Lee Uh, but if you tried to get people here to pronounce it Doll Lee Yah you would get some confused looks.
Boys:
Miles - bit posh, fine.
Christopher "Kit" - Christopher is fine, personally I hate Kit as a nickname but that’s only because I knew one who did something truly awful, so I can’t be objective.
Fraser - fine if you have a Scottish connection, otherwise not.
Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"): - nope, would be pronounced Grey Um, and everyone would expect him to be in his mid 60s.
Dean - dated, bad, very bad.
August - doesn’t feel like a boy’s name to me, not keen.
James "Jamie" - love it, choose this one!
William - meh
Rowan - prefer it for a girl, but it’s nice.
Robin (maybe too girly in the US?) - love Robyn for a girl, Robin for a boy just feels a bit wet.
Jasper - great for a labrador.
Jack - meh. He’ll be one of six Jacks in his class and will forever be known as Jack Initial.
Griffin - makes me think of Family Guy. Not keen on Surnames as first names.

So basically, if it’s a girl go for Elisabeth with the nickname,Beth, or Betty, or Bessie, or Libby, or Ella, or even Lily. And if it’s a boy go for James/Jamie.

Afterchristmas · 19/12/2024 20:18

Thunderlegs · 19/12/2024 20:19

Felicity "Flick" - makes me think of yer one off neighbours
Tessa "Tess" - okay
Juliet "Jules" - like a lot
Violet - like
Scarlett - no
Elizabeth "Eliza" - like a lot
Sylvia "Sylvie" - love
Margot - no
Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie? - no
Caroline - no
Susannah - no
Charlotte - no
May/Mae - no
Lily - okay
Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah") - no
Boys:
Miles - yes
Christopher "Kit" - very nice
Fraser - nah
Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM"): the main reason I replied to this post - to say absolutely not.
Dean - no
August - no
James "Jamie" - yes
William - yes
Rowan - nice, also works for a girl
Robin (maybe too girly in the US?) - yes
Jasper - no, he is not a puppy
Jack - no
Griffin - no 😂

Why are you pronouncing Dahlia like that? I’ve never heard it said like that.

Anyway, from your girls names I think Caroline and Lily are the nicest, and from the boys, Rowan, James and William.

Maybe I’m writing it out weird. Basically I say it like the flower, although I know some Brits pronounce it like “DAY-Lee-yah.”

I think with the nonrhotic accent, I’d write it out like “DAR-lee-yah” (with the “r” being silent).

Caroline ( “Callie”)
Susannah (“Susie”)

Ok 6/10
Scarlett
Sylvia “Sylvie”

Dislike 1/10
Felicity - a bit frilly and don’t like any of the nn’s
Dahlia - usually pronounced “Dahlia” in UK

Boys:

Favourites 10/10
James
Jasper
Jack

Also very nice 8/10
William
Fraser

ok 5/10
Christopher (not keen on Kit)
Miles (a bit posh)
Rowan (like but worried it will become a girls name over time)
August (I just hear the month)
Robin (like but worried it will become a girls name over time)
Griffin (love Griff as nn)

Dislike 1/10
Dean (dated in a bad way)
Graham (dated and pronounced Gray-um here)

Doll le yah, is made up,
Gram for Graham is also daft.
Stick to names ppl can pronounce.

Ok, I shouldn’t have provided pronunciations. All of the pronunciations I gave are the way most Americans say these names. I was just including that info because I thought it might be helpful, but everyone thinks I’m wanting to mispronounce these names when that’s just how we say these names in the US 🥲

People are getting thrown by the ´Doll’ thing for Dahlia because ´Doll’ and ´Dahl’ have different vowel sounds in English English. So do ´palm’ and ´poll’ for example. I assume you just mean you don’t want an ´y’ sound like in ´day’.

Yes, this is exactly right! I hope everyone sees your comment ⭐️

Graham would almost always be pronounced “GRAM” in the US. I agree that unheard of pronunciations would be strange, though!

Girls:
Felicity "Flick" - very 90s
Tessa "Tess" - fine for a 40yo
Juliet "Jules" - Juliet, lovely. Jules.. nickname for someone born in the 60s
Violet - it's ok
Scarlett - I don't like this
Elizabeth "Eliza" - can't stand this
Sylvia "Sylvie" - I don't like Sylvia but love Sylvie
Margot - very very popular
Madeline (pronounced "MAD-uh-LINE") -- how inevitable is the nn Maddie? - Maddie is 100% going to happen
Caroline - very dated
Susannah - also dated
Charlotte - not as popular as it used to be but a classic name
May/Mae - not my cup of tea
Lily - lovely name but dime a dozen (probably because it's a lovely name)
Dahlia ("DOLL-lee=yah") - you might get dar-lea here

Boys:
Miles - love this
Christopher "Kit" - don't like Christopher but love Kit
Fraser - dear Jesus no
Graham (I pronounce it "GRAM") - you'll get "gray-um" in the UK. A name for a middle aged man
Dean - no no no no no. Thought this had died a death with Barry and Nigel
August - bit out there, but ok
James "Jamie" - love Jamie
William - love
Rowan - nice for a kid, not sure I like it for an adult
Robin (maybe too girly in the US?) - too girly
Jasper - love it for a kid, again not sure it suits an adult

Edited

The reason I love Dean is because of GG (although he does end up being a jerk later on). I also love Dean Martin!
