Kine-wen, I think?

marina · 30/04/2008 15:00

Kine-wen, I thought
Lovely name

Means "Little one" I think

PotPourri · 30/04/2008 15:20

So is that Keen - wen (like, I am keen to call my baby that). or Kyne-wen - like I kin(d) or want to use it....

Sorry to be a divvy, just that we want to get it right.

BTW. Baby name books etc say it means lovely, blessed, white.

I agree it's a lovely name - any variation of pronunciation I can think of included in that....

Kyne

MrsBadger · 30/04/2008 15:26

I thought KEN-w'n but am prepared to be wrong

remember if you can't pronounce it, no-one else will be able to either

Cerys?

Kewcumber · 30/04/2008 15:28

Marina is right as is your "kind" analogy

Wen is the female form of white, not sure about cein as it isn;t a word on its own.

Kewcumber · 30/04/2008 15:29

Celyn is nice too - means holly.

ChippyMinton · 30/04/2008 15:29

the lady i know is kyn-wen as in kind. lovely name.

Kewcumber · 30/04/2008 15:30

MrsB - your suggested pronounciation would I think actaully be spelt Cenwn!

Lionstar · 30/04/2008 15:32

I would pronounce it Kain-wen. Cain means something like 'fair' and wen is usually 'white'

Kewcumber · 30/04/2008 15:37

It this "white" in Welsh can also be used as blessed but I'm think that may be "old" welsh (just in case you're interested)

collision · 30/04/2008 15:42

But remember if you cannot or struggle to pronounce it then so will everyone else FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE!!!!

Blandmum · 30/04/2008 15:45

Plese don't use it if you don't know how to pronounce it. Chances are if you don't, neither will your friends and family

It isn't pronounced Keen win

beaniesteve · 30/04/2008 15:46

it's KANE - WEN.

not Kine- wen!

beaniesteve · 30/04/2008 15:48

Cane-wen! the 'wen' being pronounced like 'When' but without emphasising the 'wh' sound.

beaniesteve · 30/04/2008 15:50

With Welsh names you will often be told the wrong pronunciation by people who are Welsh but don't speak welsh and so don't pronounce Welsh names correctly! Also beware when naming children Welsh names as there are often Male and female versions which are slightly different and so you could end up giving a daughter a male version of a name.

llareggub · 30/04/2008 15:52

Hmm

I've always pronounced it "Kine-wen" but have always thought of it as being quite a harsh name. It is the kind of welsh name I've always thought you have to say in a really welsh accent.

But where I come from it is the sort of name you'd give to someone of Maureen and Ken's generation.

Kewcumber · 30/04/2008 15:53

where I grw up it was defintiely Kine wen Beanie! Are you north Walian?

Agree though if you live in england you and your child will spend the rest of your/their life correcting mis-pronounciations.

One neice (living in England) is called Cerys - easy enough you might think but is more commonly called "Cerise" (as in the colour).

beaniesteve · 30/04/2008 16:11

llareggub - how would you say 'Meinir'?

beaniesteve · 30/04/2008 16:13

I was raised in West Wales and learned Welsh there so to me those letters together would be Cane not Kine. And meinir would be MAY-Nir, but in S Wales it would probably be pronounced (Incorrectly) and MY-nir.

beaniesteve · 30/04/2008 16:14

Oh - and I live in Cardiff but was born in Walsall so I'm a bit of a hotchpotch!

where are you all from?

moondog · 30/04/2008 16:17

Oh, another Cymraes!
Sut mae BTS?

Caernarfon here.

Yes, North Walian and West Walian accents differe considerably. my Cardigan dh says some very odd things on occasion.

Kewcumber · 30/04/2008 16:20

"S Wales it would probably be pronounced (Incorrectly) and MY-nir" small correction... in S Wales it would probably be pronounced (correctly) as MY-nir

llanelli (now London - along with the other half of Wales!)

moondog · 30/04/2008 16:22

There's loads of Weshies dahn your way aren't there kew?
My mates in Richmond seem to live at that bloody rugby club.

moondog · 30/04/2008 16:23

Actually, Kew pronounces as 'cyw' which is Welsh for 'chick' which is used like 'love' or 'darling' so v. appropriate and clever moniker.
