Hello! We are wondering whether to name our new born baby boy Theodore. While it is a beautiful name imo, I am concerned that it is also very common, thus considering if we should go with something a little less popular instead ie. Marco or Matteo which are pretty popular in Italy, where I am from, but not in the UK. Thank you xx

Go with what you love. I think Theodore is gorgeous. Also, congratulations xx

Theodore is a lovely name! My son has a top 5 name and we only know one other, who is in a different year. Popular names aren’t as overused as they used to be :)

Comedycook · 06/12/2024 21:14

That's the problem with popular names...they are so nice, that's why they're popular!

Marco and Matteo are both great names too

salamithumbs · 06/12/2024 21:18

Theo/Theodore is quite common but that doesn't mean you can't use it! Having said that, I much prefer Matteo and would have loved to use it myself if my child had Italian heritage! (Sadly not)

F349 · 06/12/2024 21:25

@salamithumbs Aww you could still use it if you like it even without Italian heritage should you have other children 🧡

Theo's a nice name but I really like Matteo.

theduchessofspork · 07/12/2024 00:01

I'd go with Marco or Matteo - both lovely names

Theodore is nice but there are so many of them, people stop really appreciating the name and it's just anothertheo

Berlinlover · 07/12/2024 00:07

I love it.

Copperoliverbear · 07/12/2024 00:14

I love Theodore.

That's the problem with popular names...they are so nice, that's why they're popular!

The problem is that they become fashionable and overused, which inevitably means they fall out of fashion and sound dated again.

Another problem is that they don't do a good job of identifying a person as there are sooo many!

Sunnyflow · 07/12/2024 08:13

If you are Italian, I'd definitely use a beautiful and memorable Italian name!!

Definitely not another Theo...

BoleynMemories13 · 07/12/2024 09:43

Don't be put off. Theodore is falling in popularity in terms of the actual numbers registered each year, regardless of where it falls in the charts. It's happening to all the top 20 names, baring a few which are still on their rising curve, as people strive year on year to be different. Just go for what you love.

On the flipside, they're great for retaining privacy online in the 21st century world we live in. An unusual name can make someone incredibly easy to identify online, which isn't always a good thing. Obviously you can set your own privacy on social media and use fake names etc, but a Google search can bring up a lot of information on people with distinctive names.

DuchessOfSausage · 07/12/2024 17:52

I don't like Theodore one bit.

CookieMonster28 · 07/12/2024 18:08

I like Matteo!

F349 · 12/12/2024 14:54

Thank you so much all! I think it is going to be Matteo, with one of the following second names: Alexander, Edward or Henry. Which one sounds better in your opinion? xx

Matteo is lovely!

I like all of your middle name ideas, I think my favourite is Matteo Henry.

@Moreteaandchocolate Thank you! 🤩

You can’t go wrong with either name, OP. They’re both beautiful.

Matteo Alexander is beautiful.
