lol, sorry, I do pronounce it wen rather than win though, am I forgiven?

moondog · 30/04/2008 18:35

Neeve
Sh'vaughan

CoteDAzur · 30/04/2008 18:48

kewcumber - what exactly is "the turkish revolution against the spanish"?

Just curious because in all the years of Turkish History I suffered, there was no mention of a "Turkish revolution against the spanish". I think.

And the only "Baden Evans" Google comes up with is a rugby guy.

beaniesteve · 30/04/2008 18:59

Moondog - exactly. With the Irish names we pronounce them as they are supposed to be pronounced.

CoteDAzur · 30/04/2008 19:04

Does anyone else think it wise to avoid giving names to our kids that we don't know how to pronounce?

beaniesteve · 30/04/2008 19:31

I think if you can't pronounce it or can't find out how to then it's inadvisable but you'll always have problems with other people not being able to so that shouldn't put you off.

Cote - wasn't there lots of fighting between the spnish, italians and Turks around the med in 1500's, I assumed it wsa to do with that. The reference to a leader from Llanelli made me laugh and I refuse to google it on the grounds that I'd rather beleive it to be true

Kewcumber · 30/04/2008 20:43

I wonder if they mean the Granada revolt - could Ottoman Muslim = turk? I would pmsl if that revolt was led by a llanelli-ite!!!!

PotPourri · 30/04/2008 20:45

Kew is that the same as the Cein in Ceiniog (penny) - sounds like next of...kin.

Dh is from Anglesey, so we would go with the north wales pronunciation if different, but he doesn't know anyone called Ceinwen - which is why I am checking.

BTW, DD1s middle name is Bronwen - and I have often regretted not keeping it for a first name! It's a gorgeous name - but I agree, definately has to be pronounced as 'wEn'

It's going to be a middle name, so I'm not worried about people not being able to pronounce. Will have more 'standard' name for first name.

First question was meant for Califrau (refering to where your mum is from)

llareggub · 30/04/2008 20:49

Wr're in England. DS's middle name is Iestyn and hardly anyone can pronounce it.

Umlellala · 30/04/2008 21:05

I would hazard Yest-in?

I would guess with Ceinwen that it was a sort of halfmixture between kane- and ken -wen.

I think you should know how to pronounce your child's name but it doesn't matter if you decide to pronounce it wrong (IMO) - it just makes it a peculiar (to some) version that's all.

PS a friend has called her baby Neve - so you could go for an anglicised spelling of names you like...
