Thoughts on Cecily

What is on your opinion on Cecily for a girl?
I often seen meaning to be listed as 'blind', but recently I found some comments saying original Latin word (caecus) from which name Cecilia (Cecily) derives might have meaning of 'secret, mystery, obscure' alongside of meaning of blind... I liked this name for a long time, but now that I know that name doesn't necessarily mean blind I like this name even more.
What nicknames would you choose? I like Cissy/Sissy (have some reservation), Cily and Ily (ee-ly), but I know many nicknames aren't really nice. We would mostly be using full name, but would like to find usable short forms even if they aren't most obvious.

I don't love it and it's too close to Cecil.
Cissy as a nn is fine, Cece/CeCe is awful and Ily just seems contrived.

Cecil makes me think of cesspit.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 13/12/2024 18:33

St Cecilia is the patron saint of music. Good namesake, I think.

Cecily's fine, but the only shortening I really like is Cecy (like Cecy Hall in, I think, the What Katy Did books). Ily's awful, sorry. Tbh I wouldn't choose a shortening at all. My dc all have names that lend themselves to shortenings and they all go by their full names, except perhaps to very close friends.

SybilTheSpy · 13/12/2024 18:34

Wouldn't personally be crazy about it. I picture some lisping Victorian child who is a bit of a wet lettuce.

BeatriceAndLottie · 13/12/2024 18:56

Love it! There were 2 in DD’s primary school (early ‘10s) and I always admired it as a beautiful name. Unique but not ‘out there’.

Nicknames come naturally, I wouldn’t overthink it right now. As far as I know those 2 girls were purely known as Cecily - nothing else. I have an aunt Cecilia and the only shortening she ever used was Celia.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/12/2024 18:58

I love it! But I would be afraid to use it in case she had a lisp and struggled to say it.

MilitantFawcett · 13/12/2024 19:03

I think it’s beautiful but I might be biased as I have a lovely relative called Cecily!

Moreteaandchocolate · 13/12/2024 19:31

I’m sorry but Cecily is one of the few names I really dislike - I think it’s the Cess at the start - all the secondary school kids seem to call each other by the first syllable of their names (regardless of preference) which has made me dislike names with an unfortunate first syllable. I also dislike CeCe, Cily (silly?), Sissy (doesn’t that mean wimp?) and Ily (Eely, like an eel?) Sorry to be so negative

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/12/2024 19:42

I’m always surprised that Cecily is so underused in comparison to Emily, Lily, Milly etc. Cecily has a lovely, medieval style, aristocratic elegance to me.

I suspect that it’s just like Claudia - similar style Sophia, Lydia, Olivia etc are popular but Claudia isn’t due to the “meaning”.

But name meaning often changes/evolves with time - especially with these ancient Classical names. For example Claudia may also mean “enclosed/protected” (from Clausus), my own name Julia has evolved from “soft bearded/downy facial haired” to the nicer sounding “youthful” in name guides 🤣and they keep changing their minds on the meaning of Antonia. No reason the same won’t be true of Cecily.

Grannyinnwaiting · 13/12/2024 19:49

love it - in my top 10

frenchfancy55 · 13/12/2024 20:03

It's a gorgeous name! DC3 would have been Cecily if he had been a girl. So pretty.

WitcheryDivine · 13/12/2024 20:06

I like it but prefer Cecilia or Celia

Livinginaclock · 13/12/2024 20:08

Dreadful.
As an aside my Mum's name was Cecilia/Celia and she absolutely hated it.

Comedycook · 13/12/2024 20:10

Annoyingly fussy

HoundsOfHelfire · 13/12/2024 20:12

I prefer Celeste

BruFord · 13/12/2024 20:14

I’ve always liked Cecily, I believe it was popular during Medieval times. It sounds elegant to me. I wouldn’t attempt to shorten it tbh.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 13/12/2024 20:15

I absolutely love it - and like her in The Importance of Being Earnest.

Crispynoodle · 13/12/2024 20:33

Ce-ce is a great nn

pimplebum · 13/12/2024 20:35

I don’t like it but I don’t like other people’s baby names
only you need to like it and it’s not offensive or clashes or has any bad connotations

LlynTegid · 13/12/2024 20:35

Like the name, just concerns about misspelling or silly abbreviations.

BCBird · 13/12/2024 20:39

I.like it. Very classy

Latticexmas · 13/12/2024 21:44

It’s classy and “arty”. I think it’s pretty too and rather posh.

I adore it - one of my top five.
