Hi all!

Thinking Benjamin for our second son. Benji is an obvious nn but also thinking Benny…would you spell this ‘Benny’ or ‘Bennie’. Does Benji sound like a pet name? Just can’t decide!!

We love long names that can be shortened.

Any advice appreciated! X

I love Benjamin - Ben is my favourite nn, but Benny (spelt this way) is also nice - especially for a baby / child. Benji does feel a bit “pets name” to me - but I’m sure my associations would change if I met a little Benji!

I would spell the nickname Benny. I also like Ben as nicknames as well.

My niece married a Benjamin, usually known as Ben, and at their wedding his male friends all called him Benny, which was really nice and friendly!

Lostatsea10 · 28/11/2024 13:05

I have a 3 year old Benjamin. He called himself Benjy when learning to talk/his name. It’s stuck a bit and we largely call him Benjy or Benjamin. My eldest calls him Benjaminny which is a mouthful but has also stuck.

It’s a lovely name. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I've known a lot of Bens, one Benji and one Jam. I don't think I've ever met a Benny but there's nothing wrong with it - I'd spell it Benny for a boy, I've heard of a female Bennie (short for Brenda, I think).

HPD76 · 01/12/2024 10:13

I know a Benjamin and he is variously called Ben, Ben-Ben, Benj, Benji and Boo. He answers to all of them, but I think likes Ben or Benj the best.

Benji is cute when young, Ben is nice when older. I really like the name Ben

Ben is a handsome nick name for Benjamin.

Benji and Benny are fun for youngsters.
I always think of that funny tune and Benny Hill when I hear Benny.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 01/12/2024 18:17

I meant to say earlier that I don't think I've ever seen a pet called Benji, although I've known a few dogs called just Ben (which doesn't rule it out as a human name as far as I'm concerned). Also, I seem to remember Benjamin Zephaniah was Benji to his nearest and dearest.

My Benjamin will be 9 next week and he is almost always Ben but he has a few cutesy nicknames when he was smaller, Benjabub was the main one which quickly became just bub and bubby.

It’s a great name.

Love this name!
Ben
Bunny
Benji
Benj

Stirrednshaken · 01/12/2024 21:50

Benny, Ben or Benj

Fenellalangley · 05/01/2025 01:59

Hi there!
Benjamin is such a classic and versatile choice—love it! Personally, I think Benny works great and feels more natural than Bennie for a little boy, but both are cute options. As for Benji, it’s definitely sweet, but I don’t think it sounds like a pet name—it’s playful yet still works as a nickname for Benjamin.
Ultimately, go with what feels right for your family—Benjamin gives you so many lovely options to use! X 😊

Giggorata · 05/01/2025 02:34

DS2 has just reminded me that one of his friends called Benjamin was called Ben, Benjy, Bendy, Benny, Benito, Benzo, Benno, Bender, Bendle, Benana and probably loads more when they were teens.

Kittylickingplate · 05/01/2025 02:38

My Ben is known as 'Jamin'
It's cute and suits him. (He is 21)

ShesNotACowShesAFox · 05/01/2025 02:39

I have a friend with a son called Benjamin Joseph and she calls him Benjo as a NN which I think is very cute

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 05/01/2025 02:48

I love the name Benjamin. Benji is cute for a nickname. It does sound a bit like a pet name but if it’s just a nickname I don’t think that matters. He can always stop using that particular nickname if he doesn’t like it when he’s older. I would spell Benny with a y not an ie.

Noonecaresifyounamechange · 08/03/2025 18:12

I don’t think a nn needs to be decided on right now does it?
Benjamin is a lovely name on its own. I personally love love love Benny, but am a fan of all the nn options for the name.

sparkx · 08/04/2025 10:36

Hey there!
Benjamin is a fantastic name, and both "Benji" and "Benny" are adorable nicknames!
For spelling, both "Benny" and "Bennie" are common, but "Benny" tends to be the more popular choice, giving it a more casual, approachable feel. "Bennie" is a bit rarer and can give a unique twist, but it might be mistaken for a variation of "Benny" sometimes. Ultimately, it depends on which spelling resonates with you more!
As for "Benji" sounding like a pet name, it's a sweet, endearing nickname, but it doesn't have to be reserved for pets—plenty of people use it as a fun, affectionate form of Benjamin.
Since you love long names that can be shortened, Benjamin offers a lot of flexibility. If you love the idea of Benji or Benny, you can't go wrong with either. Trust your instincts! 😊

I would just use Ben, which is great.

Personally not fond of Benji or Benny and the Ben in our family fiercely resists!

BatsInSpring · 08/04/2025 16:06

Benj is cool!

Teamsmoniker · 06/09/2025 10:50
