Thoughts on my boys list

These are names I'm considering for baby:
Magnus
Caspian
Maximilian
Frederick
Arthur
Clarence
August
Roland
Sylvan
Thorin
Gustav
Lucius
Amaury
Leon

My plan is to use one 'normal' name and one unusual name as first-middle combo, like Caspian Lewis or Arthur Lucius. I'm ok with common first name if middle is unusual and I prefer longer names over short ones (but plan to use longer name occasionally)

They all look fine, I don’t think they are unusual (except Amaury, never heard of it). I would have a think about which shortenings you prefer, that was the deciding factor for me when trying to pick.

Oh, and I wouldn’t worry too much about the middle name, it so rarely gets used, so pick something with a bit of meaning like a relative etc.

Sofa1000 · 02/12/2024 14:25

Yes. Most of those names will end up being truncated in some way.
Middle names are pretty irrelevant. I’ve known people for thirty years without knowing their middle name!
They’re all fine. What’s your favourite? Most are quite traditionally middle class except Leon and Caspian.

Mumofgirls2017 · 02/12/2024 15:32

Love most of the names on your list. I’d go

frederick Magnus
Arthur Caspian

or those switched round

Moreteaandchocolate · 02/12/2024 16:36

Maximilian, Frederick, Arthur and Leon are my favourites - all lovely.

Thorin, Lucius, August and Caspian are all ok too.

Not keen on the others as first names personally.

I’d choose

Maximilian Arthur
Arthur Caspian
Frederick Lucius
Leon August

crostini · 02/12/2024 16:59

I like Leon and caspian.

Im not keen at all on Clarence.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/12/2024 18:48

Magnus - yes.
Caspian - yes
Maximilian - yes but Max is very popular
Thorin - is it said as Torrin?
Gustav - yes
Frederick - yes but Freddie is vey popular
Arthur - ok but very popular
Roland - not sure
Leon - not keen. Prefer Leo
Sylvan - no
Lucius - No
Amaury - No
Clarence - No
August - No

bridgetreilly · 02/12/2024 19:39

I love Magnus. Maybe Magnus Frederick,

shoopshoopdedoo · 02/12/2024 19:59

I only like Frederick, though Freddie seems to be one of the most popular names I come across for baby boys.

I like Max and Leo for Maximilian and Leon. Roland is OK.

BootballJoy · 02/12/2024 21:00

Magnus - love it
Caspian - YES!
Maximilian - another great name
Frederick - fine
Arthur - great but popular
Clarence - not a fan
August - fine
Roland - ok
Sylvan - not sure if I like it or not
Thorin - ok
Gustav - ok
Lucius - not a fan
Amaury - not a fan
Leon - really not a fan

I'd go for Caspian Frederick or along those lines (i think Caspian Lewis sounds too much of a CS Lewis homage, unless that's your intention).

SunshineFlowersFood · 02/12/2024 21:28

I love Sylvan, first time hearing it.

Littletreefrog · 02/12/2024 21:30

I would use any of those apart from Clarence or Roland.

Merrow · 02/12/2024 21:30

DP vetoed Magnus, it was a firm favourite for me! Second favourite from your list is Caspian.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 03/12/2024 23:19

Leviticus. Levi for short.
Hugo
Benedict
Samuel
Atticus
Nigel
Nicholas.

Caspian Frederick
Roland Frederick
Leon Maximilian

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 04/12/2024 09:39

Omg, naw, jist naw!
I'm guessing your not Scottish though 😂
A kid would have a tough time in our schools if he was called Crispian or Clarence, sorry

Sunnyflow · 04/12/2024 12:40

They all look fine, I don’t think they are unusual

I agree - apart from Amaury, they're all popular and some are overused (Max, Freddie, Arthur....)

My favourites are Leon, Magnus and Caspian. All great classics that aren't overused but well known.

mrspresents · 04/12/2024 20:16

Maximilian is my fav from your list

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/12/2024 21:47

Sensible idea to go for one “normal” name and one more unusual one imo. I actually think most of the names on your list are fairly useable though (dependant on where you live) as some have nn’s that mean they aren’t “out there” - for example I don’t meet many Maximilian’s but Max is pretty commonplace, Magnus or Gustav are rarer but again Max or Gus pretty normal, Lucius (or Lucian?) could get Luke etc. Love Caspian too, although I suppose nn Cas is still fairly rare. I like Sylvan as well but not sure if it sounds slightly feminine as it’s so rare compared to the female version? 🤔 Thorin also quite Scandi cool sounding (is it also LOTR?).

The only ones I really dislike on your list are Clarence (geeky), Amaury (odd), Roland (medieval cosplaying) and Leon (downmarket to me) - but that’s personal taste.

For me I’d go probably go Classical with Maximilian August or Cassius (as long as the initial’s don’t spell something with your surname), with the elegant nn Maxim or trendy Max. Second choice something like Caspian Lewis as per your suggestion (although that would be very literary with C.S Lewis and Prince Caspian 🤣) or Caspian Arthur/Frederick.
