I have recently moved to UK and wanted to ask which ones of these names would work best here in terms of pronunciation and doesn't have any funny meanings in other cultures:

Essa
Moosa
Azlan
Mustafa
Zain
Nael

I am leaning towards Azlan and wanted to see if it could work alright here.

Yes, I like it!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 06/12/2024 10:25

Zain and Mustafa are both names you hear in the uk quite a bit so people know how to pronounce them.

Azlan will be very pronounceable , people will associate it with the lion the witch and the wardrobe though and misspell it Aslan. I think it’s a nice name though.

I haven’t really heard the other names and wouldn’t be fully sure on how to pronounce them. People will learn when you tell them though so depends on how much you care about that.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 06/12/2024 10:33

Zain is common and quite nice

I've taught most the others so not that unusual

Azlan sounds nice, it has strong Christian connotations for me as Aslan the lion is effectively God in the Narnia stories.

ItsADampColdNight · 06/12/2024 10:35

I was going to say Azlan before I saw that was your preference. I love it! Love the meaning too (I think it means lion?)

Ygfrhj · 06/12/2024 10:41

Azlan is a lovely name even with the Lion, Witch and Wardrobe connection.

Essa and Moosa might be mistaken for girls' names because of the -a ending.

Mustafa feels like an old man's name to me but maybe that's because there is an older man in my husband's family with that name.

I like Nael, not heard that before but has a nice sound (I'm assuming it rhymes with the river Nile and not the word nail which might be incorrect?)

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 06/12/2024 10:45

Azlan is a terrific name and pronounceable.
Essa sounds like a girl's name.
Moosa sounds like 'Moose' the animal, and would lead to teasing.
Mustafa is well known and pronounceable.
I'd be unsure about pronouncing the others.

Noodlesnotstrudels · 06/12/2024 10:51

I like Azlan, Mustafa and Zain. Do they have any special meanings, OP?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 06/12/2024 10:53

I like Zain the best.

Mustafa makes me think of the spoof character "Mustafa Shag" in Austin Powers.

StormingNorman · 06/12/2024 10:59

Essa - may get mistaken for a girl’s name
Moosa
Azlan - my favourite ❤️
Mustafa
Zain
Nael - I wouldn’t be sure how to pronounce this

chollysawcutt · 06/12/2024 11:02

Nael would likely get changed to Neal. I think that would get pretty boring having to spell it out all the time.

Essa is really lovely.

I like Zain the best.

Mustafa makes me think of the spoof character "Mustafa Shag" in Austin Powers.

This is a film series from the 1990s so not a reference that will have an impact on a baby being born now.

I really like all your options @sigh18 , I think Essa is my favourite and I knew it was a boys name. Nael is good as well but might be misspelt because people could mix it up with Neal/Neil.

Azlan will make most people think of the character Aslan in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe which is a classic British childrens book and has been adapted for film and TV several times, there's a new Greta Gerwig version in the works for Netflix soon as well. As a PP said the book is an allegory of Jesus Christ's death and rebirth and Aslan, the Lion, is the Christ character. Most people just enjoy the exciting story though but I don't know if that might affect your choice.

Stormyweatheroutthere · 06/12/2024 11:29

Zain from your list.

Whilst tomorrow's teenagers might not have watched Austin Powers, I think the comedy potential in adding various words to "Mustafa" is still quite considerable.

KirstenBlest · 06/12/2024 12:20

I'd guess the names are middle eastern, maybe Turkish.

Essa - same as Issa, meaning Jesus?
Moosa - Musa, equivalent of Moses? Banana.
Azlan - Aslan, mentioned by others.
Mustafa - 'must have a'
Zain - mainstream (Zayn became popular because of a pop star)
Nael - ok

OneToThree · 06/12/2024 12:26

I like Zain

KirstenBlest · 06/12/2024 12:31

@sigh18 , it depends where in the UK you are. Where I am it is multi-cultural, and the names would all be fine. The only issues might be with spelling. (the spellings are fine, but that might not be the most usual UK spelling)

TrippTover · 06/12/2024 12:32

Azlan, Mustafa and Zain all v cool.

Strokethefurrywall · 06/12/2024 12:34

Love love love Azlan! ❤️

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/12/2024 12:58

Zain sounds very cool and current - that would be my pick.

The only ones I wouldn’t recommend would be Essa and Moosa which sound quite feminine to me.

Just to add I know a little Azlan (that spelling) who must be 10 or 11 now. AFAIK there haven't been any issues with his name. I'm not far from London though so quite a multicultural area

We have an Arslan next door and he's a great guy.

theduchessofspork · 07/12/2024 00:12

Zain is quite popular, but I like Azlan (as long as you don't mind the Narnia connection) . I haven't heard Nael before but it's very usable.

I'd avoid the others.

Tinselz · 07/12/2024 22:14

Never heard Mustafa before but I’ve heard all of the others

Daisybuttercup12345 · 07/12/2024 22:20

I like Zain and Azlan.
