Baby girl Skye or Violet

Charlotte2411 · 12/12/2024 07:22

Just found out we’ll be having a third baby girl in the summer 2025. We already have an Ivy and Amelie. What are peoples thoughts on the names either Skye or Violet? Or any alternatives that’s go with our other daughters names? I love Skye but haven’t had the best reaction to it when discussing with others.

If you have a connection to the Isle then Skye, otherwise Violet. It's not to my taste (despite loving the little wild flowers) but works better as a name unless you have that connection. If you love it, though, use it, it's fine. I just think Violet has a bit more class, personally.

I have a Skye so am obviously a bit biased 😁. We're not a chavvy family (promise!) and she is a super smart, sensitive, athletic and kind 8 year old who's personality defines how people react to her, not her name. If people judge or dislike her name in private then that's fine with me. I don't aim to control everyone else's opinion on my choices. There's plenty of names I dislike but I wouldn't share that with those people.
She has never been treated unfavorably because some people dislike her name, or because a kids programme about dogs also came out around the time she was born with a Skye in it (we had no idea as first time parents!).
I also think Violet is a really lovely name!
Whichever you choose will be the right one for her.

I think Ruby and Summer go with the names of your other girls.

Jostuki · 12/12/2024 11:54

Skye if you're having a puppy.

Violet reminds me of the spoiled brat Violet Beauregarde.

Not keen on either.

lovelysunshine22 · 12/12/2024 12:32

Skye is very chav....😳

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 12/12/2024 12:34

I love the name Violet. Beautiful flower and colour too.

shoopshoopdedoo · 12/12/2024 12:42

I’m not keen on Violet. Also, I think Violet and Ivy are very matchy (plant names containing a “v”) and that makes Amelie the odd one out.

So I’d pick Skye, of the two.

Charlotte2411 · 12/12/2024 13:51

Thank you for all your replies.

For those who don’t like either Skye or Violet, what name would you recommend!?

Violet Skye is a rather lovely image. Reminds me of the actress Azura Skye.

tiaa54742025 · 13/12/2024 01:49

Violet has a lovely sound to it, Skye is okay, but Violet seems more harmonious with Amelie and Ivy to my ear. I was going to suggest as a compromise, Skye as a middle name, but no....

AspirationalTallskinnylatte · 13/12/2024 01:58

Both are nice. I prefer Violet.
Another suggestion that goes with your others:
Robin

Violet. If I’m perfectly honest Skye is the sort of name you’d give a dog, and even then it’s not exactly great.

HollyChristmas · 13/12/2024 19:08

I think Emily goes well with your dd's name .

Viavita · 13/12/2024 19:16

Ivy, Amelie and Phoebe
Ivy, Amelie and Sylvie.

I'm not keen on Skye but quite like Skylar.
Violet is lovely.

Amelie and Emily?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/12/2024 19:59

Of the two, Skye - but beware it’s a character on popular Paw Patrol (and also does still have a bit of a hippy vibe too to be honest).

Violet is too samey with Ivy - both retro/“old lady” nature names, that make Amelie sound a bit of an odd one out. Skye is obviously nature too but at least a bit more modern.

Personally I’d go back to the drawing board and look at other top 100/200 names like Amelie and Ivy in style. Maybe Esme? I think that fits really well - has the French style of Amelie, yet the retro of Ivy. I also immediately thought of Sylvie as that has the same, but I’m not sure if it’s a bit close to Ivy in sound.

Maybe also consider Rosalie or Coralie? (obviously also nature names like Ivy but at least French style like Amelie).

Or perhaps Erin, Elodie, Eden? - I don’t know why but I think another shortish vowel name would be nice (and I’m not keen on Orla personally and can’t think of any other popular shorter O ones!)

Commonsense22 · 14/12/2024 05:04

Violet goes well with the other names and is lovely.

FloralMoon · 14/12/2024 06:24

I think that Violet is a beautiful name and goes really well with your other daughter’s names.

I met quite a few dogs called Skye where I used to live so I think of it more as a pet’s name although that doesn’t stop it being a nice name.

beccahamlet · 14/12/2024 06:26

Violet.100%

Oceangreyscale · 17/12/2024 23:48

Skye is my favourite but I like both.

BibbityBobbityToo · 17/12/2024 23:59

I don't mind Skye but wouldn't pick it for my kids.

I don't like Violet, to me it's for really old ladies or a gum chewing chav in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

What about Connie, Imogen, Carmen or Everly/Everleigh ?
